I honestly, with my whole being do not understand phobias. I don't have one, and I don't comprehend how someone can be deathly afraid of anything. Like needles.. I want a tattoo, and my close friend wants to get one with me at the same time, but he is incredibly afraid of needles, even talking about donating blood makes his face go white... I don't understand it what-so-ever, so it makes me angry...

I dunno... I'm like "afraid" of spiders and heights and needles because they can cause you pain, and are dangerous.. so like.. spiders I step on, needles I only let ones from Dr.s touch me, and it doesn't last long, and for heights, I step away from the edge.. There's no fainting, or short of breath...

I fundamentally don't understand phobias... and it makes me angry when I can't explain to people with such phobias that it's not that bad, or try to put reason into their brain, they just give over to the fear...

just thought I would get that out

::[ I can explain my car phobia in one word and you will understand.

Hannah.

But only, cars don't make me go white or faint or whatever. Just, for awhile, I was afraid to drive. But that was Mr. Gee and drivers ed's fault. I call it a phobia because I don't know what to call it. Its just one of those things that makes me nervous.

Irrational fears, however... Is there a difference between phobias and irrational fears? Because I definitely have a few irrational fears, and I know they're irrational, but they're still hard to get rid of.

Spiders and needles are kinda whimpy phobias. But other fears, like the fear of going outside, thats something wrong with their head. So I dunno. Fears are a funny thing.

If any of this made sense, then... Yeah. That'd be odd. I'm on the phone/typing at the same time, so my mind is in two places. ]::

but that Hannah thing... I get that lol... I'm afraid to drive around her or with her... but your brother isn't much better : |

heart ~ It's a psychological thing. Either from experiences or from being brought up to fear something. Something like as a child, a mother would be terrified of rats and would freak out if she saw one, the child in turn mimics this behavior and fears the rat as well. Fear of danger is built into our survival instincts. Most people would not enjoy dangerous things. But to an extent a phobia, it really isn't their fault. Showing anger up front may actually bring the person to feel worse about their phobia. You can see this especially with social phobias. Talking in front of an audience. The person may feel the queasy sensations and other things resulting from nervousness, and so try to stay away and maybe develop a phobia from it.
Ok, I think I'm done with my rant. Just remember it's not their fault. If they want help, they can contact a psychologist to help them overcome it through a variety of ways. ~ heart

I understand being afraid of something because your mom is.. that was me with snakes... but I got over it so simply... I played with some baby sand boas... they were adorable.. I don't outwardly show anger... it's just.. I feel so irritable on the inside...

The social fears I understand, that can be scary... but it's stupid when they faint speaking in front of a class, but they want to be actors... and there's only to an extent that a fear makes sense, because it could keep you alive, but once you pass that line, it would impede your life...

Take snakes for example... fearing snakes makes sense because they can cause pain or death... so avoid snakes, don't touch them.. makes sense... but fearing snakes to the point of passing out when you see one... you pass out, the snake comes over and has free reign over your body... or fearing snakes to the point that you don't go outside... it's just flat stupid

heart ~ Well, if it comes to fainting, they do need to seek a professional. Most people don't faint, they tend to do anything to stay away from the situation altogether. A phobia is similar to an addiction, in the sense that it becomes a phobia when it interferes with life. Such as the snake, a person can fear it. But when the person stays away from situations that a snake can appear, that is a phobia. EX: A friend has a snake (even locked in glass case) = person never visits.
You may not know how they feel and probably never will. But try not to let it get to you. I would say that 80+% of Americans have a phobia, be it mild or severe. ~ heart
