Okay, I just HAD to make a topic of what your favorite pieces were from each of the following composers:

1. Chopin
2. Liszt
3. Beethoven
4. Schubert
5. Schumann
6. Mozart
7. Prokofiev
8. Rachmaninov
9. Albeniz
10. Moszkowski

29. Scarlatti
30. Handel
31. Balakirev
32. Massanet
33. Stravinsky
34. Kabalevsky
35. Lyapunov

There are more composers, I know, so if you can, please tell me and I'll add them on here.

Okay, so the objective is to list your top 3-5 pieces by these composers.

Also, list as many pieces as you can of each of these composers of the top of your head. The person who names the most wins! (Maybe even a prize... biggrin unless it's against the rules that I have failed to read)

Also, please do it like this so it looks organized:

Example:

Chopin
1. ______________________
2. ______________________
3. ______________________
4. ______________________

etc.

Ready, set, GO!

Probably will edit list eventually of course, since it may get pretty huge. Pieces in no particular order. Don't think there should be a prize for this, since some dishonest member may simply COPYPASTA these composers' works just for the prize and all. It's your choice however, of course.

Chopin
1. Ballade no.4 op.52
2. Polonaise-Fantasie op.61
3. Barcarolle op.60
4. Nocturne op.27 no.1
5. Nocturne op.48 no. 1
6. Prelude op.28 no.2(don't know why, but that prelude really got me when I first heard it)
7. Sonata no.2 op. 35
8. Sonata no.3 op. 58
9. Etudes op.10(whole thing, yes)
10. Etudes op.25

Liszt(sorry, I can only recall most of the opus numbers of Chopin and Scriabin pieces. For the rest, it's bits and pieces here and there.)
1. Mephisto Waltz no.1(damn it, still on the search for the other three)
2. Funerailles(sorry, couldn't do the right accents)
3. Sonata in b minor
4. Totentanz(another "don't know why" listing, but it's rather catchy from my own experiences)
5. Valse-Impromptu
6. Transcendental Etudes, all except 1, 2, and 4. I like 10 to 12 the absolute most however.
7. Ballade no.2

Scriabin
1. Etude op.42 no.5(never get tired of that one, even after listening to various recordings of it possibly hundreds of times, it's simply divine) and no.6
2. Sonata no.5 op. 53
3. Sonata no.9 op.68
4. Sonata no.4 op.30
5. Sonata no.2 op.19
6. Prometheus: The Poem of Fire op.60
7. Poem of Ecstasy/Le poeme de l'extase/Symphony no.4 op.54
8. Etudes op.8
9. Fantasie op.28
10. Vers la flamme op.72
11. Sonata no.10 op. 70

Beethoven
1. Sonata no.29(Hammerklavier)
2. Symphony no.9(not just the last movement by the way)
3. Sonata no.32
4. Sonata no.8(Pathetique), 1st movement only
5. Sonata no.21

Rachmaninoff
1. Piano Concerto no.3
2. Piano Concerto no.4
3. Piano concerto no.2
4. Prelude in G minor, op.23 no.5
5. Etude Tableau op.39 no.5

Tchaikovsky
1. Symphony no.6(Pathetique)
2. Manfred Symphony
3. Piano Concerto no.1

Alkan
1. Concerto for Solo Piano(really etudes op.39 no.8-10)
2. Etude op.35 no.5
3. Etude op. 39 no.1(Comme le vent)
4. Grand sonate(Les quatre ages)
5. Grand etude "Hands Reunited"(I see why they say Chopin's 2nd sonata's final movement was inspired by Alkan after hearing it)
6. Symphony for Solo Piano(really etudes op.39 no.4-7)

May add more later, when I'm in a more orchestral mood. ninja

Chopin
1. Ballades, yes, all four of them. XD
2. Barcarolle
3. Nocturne in C-sharp minor, Op. 27/1
4. Nocturne in D-flat major, Op. 27/2
5. Nocturne in C minor, Op. 48/1
6. Etudes, Op. 10 (going with Fryderyk here...all of it!)
7. Sonata No. 3 in B minor
8. Scherzo No. 3 in C-sharp minor
9. Polonaise-Fantasie
10. Polonaise in F-sharp minor, Op. 44

It's too hard to keep a short list for Chopin. I haven't even mentioned the Preludes, Waltzes, etc. yet, and I've grouped two sets under single numbers. @_@;

Rachmaninov
1. Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor (my favourite Rachmaninov, hands down...I have special feelings for this one)
2. Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor
3. Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini
4. Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor
5. Etudes-tableaux, Op. 33 (again, all...)

Will add more later~

You like Scriabin? I think he's great. It's unfortunate that he's not AS famous as Rachmaninov, but..

Fryderyk Chopin

List too long, chopped in quote.

Oh yes, I love his stuff. It is unfortunate indeed, considering that Scriabin is arguably the more innovative between the two, and I agree with that notion although I do not wish to cause an argument on that subject here. Plus, it doesn't hurt that Scriabin adored Chopin's works like quite a few of us here do, and one can see that clearly in many of his early works and a few of his somewhat later-but-not-quite-late works, like ones in between op.40-50.

Alkan is even more grossly neglected however, not ALL of his works were horrifically difficult, but he has obtained a reputation for composing such music. His pieces are wonderful and as I mentioned before, one can hear some obvious influences of his music on Chopin(one example being the final movement of Chopin's second sonata) and vice versa, considering they were friends and neighbours(next door neighbours, I believe, although I should really check again.). 3nodding
