Who do you guys think was the greatest ever? Rampal? Galway? Pahud? Anyway, I'm just curious and I thought it would be an interesting topic.

I love Rampal. He is my favorite. I've seen a lot of people lean towards Galway, but I just think that Rampal is more musical.

Emmanuel Pahud for the win.
His stylistics are so virtuoso-like, he has captured these notes on sheets of paper and turned them into the most beautiful and most tasteful expressions I have ever heard.
His music label, EMI, is very strict about downloading single mp3s of his, whether it be stealing them or buying them. You have to buy the full albums, which I believe are worth every penny of probably only $20 an album.
Rampal is the "god".
But Emmanuel exceeds in the expression, and tone altogether.

I'm at a lost why no one has mentioned Baker, of which most of the great flutists out there not only studied with but emulate through their playing.
Galways sound is too dead, but his technique is genius. Rampal and Pahud are the greatest of our time I think, but not all time.

I haven't listened to a lot of Baker, but the one recording I have of him, is kind of....crappy for lack of a better word. o_O; I'm thinking he was probably better when he was younger, because I know the recording I have is when he was older. In addition to that, my teacher studied under him at Julliard, and judging by her, he can't have been bad. xD
I do love Pahud and Rampal, more so Pahud.
And ya'll, yes, ya'll should check out Vanilla Mood, epic they are.

Agreed concerning Baker. My teacher had studied with Baker for some time, and she adores him. Although she also loves Rampal and her tone is similar to his.
In my opinion...there is no such thing as the greatest flute player of all time razz Ha!

Gary Shocker. I know that he's not as well known as other musicians, but he's still fantastic. He's a composer, flautist, and pianist all in one. And he's an amazing player, of both instruments.
