mine is: someone who doesn't have a life, anti-social, nerd and someone who's very obsessed on something. Not someone who likes and watch a lot of anime.

(o-tah-ku) In Japan, otaku is a fairly derogatory term used to describe an obsessed fan of something (not necessarily anime). In North America, however, the term is often a badge of honor for hard-core anime fans. Sometimes also used to refer to anime fans in general.?

It’s pretty much the same as calling yourself a nerd or geek isn’t it? That was always my understanding.
Anyway people who call themselves it is the same as people who call themselves a nerd.
Like me…I am a nerd lol….nerd girl.
I’m rambling…

Otaku, to me anyway, is a derogatory term to describe anyone obsessed with Japanese pop-culture: Video Games, Anime, Movies, Music, Etc. Not that it's a noteworthy source, but a general understanding of the word seems to be thus: Quote: Otaku is the honorific word of Taku (home). Otaku is extremely negative in meaning as it is used to refer to someone who stays at home all the time and doesn't have a life (no social life, no love life, etc) Usually an otaku person has nothing better to do with their life so they pass the time by watching anime, playing videogames, surfing the internet (otaku is also used to refer to a nerd/hacker/programmer). In the Western culture, people confuse otaku to be something positive like "Guru". If you think about it, it's not really good to be called a guru if it means you are a total loser who can't socialize with other people except through the Internet. Other Japanese words which have been confused by Westerners also include but not limited to: Anime, Manga, etc otaku no jinsei ha yabai na! (it sucks to live the life of an otaku!) Courtesy of Urban Dictionary.
