I like the idea of making the boat color and the water black and white, but the boat looks choppy you need to color it so it looks smoother and the back ground needs lightened with more contrast. I also think the idea would portray a little better if the boat was bigger as it is the mountain steals attention from the boat.

Cropping is your best friend with this piece. It would have been nicer if the lake weren't so vast around it. Making the boat stand out like that made me feel empty afterwards instead of "ooooh" as you might have wanted. heart

Cropping definatly would have been better. Maybe a thin photo without so much lake.

I agree with everyone who mentioned cropping. Adding color to the boat would make it stand out...and maybe some tint in the sky, but not the water, to give it boosted contrast.

Actually, before cropping, I'd say if possible take a picture like that zoomed in as close as possible so that the main focus of the photo is the object and not the things around it. After it's scanned or uploaded, I'd worry about the cropping if necessary to bring the object to the front. Secondly, I'd suggest adjusting brightness and contrast to your liking depending on the effect you're going for when you start editing the picture, and before color, layers are good. The easiest way to get color where you want it and how you want it, make your picture the background layer, then create a new layer on top of it. Change the new layer's properties from normal to overlay, and color on that layer, so you're not losing any detail of the boat itself. You can always adjust the opacity and fill of the layer to get the exact look you want. Overall it makes the coloring a lot smoother and it looks more natural, then when you've got the result you want, merge the visible layers and save it.
