Okay, so. I am very soon going to descend into the hell that is college applications. I really need a way to make me stand out from other applicants, especially since several of the schools I'd really like to be accepted to are very, very selective. In fact, my first choice school is an Ivy League. gonk gonk gonk

So, in order to stand out from the crowd I've come up with the idea of creating a website to act as a supplemental source of information about me. I'd fill out all the regular applications, but I'd attach the url of the site, and politely ask them to take a quick visit.

All the college books I've been pouring over tell me to add something interesting to my applications...most say to send a DVD, PowerPoint presentation, or CD of music that keeps you motivated.

I was thinking that a website would be pretty unique, and it would just be a way to let them know some more information about me. Plus, it'll be a chance to show off my HTML/CSS skills. 4laugh

    SO.

    Good idea? Bad idea?

    Let me know! Thanks! heart

That sounds like a good idea. They always want to see something creative, so why not give them something that is? I wish you goodluck with everything, and post to keep us updated!

    Thanks so much! :]

I feel that I really need to stand out...so, hopefully this will work.

I'll probably be posting with more questions as I go further along in the process. 3nodding

Admissions offices really do love getting a bit of variation from the standard paper application... even an extra letter is enough to put you on top of the pile because most people just do the minimum.

I agree with Je, hit up the webbie to the fullest. But remember, everything you post there needs to be super professional. College is all about preparation for professions... so show them that you have potential and keep things clean, organized, and informative without it looking too geocities. If you've got the skills, flaunt them. There's no modesty when applying to colleges.

Maybe even include a professional resume so the webbie could double as a job application.

This is a good quote...I'll be sure to keep it in mind.

That's what I'd basically anticipated doing...just an extra addition to let them know things about me that don't usually come up in the regular application process (my hobbies, organizations I've volunteered for, etc.)

There won't be any Myspace-like pictures of me or any obnoxious flashing gifs. I'll make it attractive, but like you so expertly said, it won't be "too geocities". 3nodding

A website sounds like a great idea! You can really go to town with this (professionally speaking, that is!). You can make it a portfolio showcasing your strengths, interests, more writing samples (!!) while giving the admissions office a better idea of who you are and why they should accept you. I would love to see it when you start working on it!

I also do some HTML and CSS...^_^

Wow, I hadn't thought of putting any extra writing samples up. Maybe some of the writing pieces that I've written in school that I'm particularly proud of? Thanks for the ideas and encouragement. :]

I'm gonna try and to the coding all on my own (so that I can use the website itself as an example of my HTML skillzzzz), but I'll be sure to ask you if I have any problems. ^^

That sounds like an amazing idea! It would definately make you memorable. You could even go on to use it when you apply for jobs after college (even though that's a long way into the future.) I certainly think that if I was sorting through the applications, seeing something like that would improve my mood and really stand up.
