Well, for my most boring Sundays I purchased a subscription to Netflix, and while looking around I found this movie: "The Jane Austen Book Club." So, I decided to rent it, thought, what he hay, any movie somehow related to Jane Austen cannot be all that bad. And, well, it was not "bad!!" But I am not sure what to make of it...I quite enjoyed some parts of it, generally, the fact that the character's lives parallel the characters in Austen's books and that the references were not limited to Pride and Prejudice, or at least greatly focused on only to that book. But, then again, it was also...how to put it...very "Hollywood-ish" So, anybody else seen it? Any thoughts?

I haven't seen it, but I don't know that I really have a desire to see it either... It looked kinda weird to me when I saw the cover and read the back..so I opted not to rent it. Glad to hear I wasn't missing out on anything spectacular.

I saw it on youtube and thought it was funny. Just looking at it as just another comedy movie; it was great, very funny, decent plot, good characters. From a Jane Austen movie point, it could have used more references or something along those lines. On the whole I thought it was enjoyable and worth watching if there is nothing on the TV and you want something lighter then most of the Jane Austen movies its good.

I LOVED the Northanger Abbey reference! Prudie had awesome accents and as far as the plot went, it wasn't too bad! I liked it but I would never buy it! heart

Yep, exactly, while it did not have MANY Austen references, I like the fact it alluded to all of the books...not just one *cough*Pride and Prejudice*cough* like other ones I have seen.
Aww...NO!! who voted an "OK..." on the poll question!!

It was actually a best selling novel from 2004. I've never seen the movie but The Damn Sasquatch cannot put the book down!

I saw the movie and found that I rather liked it. I don't know if I would buy it, but if I ever started a Jane Austen Collection I would have to include it. Unfortunately, I am too poor at the moment to even attempt any type of movie collection. I think the author of the book is also the same one who wrote "The Hours" - another movie based on Virginia Wolf's life and works.

I thought it interesting. I saw it at the cheap cinema in my town last year by myself. I found Prudie to be the most interesting, mostly because she's the misunderstood nerd with a crazy mother. mrgreen Yeah, my mum's not at all as bad as her, but I found it to be a nice homage to Jane. And while it was more concerned with it's own problems than with the books at some points, the problems were similar to the plots of each of the books. The backstabbing, the familial ideas and the relationships all hearkened different characters from the book. And I loved the quote: "Reading Jane is a frickin' minefield!"

I have watched it three times within the last four days...I'm not obsessed, it's just being played over and over on HBO here in the Philippines, and since it's a very boring summer, I have nothing to do...but watch...
I actually liked it. I love how the Austen's books bring them all closer together, and let's face it, Austen is the solution to any problem. I loved how they all interacted, and their different opinions about the novels. It gives you, not only a great story, but also a new insight into the books. I mean, let's face it, not all of us would have thought that there was "menace in Emma," "Charlotte Lucas is gay," or even "Mansfield Park is like Star Wars." So it gives us a different perspective on the novels from 6 very different people with everyday problems in their everyday lives. Wonderful. wink

Wonderful. wink I think it was showing on HBO in the US at around the same time, because one of my guy friend's really like it, strangely enough...he thought that Grig was a great version of what guys should be. So then I told him to read Austen.
