"So what do you wanna do next, Cal?" Shauna asked after taking a big bite out of a caramel apple, squealing softly. It tasted so good! One arm was linked with the younger boy next to her and the other, the one holding her apple, was wrapped around a giant stuffed fox. "Ohoh! How 'bout that?" She pointed out to a haunted house ride, gasping loudly when she dropped her toy on the ground like she'd just dropped a baby.

Honestly, it's just a stuffed fox. Oh well.

You've just got to love Gaia. Carnivals popping up out of nowhere? It looked like so much fun though! Shauna just had to bring Cal along! She never got to see him! The fox stopped and backtracked the step to the fox again, letting go of Cal for a brief moment to pick it back up then link arms with him again. What? Buddy system, damnit! There were big crowds! She didn't want to lose him. "Anyways! It's completely up to you."

Cal looked wide-eyed over the large puff of cotton candy he was currently grazing on at all the sights and sounds and smells of people and circus food and, somewhere off in the distance, animals voicing their displeasure at being caged. It was just like television, only outside the box! He had never been to a real carnival before, but he didn't regret being dragged bodily to one.

He turned his head at Shauna's question, a mouthful of spun sugar melting sticky-sweet on his tongue as he watched her recover her plush fox. He knew all about haunted houses from TV; they broke a lot, and people died in them, and there were all manner of stoners and dogs with speech impediments running around to cheesy music. Cal shook his head negatively, a shimmer of his tattoos preceding the red X that appeared above it to enforce his opinion of such things.

He glanced around for an alternative, finally gesturing with the arm not firmly tucked around Shauna's at large, wobbly letters proclaiming "Fun House Here!" He tilted his head at the fox girl, a question mark quickly replacing the X hanging in midair above him.

Joce had never been to a carnival before, so when she had approached the booths set up front with 'ticket sales' emblazoned in red, she had been stumped as to just why the corpulent man thrust out a corpulent hand and asked (in a voice that could only belong to a chain-smoker or an un-oiled fence hinge) 'five gold pieces, young miss'. She promptly responded 'You have to pay?' to which the man pointed at the word sales and thrust his thumb sideways; not your usual hitch-hiker's thumb, but in a clear 'hit the road, kiddo' thumb.

Paying to have fun was ridiculous, the green-eyed child concluded. That's why Joce decided not to.

Her first thought was that the movies were a load of crock. Scaling a fence was not as easy as the made it out to be. Then again, she couldn't really remember people throwing themselves across barriers with a stuffed bear tucked beneath their arm. Joce didn't have to be a mind reader to know that Spinelli was not enjoying his coach-ticket across the fence stuffed in the hollow of her armpit. So, after three trial-climbs, a scraped palm, a run in her striped stockings and a severe wedgie, Joce had been up and over the rusty chain-links and was instantly blasted by the sights and sounds and smells of her first real carnival.

She picked up a trodden plastic bracelet on her way into the main-street ('Can you survive the horrors of the Haunted House?'), slipping it over her wrist - now it looked like she paid, at least. Standing amid the bustling figures of toddlers and antsy parents, amorous teens and the cranky elderly, Jocelyn felt a world apart.

A row of blinking bulbs caught her eye. Win a prize! Bears galore!

The Shattered girl held Spinelli at arm's length, "You look like a man who needs a gal. You need a gal, Spinelli?"

He didn't answer.

"What? Oh. Are you gay?"

The flashing lights from a nearby ride reflected in the raggedy bear's single eye - it made him look angry. Joce let out a giant sigh of relief.

Shauna was getting a kick out of the way Cal was communicating with her. It was like a cartoon! Only this was real life! The fox let out a bright laugh at the sight of the red X and nodded in recognition. Okay, no haunted houses. Good thing they hadn't done many of the rides yet or Shauna would be out of ideas!

He didn't look the type to want to start off with that giant spinning ball over there just yet. Maybe she could convince him to do it with her later. The fun house though? That looked interesting. She glanced over at that and then back at Cal in time to see the x change to a question mark, smiling brightly and jerking her head in the direction of the fun house. "Wanna go do that?" She caught a glimpse of blonde hair when she was turning back to check the line for the fun house.

Wait a second...was that...? Shauna blinked and squinted a little, leaning over in that direction like that would help her recognize the blonde haired girl. It was her! "...HEY JOCE!" Shauna called, waving an arm in the air to get her attention. Don't worry, she was careful not to deafen dear Cal.

Cal nodded eagerly, his messy, multi-colored hair flopping with his enthusiastic confirmation. The crooked, odd-looking structure had FUN right in the title--by definition, it couldn't suck! He had started towards the end of the line, but jumped and spun on his heel as Shauna shouted, nearly losing his cotton candy in the process.

Standing on his tip-toes, he could almost see who she was waving in the general direction of--it could have been a little blonde girl, a sad-faced clown on a smoke break, or a disgruntled mother dragging her screaming, bawling child thankfully elsewhere--and waved too, despite not knowing why. Why not? The more, the merrier!

And if Cal looked down, next to him, he'd see a purple-haired toddler stoically waving with them. Not that Papree knew who or what they were waving at. Around her neck was a plastic card on a string, with the words "HELLO MY NAME IS PAPREE" written on the back. If one were to flip the card around, the same handwriting continues on the back, reading "If found after the carnival, please return to Seraphim Call located at Isle De Gambino."

She'd wandered off away from Seraphim and Ren - she'd gotten bored riding THE EGG SCRAMBLER! thirteen times in a row, and seeing Ren turn green and hurl over the side twice. The last time she saw them, Seraphim was pushing Ren on the ride for their fourteenth whirl and Ren looked like he was going to make a mess for a third time. Papree decided that there was other and better things to watch, and had quietly slipped away.

Sitting nearby on the back of a bench, her long, sharp wings nearly hanging down to the ground behind her, sat Brownie. She was alone, having had the strength of will to leave her little brother home despite his growing ability to execute prime sulkface, and she was bored. Not expecting much else but more boredom, Brownie had been pleasantly surprised to see good ol' Ear Head had strolling through her line of sight several minutes previous. With her was some vaguely familiar Lite Brite boy, and soon enough the pair was joined by Grape Girl and being approached by some similarly familiar blonde girl with a bear. In direct contrast to all the commotion, Brownie remained still. She might have been bored, but she was also feeling ridiculously lazy.

Cal couldn't, for the life of him, make out who they were waving at over the heads of tall people and a rainbow of merrily-bobbing balloons, and his arm was getting tired anyway. He lowered it, feeling slightly disappointed; he had been looking forward to meeting a friend of the fox girl's! Huffing a sigh, he looked around for something to stand on, something to make himself a little bit taller, and found his gaze caught by a tiny waving hand and a head of lurid purple hair.

He looked down, narrowly avoiding getting a finger in his eye, and wondered where this little waving person had come from. She hadn't come with them, he was certain--he was pretty sure, anyway--and Shauna, on his other side, was still waving to who-knows-whom obliviously. Shrugging, Cal crouched beside the little girl to get a better look at the card around her neck.

"HELLO MY NAME IS PAPREE," it said.

"HELLO MY NAME IS CAL," read a bubble that formed over the mute Shattered's head in response. He flashed a grin at the little girl, looking to see if he could find any sign of a parent looking desperately for their child. He didn't, at his current level, see anything more than long sets of legs striding purposefully away and shorter legs struggling to keep up, and a garbage can, and a bench, and a girl on the bench who looked vaguely familiar in the way that people with sharp knives attached to them are hard to forget.

Cal looked from the sharp-winged girl on the bench to the purple-haired girl at his feet and back again before grasping Papree's shoulders and turning her, still waving, in Brownie's direction.

He had felt it.

At first they were like tickles, but some of them really started to hurt. Regardless, they strongest urges came from this area, and so here he was.

A fat hand stopped him from walking in. 5 gold pieces, it said; at least he was pretty sure some part of the fatness had said it.

Asrafel looked down into the pockets of his pants, which were clearly too tight to be holding any money, and gave the blob of living flesh a regretful smile. He then walked into the booth that the man was wedged in. Not much noise came from the scuffle within, and it was unclear whether Asrafel had done anything at all. Nevertheless, he walked out of the booth and into the carnival, unhindered by any waiting hand anymore.

The crowd was thick enough to keep his unusual appearance hidden. He sat down at a bench, and gave the girl (Brownie) beside him a bright, friendly smile.

She was one of the wrongs. His eyes continued searching, trying to locate where he felt right. His eyes settled on the fun house, and he let out a soft laugh.

When they had emerged, the crowd must have been thick enough to hide their presence, he presumed. He could almost imagine the scene; shadows, slinking back away from their hosts, hiding in the crowd and converging together in that one single place.

And now they waited. He didn't want them to have to wait too much longer.

Asrafel caught the sight of Calumet waving at the girl beside him, and he smiled, looking over at her. "It looks like there's more of us here!"

He stood up, and held out his hand to her, with a sweet smile.

"Let's not keep them waiting!"

Brownie's spine stiffened slightly as Cal noticed her and turned Waving Purple Girl to face her as well. She quickly looked to the left and right to see if she could slip away, and in the process, her gaze fell on the very smiley Asrafel. Strange. She hadn't seen him arrive.

"Yeah," she replied, with a small smile of her own. Asra was one of Brownie's favorite people, and certainly one of the only ones she was always unconditionally happy to see. Still...

She sighed, the great huff of upturned air ruffling her long bangs. "'Kay, let's go." Brownie slid her way sideways across the length of the bench and carefully hopped off the end, coming back around to take Asra's outstretched hand.

Papree only stared stoically at the older boy as he read her nametag, although she was intrigued by the vivid colors on his skin, staring openly. She hadn't been taught that it was rude to stare, as Seraphim practiced it openly herself with her own running commentary.

She was, in fact, going to ignore anything he was going to say and focus on his colors when he didn't speak at all. In complete amazement, she stared at the floating bubble above his head, filled with magical words. "Ca-al," she slowly read out loud. Then she decided that a closer look and examination was most definitely needed and attempted to climb on the older Shattered's torso so she could perch on his shoulders while he wasn't paying attention to her.

While Calumet definitely wouldn't find a concerned or worried parent, he'd probably spot a bored-looking young woman with silver-blue hair in a braid, apparently waiting for Ren from All My Gaians to stop heaving his stomach contents onto the ground. They don't look like they've recently misplaced a toddler however, and probably didn't warrant a second glance at all.

Papree stops attempting to climb Mt. Calumet when she notices him waving again and turns around to see who he's waving at; it's someone she's never seen. This doesn't prevent her from joining in his waving and in fact adds a second hand to wave with when Asra appears, giving the impression of a swaying flower in the middle of a typhoon.

Oh wow! There were a whole bunch of their kin here today! Shauna blinked and looked down at Papree, smiling brightly and waving a few fingers to her. "Hello there! Nice to meet you, Papree...why're you all by yourself?" That was odd. When she was little like her her mother never let Shauna out of her sight! Maybe Papree's mother really was somewhere nearby keeping watch over her little girl.

"Do you wanna come play in the fun house with us?"

Her ears twitched when she heard the ring of a very familiar voice over the crowd. No way, he was really here? ...Well...carnivals were fun, and Asra loved fun! So why not? The fox looked up to see if it was really Asra she heard and had the brightest smile when she saw him with Brownie. "ASRA! BROWNIE!" Shauna squealed, throwing her arms around Asra in a big hug when he reached their group.

...Wait a second...

"...You're actually wearing pants?" Shauna blinked and looked down. Huh...weird for Asra...oh well. She smiled again and hugged Brownie with just as much excitement (She was careful of her wings though). "It's so nice to see you two! We were about to go into the fun house. Wanna come? I hear they have some freeeeaky mind game stuff in there." She said with a laugh. Oh, Shauna, if only you knew.

Calumet flashed a smile of welcome at Brownie and Asrafel as they joined their rainbow colored band. He waited patiently for Shauna to stop throwing herself at the newcomers before grasping her elbow in one hand, reaching down to grasp one of Papree's hands with his other. He tugged them gently in the direction of the Fun House, clarifying his point with the flashing green arrow that appeared above him and an inquisitive tilt of his head.

Asrafel looked pleased as punch when Brownie took his hand. He clasped hers gently and led her over to Shauna and Calumet, who seemed to be already heading into the Fun House. He rolled his eyes at the mention of pants, and shrugged.

"There's so many people around, in crowds, pushing and jostling... It would get awkward really quickly." He laughed, and gave a quick look around; his search brought Joce into his view, and he let Brownie's hand go with a squeeze and release before heading to the girl.

"Why hello, young lady." Asrafel greeted her jokingly, and slung his arm under hers. "A lovely little thing such as you shouldn't be walking around without an escort! Allow me."

And with that, he guided Joce behind the group, heading to enter the Fun House.

Asrafel gave Joce a second glance, and smiled slowly. Young, yes, but she was a pretty little thing. But ahh, this was not the time for such thoughts. He cleared his head and looked at the decoration surrounding the entrance to the Fun House as they walked in.

"I'm sure this will live up to it's name, and be lots of fun!"
