So I have my old squier p bass that I want to defret because #1 I want a fretless bass and #2 the neck is twisted therefore making fretbuzz that is impossible to eliminate. Anyway I know the materials I will need- woodfiller, superglue, and sandpaper. What's the best method for pulling the frets out? I've heard using a soldering iron to heat the frets and then pulling them out with nips is the best way... does anyone know any other methods? How long does the process take? Anything I should be aware of during this process? If anyone could offer some insight I would really appreciate it.

I think it's a waste of your time. You'll never get a decent tone out of your bass if you convert your current low-budget neck. The quality of the wood is really really bad if you want to convert it to 'fretless'. You could try and buy a new neck. They're not really cheap, but it does allow you to use your bass again. Plus, if the neck's twisted, it'll be really hard to achieve a good tone.

Thanks, I'm kinda bored most of the time and I figured it would be a good way to bring a little of my interest back to that old bass. Since I'm on a low budget I figured it would be a nice little project. It may never have a great sound, but it will be excellent ear training. I use a nice Fender Reggie Hamilton standard jazz for my main axe anyway so I'm really not too worried about getting great tone out of it(it is a squire after all).

I haven't gotten around to it yet. I'm still debating whether to do it or not, making the decision may take a while blaugh

Haha, I thought about defretting my Squier once, but then realized that thing wasn't worth my time.

I'm still without a fretless. D:
