Meleager nodded his thanks to the young stallion he'd been sparring with, and walked down to one of the many streams that flowed through this area. He'd needed that. Even if there was no chance of any serious action, training was necessary - not just to keep fit and ready, but probably for his own sanity. The dapple-grey stallion was not naturally inactive. But right now, he was satisfyingly tired from the mock battle, and ready for a rest. The Reya stretched briefly and lowered his head to take a drink from the stream. The cool water was refreshing in the warm afternoon. That youngster had seemed promising, the he mused as he drank, although he wasn’t sure where the horned crossbreed would fit best. Still, it was enough that he would make an excellent soldier at some point in the future – Meleager made a mental note to mention him to somebody who could keep an eye on his progress. Thirst quenched, the stallion turned to walk back up the small hill. He would watch the training for a while, he decided, and perhaps join in again.

 The hill was already occupied.
The pale crossbred flicked his tails thoughtfully as he looked down upon the mares and stallions who tried their strength and skill against one another. They down there were just a few of the warriors who looked to the tacticians for strategy and, as of two days ago, he was the chief of those tacticians.
It was, Castor admitted to himself as he watched a Jala and an Aeri step up to spar, a daunting concept. Such responsibility to rest upon his thin shoulders, so many lives for him to watch over. Oh he could do it, or so he believed, but pretending that he was not afraid, especially to himself, was a foolish idea. At least if he accepted his worries he could begin to prove them groundless and move past them. If he denied them, they would remain at best and might even worsen and that would do the herd no good at all.
Smiling slightly at an especially good feint on the part of the Jala his blue eyes had picked out a few moments ago, Castor stretched his tendril wings before settling them back against his sides. New at being the Master Tactician he might be, but he sure as hells knew how to deploy a good Lightning Force warrior like that, and hadn’t he been chosen of all the tacticians to become Master? He would adapt, and adapt swiftly; his duty demanded it, and so it would be done.

Hmm. Company. Meleager paused for a moment, considering the silhouetted figure of the new Master Tactician. Castor wasn't someone he knew well, personally - they'd only spoken on business matters. Clearly, the crossbreed was very good at his job, despite the unfortunate combination of characteristics he'd inherited. Meleager supposed he was suited to his occupation. He'd have plenty of chance to prove himself, in any case. The dapple-grey was expecting a lot of his new Master Tactician.
And now was a good a chance as any to get to know him. They would most likely be spending a lot of time together. The grey stallion headed up the hill again, stopping a short distance from the pale blue stallion. He glanced briefly at the sparring soldiers, picking out the crossbreed stallion he'd fought earlier. Now the tactician was here, he would have to mention the youngster to him. The company was unexpected, perhaps, but not entirely unwelcome.
Meleager looked across at his companion on the hill. "Master Tactician Castor," he greeted him with a brief smile. "Looking for talent?"

He had heard the encroaching hoofbeats but not taken them in very well, so while his mind was somewhat surprised, his body did not startle. Instead, he turned to the dapple grey stallion with a slight smile. “Meleager hallah, good day to you... Yes, I suppose I was in a way. Most just looking, though, seeing all the different strengths the warriors of this herd have over all... There seem to be a lot, to be honest.”
No matter how many times he watched hooves, teeth and horns fly at a Hellene’s sparring partner he never ceased to be impressed. Possibly because he could never hope to be anything like that himself. Fast, he was that, agile, fairly, and his stamina wasn’t so terrible but... No power.
Even most of the Ichsa down there were stronger than he. Oh well, his talents lay in other areas, as proven by his promotion. Worrying about what he did not have wasn’t productive in the least, and so the blue-coated stallion turned his mind from it.
“I saw you down there just now, Meleager hallah,” the Master Tactican said after a moment with a smile to the herdleader. “I’ve not seen you spar before. You’re good.”

The grey stallion hadn't realised that Castor had been there that long. But then he rarely noticed much while he was sparring. He smiled back. "I need to be. But thank you, all the same. It's good to know I'm not losing my touch." The thought of that made him shiver slightly - not noticeably. To lose his abilities in battle would most likely be to lose his position as leader, and Meleager hated the idea of being deposed. An honourable death in combat, or dying as Helen had from injuries sustained whilst protecting the herd, or like Phaedra, from old age - those he would be content with. But not to lose his power.
The grey stallion pushed such thought to the back of his mind, and shook himself back to the moment. A pause, and then he remembered the conversation. "Have you seen anyone to catch your eye? What did you think of that young stallion I was sparring with? ...I thought he showed promise." Meleager glanced at the tactician, hoping for agreement, but also, and more importantly, hoping for honesty. A Master Tactician who always agreed with him would be of no use at all.

Castor gave another slight smile, gratified that his opinion was wanted outside of battle planning. “I thought he was good,” the dark-maned stallion said easily with a nod for emphasis. “Quite skillful, passionate, didn’t look as though he was holding back just because you’re his superior... Yes, with a bit more honing I think he’ll be a fine warrior. I can’t speak for his mental capacities from up here, or I might tip him to make officer one day. Definite young talent down there...”
Here he was calling a stallion who was probably of an age with him ‘young’. Still, no matter, perhaps he had a right to given his position; were he still a tactician rather than Master Tactician, his view might be quite different, and is was always easier to feel elder and perhaps a little superior from the outside... Not older than or superior to Meleager, though. Oh he knew he was brighter than the herdleader, far brighter in all likelyhood, but not superior.
“It’s good to see everyone so diligent with their training despite these peaceful times,” Castor commented as a few pairs of fighters moved off to drink and a few more stepped up to face one another. “Complacency is always to be feared,” the crossbreed concluded as he recalled his now exiled sister.
Stupid b***h.
She should have... oh to hells with her, he knew very well that she could never have acted any other way than she had. Proud, impulsive, angry, not quite as smart as she thought she was and complacent. Thought she was so clever that nobody would never find out about her nice little plans for him. Castor’s ears flicked back for a moment before pricking up attentively once more. b***h.

"Mhhm," Meleager agreed vaguely, nodding. "Complacency is not a good thing." ...This really wasn't the best time to try Castor's willingness to perhaps change these peaceful times. It was too soon. Far too soon. He'd been Master Tactician all of what, two days? Meleager flicked his tails irritably, restraining himself. No, this really wasn't a good time. As much as he might want more action around here, he doubted the blue stallion would agree. Maybe he would think about it, let the younger stallion settle into his position first.
Meleager felt suddenly old, realising that he had just thought of both Castor and the stallion he'd sparred with as young. They were, true, younger than he was, but he was in his prime, and certainly not old. True, it seemed a long time since he'd been a colt, but it had not been a time he'd particularly enjoyed in any case. He much preferred being an adult, with actual power and influence.
That was another problem with peace. It made the time pass so slowly. Every day the same. Meleager shifted position restlessly. He needed something to occupy himself. And soon.
He sighed and looked over at the Master Tactician again. "Do you think these 'peaceful times' will last?" he asked. Best to get an idea, he told himself. Just see what he thinks...

Castor regarded his leader thoughtfully for a moment before turning his vivid blue eyes out over the sparring warriors. It was easier to think when he didn't have to look people in the face sometimes.
A pair of Ichsa rushed at one another with war cries, and the Master Tactician frowned thoughtfully. "Hard to say," the pair swept past one another and wheeled about, "all seems well with our neighbors from what I gather, no threats or slights that need to be answered... But I cannot see the future. This peace has lasted for a long time now; we prosper...."
The Ichsa rose up on their hindlegs to box and Castor shook his head slightly, turning at last back to Meleager.
"Perhaps, truly, there are none left who wish to challenge the warrior herd, the Hellenes, but I for one cannot believe that. Always there will be those who seek new territories, or perhaps simply the glory of destroying ones with the reputation that you, Meleager hallah, and Helen before you won for us. I do not know when, but I am certain that our peace will be disturbed in the end, and that the skills those warriors down there keep sharp will be called upon."
In truth, Castor rather thought that a bit of fighting was due by now. Not conquest, no, but... something. Something to keep them from sinking back into the soft, careless things they had been before Helen stepped up and raised fire in the hearts of those who would soon become the Hellenes. Whilst all might know in their heads that complacency was to be feared, to be fought at all costs, there were few Nequus who lived entirely by the heads, and hearts were softer things more easily lulled into a false sense of security. They were things to be wary of, were hearts.

...Hmm. The herdleader found Castor's answer annoyingly non-committal. He turned away briefly, looking out into the distance, and found that as he suppressed his irritation it turned to vague amusement. An answer perfectly suited to the blue stallion's occupation... and, truly, he had only answered the question Meleager had asked. The dapple-grey stallion supposed he couldn't find fault with that.
He turned back to his companion, smiling. "A good answer. ...Yes. In the end, peace is always disturbed, and the warriors will be needed. ...But not just them. The skills of the whole herd. And that includes Nequus like you. " He dipped his head thoughtfully. "I think you'll be good at your job. Not that I know anything about it, of course - but you wouldn't have been chosen if you weren't talented."
The dapple-grey stallion's attention was caught by a battle cry from below, and he looked down to see the stallion he'd sparred with taking on another challenger. And, beside him, a pair of Ichsa who looked both notably more experienced. Meleager watched them for a few moments, judging their skill. Perhaps he would challenge one of them later.
He glanced back at Castor. "I hope you'll get a chance to prove that talent, sometime soon," the grey stallion added.

Castor bowed his head to the Reya stallion’s complement, raising it again a moment later with a hint of a smile. “My thanks, Meleager hallah, I am glad to know that I’ve made a good impression...”
For now, he would have to try to keep his skills as sharp as was possible. The ‘games’ he played with the other tacticians were good practice, yes, but in the end they were just sparring matches, just like the warriors below him. Certainly he had won very many of his matches, one of the reasons he had been chosen no doubt, but that didn’t mean that he’d actually be any good when it came to planning out a real battle.
Still. He would succeed; he had to. He had been born for this role, and he’d excel at it or his bloodlines weren’t strange and convoluted.
“When the time does come for warriors to fight and for tacticians to plan,” the tall stallion went on, turning serious blue eyes onto Meleager, “I will not fail in my duties.” Letting his herd down, and indeed himself, simply was not an option. One way or another, he intended to ensure that the herds lands remained safe, and that any aggressors were either killed or driven out swiftly and efficiently. Phaedra, he was sure, would expect no less from her successor.

Meleager could appreciate the seriousness in the crossbreed stallion's eyes. Good, he was sincere. And he hadn't taken the bait of 'soon'... which was probably a good thing, all things considered. He had indeed made a good impression. Meleager could see himself liking the tactician, as much as any leader could like an advisor - there were always going to be disagreements. But he had liked Phaedra, most of the time, and as much as he might mourn her death, her successor seemed more than suitable.
"Good," the Reya stallion replied at last, "because the herd needs its tacticians as much as its warriors. I take it you understand the responsibility of your position... but still. As you said, complacency is to be feared. Don't let it happen to you."
He was almost sure that the blue stallion didn't need the warning, but there was no harm in giving it to him anyway. Most likely he had already been given it by some of the other council members he'd met since his promotion, along with various other warnings and advice. Meleager didn't think he had much to add - who could advise a tactician? The only advice he stuck by - tried to - was to listen to those who knew better than him in their own areas of expertise, and try to avoid making snap decisions. He doubted Castor was prey to the same failings he was. No, the trick was just to do your own job. The intelligent blue stallion had probably caught onto that a lot quicker than Meleager himself had.

Castor chuckled softly and gave a slow nod. “I shall, my lord, take as much care as I may to avoid such a thing. If I start to slip, I am quite sure that there will be somebody there to give me a sharp kick on the rump to snap me out of whatever madness I had descended into.” Privately, he knew that would not be necessary, not for him.
Funnily enough, his obsessive perfectionism had been one of the things those of his peers who hadn’t liked him had frowned upon. Oh, true, it might be a slight hitch in every day life, but so far as work went, it was a blessing. Never put off until tomorrow what can be done today, for doubtless tomorrow you will find another mound of tasks to complete.
“I suppose I ought to meet with all of the captains soon,” Castor said as the thought popped into his mind. When he had been merely a tactician (a very good one albeit) he hadn’t had the authority to seek a meeting with those fine warriors. Now he had no doubt that he could speak to all of them within seven days.
If he knew more about them all, the unfortunately-traited stallion reasoned, he would better know how to relate his plans to them. Alienating them was not an option, but neither was letting them get the impression that they could take the general gist of what he said to them and do as they pleased. Adlibbing, save when the situation in battle changed abruptly, was not welcome in the dark-maned stallions eyes.

Meleager smiled back, pleased with the Master Tactician's response to that. He wanted the younger stallion to succeed in his post, he realised, although he wasn't quite sure when he had decided that - at least because it would cause an awful lot of fuss to have to elect a replacement so soon. But there was no reason to think that he would not be entirely successful. So. The grey stallion was satisfied.
He noted Castor's comment about the captains and nodded. Of course... "Yes, good idea," he replied, wondering if there was anything he should mention about them. "They're very good at what they do, of course - very much warriors, all of them... for the most part you shouldn't have any trouble, although I suppose it's possible they might comment on your lack of experience - but they'll get used to you." The Reya stallion shrugged, with a brief smile at the tactician.
...Ah. Yes. "Oh, and the Omega Captain - Hades - I think you'll like him, or at least approve of his methods. He's organised, a logical sort." Perhaps 'calculating' might be more appropriate there, Meleager thought, but didn't amend his words. "Of course, many of the herd fear him, but he's a Nequus like us all." Or maybe it was just being in command that made him see the smaller Reya in a different light from many. He wasn't sure; but in any case, while he had great respect for the captain's abilities, he certainly didn't fear him.

Castor nodded again; he was doing that a lot today. “I am sure they are, or they would not have attained the rank they have.” And neither would he. The pale crossbreed hoped none of them snipped over his youth or similar; he didn’t want to end up personally wishing to show them up but unprofessionally knowing that he could not.
“I shall see to arranging meetings with them beginning tomorrow,” the white-marked Nequus decided, once more sharing his thought processes aloud with the powerfully-built herdleader. “I am sure,” he added with a thoughtful frown, “that I will find them all to be most interesting.”
In truth, he had rather wanted to meet the mysterious captain of the death force in particular for a while now.
His dark coat, the elite killers he led, the generalized pall of fear that seemed to surround the mere mention of his name drew the Reya-tailed, Ichsa-winged tactician in like insects to flame. Who was this shadow in this night, this stalking killer, this captain Hades? He had to confess a little fear of the idea of the stallion himself, but what were fears for but to be faced? He would come out of the encounter a better, stronger, braver Hellen, and he would also have met one of the captains which was two Shrila with one stone.
Smiling slightly to himself, the crossbreed turned his eyes for a moment to the sun (there was plenty of time before he needed to head off and feed yet) and then back down to the warriors. “So, Meleager hallah, what do you think of these times of peace?” The dappled stallion must hold some opinion on the matter if he’d bothered to ask about it. He suspected he knew what that opinion was, but it was worth asking all the same.

"Hmm." Meleager shifted restlessly and looked sidelong at the tactician. Best to try to be diplomatic, he supposed. "Peace is all well and good," he replied, "for a time. ...But it's in the Hellene spirit to want to fight. And I for one have had enough of peace, of lying in the sun all day and watching my herd grow slow and idle. Even these soldiers," he nodded at the sparring Nequus below them, "they might be practicing, but it's not the same."
He could feel the fire, the familiar desire for battle, rising in his veins, and he began to pace, still talking. "I should know as well as anyone - sparring is not like real battle. To be honest, I miss it." The grey herdleader halted suddenly, looking out into the distance. It was a moment before he continued, wheeling round to face the dark-maned stallion again. That fire and the remnants of old anger glinted in his eyes, but he seemed in control. "...No, peace is alright in its place, in its time. But battle is in our blood, and it's unnatural to be at peace for too long. Besides, " he added, his gaze flicking back to the soldiers, "we mustn't let ourselves get used to it."
They may be great warriors, the dapple grey stallion thought as he watched an Ichsa charge down an opponent, but how long can they remain the best without real enemies to fight? How long before we forget our ways? ...Never, he thought. I will never forget what it is to be a warrior, and those who are worthy of being Hellene soldiers, of bearing one of the six marks, they will never forget that either.
The thought did little to quench the restlessness in his heart as he glanced back at the tactician.
