This is a discussion for the third movie:

This movie gets a lot of grief and I can see why, but I still like it. It's my least favorite, but I still think it's good. To me, the first two movies were interesting because you have Rachel always causing as stink about something, whether it be a rude outburst from Anne, the jersey cow getting loose, or something else, and the third movie doesn't have Rachel in it at all except for a small scene (I know that because I'm currently playing Rachel in our AoGG series production). She's such an energetic character and she brings that comic relief to it.

Also, Anne just didn't seem like herself. You had her breaking slates over boys heads, and shouting eccentrically at men, and making theatrical apologizes, but in the third movie, you just didn't have her doing it. Sure the third movie was more serious, but still.

i like them all equally...i know the third didn't stay with the other two, but it was still good...the only part i didn't like a whole lot was the war. Its a sad part of life and no one should have to go through. I hope i don't offend anyone, its just my opinion. I don't think anyone should loose their life over it. And i'm worried that my brother will try to get in the army like he said, and i'll be a nervous wreck every single day.

The war was pretty interesting to me, but I like war movies. I haven't been able to watch the third movie since my soldier was killed in Afghanistan, and it bothers me when I read the book that the movie is based on.

I think the reason the third movie gets so much slack is that Anne and Gilbert's daughter, Rilla, was the basis of the novel the movie was based on. Anne and Gilbert were much older when WWI was going on.

Of course, correct me if I'm wrong, as I'm not 100% sure.

Yup. She was named after Marilla and called Rilla. I think they had six children by the end of the books. I've not read them, but I've read summaries of them over the years. smile

What is your favorite scene in the third movie?

I personally really like this movie, of course of the three it is my least favorite but still its really well done.

yes it is based on rilla but they bring it back around to Anne and Gilberts life at the beginning of the fifth book when they move to Glen St Mary. the problem is they change anne so much.

but i think she is the way she is in this movie because of the war content. i think had she been the encouragable anne we've known it wouldn't have fit in with the sorrow and the tragedy that the first world war was. historically it is accurate and there is a lot that you don't see that Anne needs to protray in her actions because of her 'experience' at the front. not to mention how down cast would you be if first you saw your best friend collaps in tears because her husband goes off to war, then your soon to be husband says 'marry me and let me go' and then people you've known all your life were dying or missing in action. i know how i feel having lost a friend in this resent war in afganistan. i think Megan Follows did an amazing job of being the Anne that never gives up and yet she is the changed anne, the anne that has seen the horrors of war and who just missed her husband. to have been so close that she saw him and then he was gone. not to mention to see fred in such a state.

i really think this movie was well done. if you take into consideration that the time period they were protraying in the first two movie were late victorian leading into the war but the books go further back to the height of Victorian era and it isn't until Anne and Gilberts last daughter is 15 in the books that the war begins. they lead into it well i think and the idea that only five years had passed since Anne and Gilbert were engaged when in reality nearly 15 years had passed for the actors... Anne of green gables was filmed in 1985 (Megan Follows was 16 ) and then Anne of green gables the sequel in 1987 (Megan at 18 ) and then this one was filmed in 2000 (Megan at 31 ). so techincally 13 years later... Megan and Johnathan looked Damn good for portraying their 21-25 year old selves when they were actually like in their 30s or so. Megan had been married, had two kids and divorced between Anne of green gables the sequel and Anne the continuing story which kinda has to put the whole change into her charater into perspective, not to mention Megan didn't want to do another Anne movie (much like Maud Montgomery not wanting to write another Anne book after green gables and nearly being forced into seven more by her publisher).

So after that rant i just had, what i am really trying to say is that for the tone of the movie and the period that they were protraying it is a really good representation and it drives me crazy that this movie gets so much flack for it. it is really well done. i've seen it a tone of times and i still cry all the time. its got to be good if it tugs at the heart strings that much.

I totally agree with Angel. This movie gets way more crap than it needs. I do understand that it wasn't a straight continuation into Anne's House of Dreams, but still, it was amazingly done and i cry every time that i watch it . It is not my favorite of the movies, but I can tell that they put a lot of hard work into the making of it.

i do wish that they would've continued with the 5th book, but this movie gives a new perspective on the Anne and Gilbert that we all love. Even Diana is changed.. But i still think that this is a very well done movie through and through.

And I applaud Megan for going through every thing that she did, and still winding up doing the movie! I can tell that she was a little changed, but considering that it was 13 years and she was portraying herself as someone who was around 5-8 years younger than her actual age, she did an astounding job. Then Jon, wow, he is a couple years older than Megan and still did an astounding job, while looking like he was really in his twenties.

I gotta say though, the part where Gil and Anne find each other in Germany is probably my favorite scene in all three movies. it is just so sweet and romantic. I can tell that Megan and Jon really put their heart and soul into these parts.

oh, and sorry about the extremely long post.

I'll be the strange one and say that this is my favorite of the three movies and the one I watch most. I adore it. I remember when I first found out about it. The TV guide in the Washington Post had a big spread on it, and it was on the front cover (I still have the article).

I loved the difference in her character, and how well Follows portrayed Anne, should Anne have been in the midst of such action. As another poster said, it's all because Sullivan set the movies later than he should have, which caused the breakoff... and he does a good job of portraying what a small community such as Avonlea would go through in a time of war...even Josie is humble at one point.

And who could forget Dominique? I remember watching it the first time and wondering how that little baby always managed to survive. The qualities from the books are there...just shown in a different manner.

While I didn't pay much attention to it, I rewatched The Continuing Story again while falling asleep at night, and I totally agree with what Rosenal said, the book qualities are there, just shown in a different light.

However I will disagree with the majority; while I think Jon and Megan looked good, I don't think they looked like they looked to be around 21-25. Twenty five perhaps maybe. That doesn't mean that I don't think they didn't look good, just a little older. However, I think that they were supposed to look a little older. Stress (of war, trying to find Gilbert/Dominic, etc.) and such can make a big difference in your face. I don't think they look particularly early twenty-something, and I always thought they were given make up to look over; more stressed and therefore a little more aged.

the more i watch this movie, the more i love it. though i admit there are parts i skip because of content but i do really like it as a whole. i think the characters were portrayed amazingly for the subject matter. i mean... i'm not as old as they were when they filmed this movie but i do feel it sometimes. rolls reversed i guess. there was just something in Megan and Jonathan that made it so real. the pain and the sorror and the happiness. the scene when they fine each other is one of my favorite too. it just seemed perfect and fitting and yet so sad. it was kinda the sigh of relief for the movie and yet you knew there was more.

I love that Anne and Gilbert are reunited with one another because he heard her singing. It's so sweet. ^-^
