I am a gnome. First thing I want you to do is forget all those little cheerful-looking plaster lawn ornaments. Long ago we were about that size, but our appearances ranged any ethnicity native to Europe. Now listen closely. A long time ago, gnomes were tiny woodland sprites. We were nimble and swift and clever and magical. We did favors for humans we liked, and sometimes they did the same for us. We were very rural, and lived off the land. That all changed in the Industrial Revolution. Most faeries were wiped out, but gnomes adapted. In fact, we prospered. We didn''t require magic to live. We only used it in minor illusions that we used to help remain hidden. During the Industrial Revolution, magic became very unreliable. We realized that with the magic gone, and the forests and caverns being torn into for resources, we''d have to change. The first step was altering our size. Because most early knowledge was passed down orally, and every re-telling changed a little, every family of gnomes has a different opinion about how we changed out shape. Somehow we did though, and then we blended into human society. We rather liked it. Not only had technology driven off most of the faeries (most of whom were very unpleasant), it made our lives much easier. It was so useful, and also so very thought-provoking. Engineering is very intruiging to us. Some gnomes prefer actual science, but those few are frowned upon in our society. Anyway, we've had a great deal of influence on the progress of engineering technologies. Clocks, trains, cars, planes, we've had a hand in the creation of them all. These days we fit so seamlessly into human society that some gnomes die never knowing their heritage. All in all, life is good.
Any questions?

White Wolf? I have no idea what you're talking about. And let me tell you, the fact that most faeries are gone is a good thing. They treated most humans in the same way that a child treats tiny animals. At best you'd be prodded and mishandled. At worst, you'd never see your home again. They'd even abduct humans under our protection! It doesn't even occur to them to think about what others need or want, and, well...
Look, they're just ******** creepy okay? They have this way of looking at you that tells you that they would not hesitate to do any number of terrible things to you just to slake their thirst for amusement.

Wow that's interesting....I know you said you didn't know exactly how you changed since there are so many versions, but what do you think in your personal opinion?

I personally think that the most knowledgeable of my race sought out one of the rime giants, and between them concocted an elixir that, over a few generations and in the correct proportions, might make us closer to humans in size. At least, that's what me and my fellows tell other gnomes. We honestly don't know, but we've been claiming to know as far back as any of us remember, and buggered if we're just going to up and say "We don't know."
You know?

No offense, but you can't be serious!

You're trying to tell me those short things from Snow White are real, not to mention you are one?

Ok no offense, but no magick on Earth can make a species change that much with in a few hundred years or so.

How do you know you are a gnome I mean if they look so similar to humans what physical differences do you have?

The list of questions could go on but I just don't think gnomes are real or ever were real.

I assure you, I am dead serious.

Those were fictitious and innaccurate representations of dwarves. I am not a dwarf, I am a gnome.

Ok no offense, but no magick on Earth can make a species change that much with in a few hundred years or so.

How much do you know of magic? Which kind are you thinking of? Gnomes knew of many materials with mystical properties, and rime giants possess magic capable of fooling the gods. In the modern day there is human growth hormone, and that doesn't require magic at all. Why then is my hypothosis too difficult to believe? And bear in mind, not all gnomes believe that is how we came to alter our size.

Physically, we are now practically identical, but those of more than human descent know our own. I don't know why, we just do.

I don't mind. If everybody began to believe in gnomes, we'd be in quite a lot of trouble!

Dwarfs and Gnomes are synonyms, they can be interswitched, so they are the same species.

Yes, but you're talking about hundreds of years ago during the industial revolution, I doubt any species had shots magickal or not to make people grow.

Well I mean there's no proof physically, I mean a people with DID thinks they have many souls within them but that's just a mental disorder. (Not calling you crazy or anything just trying to figure out how someone can think they are a mythical creature.)

Not quite. Dwarves are entirely subterranean, whereas gnomes are perfectly at home above the ground.

Don't under-estimate the powers of rime giants. I don't think you fully understand the extent of their powers. Legend tells that they once gave a corporeal body to the very essence of fire. I don't think simply changing our size would be past their capability. And again I stress the point, this is just the opinion of myself and close associates. Many gnomes have entirely different theories, some more mundane, and others even more fantastic.

Of course there is no proof. If there was, we'd have been found out long ago. Even some gnomes don't know gnomes exist. I'm not trying to make you believe I'm a gnome, I'm just trying to put some misconceptions to rest.

not to offend anyone or anything but i though gnomes were generally categorized in the same grouping as other fae creatures... maybe it was explainned to me incorrectly...

question though if one is anything other than a human walking everyday in the human world and a human is to ignorant or innexperienced to recognized it why would it discredit that that creature was indeed not human???

sort of the whole tree falling in a forest theory... the real question is are you ignorant to think because you didn't hear it it didn't happen....

I didn't quite get the gist of that. But there's no such thing as "regular fey". It all depends on how much you depend on magic. Some things, such as fairies and pixies, are almost entirely magical. Others, such as gnomes and elves, are practically mundane. Technology is powered by magic, despite what scientists believe. Think of it as fire, with magic as gas. Initially it flares, consuming almost all gas, then feeds on the small trickle still there. When excess magic is burned away, the natural background magic stays at a consistant low. So creatures of magic sort of die of malnourishment, while others that only tap it just lose their powers.

I gotta say, you certainly seem like you know what you're talking about. I'm just wondering one thing. Where did you learn all of this? is it information that you intuited/dreamt or do you have some kind of physical source?

I find all of this absolutely fascinating (very very new to the concept of studying magical creatures with a serious intent).

A great deal of what I know I learned from other gnomes. A good deal of that I was able to verify for myself.

Terrenus,

I am glad that someone else agrees with me on the fact that technology is at least pertially powered by magic.

And many blessings to you and your kind. smile
