I'm fairly certain that all of the IRC frequenters already know about the website.

It's a very simple word game. It's a vocabulary review, basically.
One right answer is 20 grains of rice for someone without food.

FreeRice has two goals:
1. Provide English vocabulary to everyone for free.
2. Help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free.

World hunger isn't a joke, even though I want to make one about the lunch I'm currently eating.

What are some fun/ strange words you've encountered?
What's your highest vocab level?
How much rice do you donate at a time?
There are many other sites like this. If you know of any, you should share them.

Yeah, I made another new thread.

thimblerig = shell game
doyenne = senior woman
emollient = lotion
gynandromorph = hermaphrodite
omphaloskepsis = navel-contemplation
eviscerate = disembowel
milquetoast = timid person

Possibly somewhere in the mid 40's. I think I normally end up somewhere between 35 - 40.

Normally a few thousand. One time I kept the window up and did a few words at a time in between things. I believe I got over 10,000 grains. This time I stopped at 4040 grains of rice.

I've done this a fair number of times but I never do it for very long. I'm not sure what the furthest level I've gotten to is... I'm doing it again now.

I should maybe bookmark this, I've been meaning to for a good while.

I can't seem to get above level 30.
Then, I'm listening to music...so that could be messing with mah concentration.

You cheat? xD
I do it to actually sort of learn some words.
Sometimes.
Although, cheating would be for the greater good... of feeding people.

I don't usually cheat, but I did once to see how high up I could get. I was Googling things. But it got boring and I stopped playing, but that happens whether I'm cheating or not.

And yes, that was what I thought about the whole cheating thing...

Suuure. xD
I just keep the window open.
So, while I wait for things to load or something, I do a word or two... or ten.

That game sounds really fun. I think I'll try it. But, those words seem so big. Do you guys really know them all, or do you cheat, like Quixotic said?

Edit: I think I'm going to add "cervine" to my "Fun Words" list. (Note: This list is mental.)

I honestly don't usually cheat. That's the only time I've done it.

I am shocked though how many words I get right when playing normally. There are a lot I don't know but I can figure out a good number of them. I think my usual level is in the mid to upper thirties though. I have no idea if that's good or not, I'd think it's average, maybe slightly above? I really don't know.
PostPosted: Fri Mar 28, 2008 8:19 pm
I think my highest level was 40. Though, I usually score in the low to middle thirties.

I've officially donated 2200 grains already. I'm keeping a running total.
I wonder exactly how much 2200 grains equals to. Maybe a small bowl?

Actually, last time I did this before rediscovering it here they only gave 10 grains per word you got right. They must be doing well and making more ad revenues. Nice.

When I played earlier it was indeed around mid 30s to low 40s. As in like... I kinda hung around level 37 heh. My highest was 40 this time.
PostPosted: Sat Sep 13, 2008 9:51 pm
Highest level is 42, I believe. But normally not for long.

You have now donated
14180 grains of rice.

(Two cups of rice. 1 cup = About 7000 grains)

...When one puts the mesurement in cups, our donations do seem pretty insignificant. sweatdrop
