Oh My Gosh, yes it's a MALE author. eek And if you haven't read him you're missing out on some of the most outrageously entertaining reads. He has two series. The Dresden Files (Which I've read) and Codex Alera (Which I've not). Book 10 of the dresden files comes out on April first!
I don't know much about codex Alera other than it apparently started as something of a challenge to write a serious story that combined the missing roman legion and Pokemon (I'm serious here. not a joke.) A lot of reviews I've read say it's actually better than the dresden files (which is phenomenally impressive considering the bar dresden files hits.)
Dresden files is about a wizard private investigator, Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden, living in modern day Chicago. the series explores Harry's utterly insane life as he deals with trying to make rent, running from/sucking up to/helping out the cops (depending on the day and problem), crazy clients, vampires, fairies, the other wizards who think he deserves to die, and making rent.
If that doesn't sound utterly awesome enough all on its own I have six words for you: "Zombie Tyrannosaurus Rex Rampaging Through Chicago". And he sells it.
