The other day I found a website that offered ROMS of Phantasy Star IV, Shining Force II, Genesis Sonic games, and others at various points in their development stage. ( PSIV, and SFII are various stages of localization, not development, but from the sounds of it, the non-RPGs are from various stages of development.)

I can't provide links for obvious reasons, but it's worth a search if this sort of thing interests you. In the earliest version of Phantasy Star IV, they seem to be using variations of the Japanese character names, and the dialog is generally the same, but worded differently. In some cases the dialog is shorter, in other cases it's expanded.

That's kinda interesting. Though one should be a little wary in just beliving that what they found was really stuff from when it was in development, since sometimes it's just an a** claiming that what they tweaked is the real deal.

If you use a hacked save state, you can add in various values for things. If you mess with the item values and add ones that go beyond the scope of what is available as an actual item (in game or disabled) you get weird messages.

I'm fairly sure that many of the messages I got that I thought were unused weren't. When I tried sell the item to the shop the NPCs said something else. Here are some examples:

The letter/number combo at the top is the hex value that adds the "item" to the inventory.
~~~
C3=Rimpa
Description: REQUIEM FOR LUTZ
Use: Casts Deban on char. (Doesn't seem to actually work. No defense up message.)
Equip:
Sell: Any other needs message (unused shop message??) 2690 meseta
Discard: Can't discard!
Causes crash: No
~~~

C4=Rever
Description: DEZORIS DE DON
Use: Casts unknown assist tech on all characters. (Doesn't seem to work)
Equip:
Sell: Can't carry anything message (Unused shop message? Different from the one you get if your inventory is full.) Meseta boost?
Discard: Can't discard!
Causes crash: No
~~~
C6=Arows
Description: THE KING OF TERRORS
Use: Can select one char. to cast it on. (But you cannot cast anything)
Equip:
Sell: Would you buy anything else messege (Unused shop message?) 39 meseta
Discard: Can't discard!
Causes crash: No
~~~

D1=Disrupt
Description: (Blank window)
Use: None (Freezes screen when selected)
Equip:
Sell: Tool message (Unused message of some sort. I'll have to recheck this because I can't remember if it said "Tool" or was part of a larger message.) 524 meseta
Discard: Can't discard!
Causes crash: Yes (Freezes screen when selected)
~~~
D5=Legeon
Description: (Glitchy jibberish. Sticks to screen)
Use: Can select one char. to use it on. But nothing will happen when it's used.
Equip:
Sell: Buy something else message (Unused message?) 135 meseta
Discard: Yes
Causes crash: No
~~~

D6=Burstroc
Description: (Glitchy jibberish)
Use: None
Equip:
Sell: That won't do message (Unused message?) Meseta boost?
Discard: Yes
Causes crash: No
~~~
Now I remember the old missing no. trick with Pokemon Red/Blue. The trick screws up the way the game reads data. Since missing no. isn't a real pokemon and is just a placeholder name for missing data, the game tries to pull something out of it's arse to compensate. That's why missing no. is a bunch of weird tiles stuck tofgether and has attacks that don't make sense with it's type. It just takes those things in place of data that does not exist in the first place.
A little off topic I guess but I was happy to post here again. ^^;;
Anywaiz... Missing no. reminded me of the weird stuff I got when messing with the hex values. Obviously the game can't find the data for these "items" and takes something else in it's place. It's like:
Game: "OMG! THE KING OF TERRORS? That's not an item! Why is it in the inventory? It doesn't do anything! You can't equip it or throw it away... I know! I'll just toss in some weird effect with an unused message and go call my therapist..." x.x
Even regular carts could be weird at times. I remember once I jostled my Street Fight 2 (Genesis version) cart y accident and a weird screen came up when I turned the power back on. It was an alternate version of the background to E. Honda's stage. There was alot of debug text that I could cycle through by pressing buttons. It wasn't anything I could even get with a code or a Game Shark. Wonder why it came up.
I guess something like that happened twice before on my Shining Force II cart. I messed up the cheat you input during the Sega logo. Instead of the happy fanfare, it was this strange evil fanfare. Things looked different then it froze up. I remember reading afterwards about there being a 2nd different cheat code, a debug code I think (it's been quite a few years sweatdrop ) that causes the evil noise, but it's one that needs to be input using a controller which allows you to pre-program button presses, and then set it (the controller) on turbo speed to get it all in before the logo disappears. I was using a normal stick, and I'm certain that's not what I pressed when it happened. I eventually did buy one of those programmable sticks (used), I couldn't get the code I found online to work at all. *shrugs*
This morning I was doing a PVP Battleground on World of Warcraft, and one of my teammates (from a different server) was named Trimate. rofl
