I was just re-watching Anne of Avonlea and it just hit me why Gilbert and Christine called their wedding off, and why it wasn't fair to her.

Gilbert never loved Christine in the first place, and it wasn't fair to her for them to be married when he really loves another woman. Just like he said to Anne, "There will never be anyone for me but you." Sure, Gil probably liked her and they could have made it work out, but he probably would never be happy.

It's crazy sad in a sense. Think about it; Anne went to Gilbert when he was on his deathbed so to speak, and even had said, "If Gilbert were to .... not knowing how I really feel..." so she knew that his prognosis wasn't very good. If he had passed away, it would have been tragic for both of them, I think.

Any comments?

very true. I'm sure that Christine only liked Gil too. It sorta states in one of the books, i don't remember which, that Christine goes off and happily marries some other guy. I might be wrong though. I don't remember too well. I personally like Christine more in Anne of Avonlea than I do in the books. In the books, Christine is really flirty with Gil when he and Anne go and visit her. In the movies, Christine is really sweet and she stands up for Anne when Josie and another girl start slamming on her. I don't get what's up with that, but I do agree that it would've been tragic for both Anne and Gilbert if a. Gilbert had married Christine, b. If Anne had married Roy Gardner (aka Emiline's dad in the movies), and c. if Gilbert had died. Anne would not have been happy long if she had married Roy, and Gilbert would've been miserable without Anne. Anne would've also figured out that she loved Gilbert after a while, and if he had married Christine, that would be tragic for Anne, and if Gilbert knew that Anne loved him, he would be tortured too. Then we all know what would go wrong if Gilbert died. sad

I've never read the books except for bits and pieces of them, so I've never had the other insight redface However I did think that Christine was just too kind in the movies, I always knew there had to be more for her character, haha.

There could have been so many different things to make the Anne stories more tragic than they already are (I think that three turned down proposals, a near death experience, AND announcing undying love to one another during the near death experience is tragic) but I just love how it all ends out.

I just love how it all comes out. I always knew that Anne was a romantic trilogy, but sometimes it takes a while to "hear between the lines." Or, like me, you just have to watch a couple thousand times to catch the true meaning of some things. ^_^

i think that they were portraying it well that during the time period where gil and anne never saw each other Gil probably believed himself in love just because Anne wasn't there to show him any different. it was when he saw her that he realised.

I think you have a point there, that Gilbert believed to be in love. However I think seeing Anne again in Kingsport was the turning point, when he seen how disappointed she was when he said he was engaged to Christine. I wouldn't be surprised if they called their wedding off soonafter Anne and Gilbert met up with one another that one time.

i would agree with you there. even before Gil got sick. unless he felt he was obligated now. he had made a promise and asked her and in that time men would have gone through with it. so if they though he was going to die then it would have been easier for him to break the engagement otherwise people would have believe he "used her very ill" and that would have been even more unfair to Christine.

Exactly, that's a good thought too. He could have waited until he was really sick to call off the wedding, and therefore it made him look a little bit better. I mean, back then (and even now for people) when you make a commitment, you stick with it. That seems more logical.

The wheels in our heads are turning biggrin I totally love that I can discuss things like this with other people who are knowledgeable about Anne! I can't discuss things like this with anyone!

i totally agree with you. thats why i love guilds cause you can always find something to talk about when you have a common interest. and anne is such an indepth character and story that there is so much to uncover and discover and really talk about.

I'm so glad that you thought to make this guild! ^_^ I love being able to thoroughly talk about something I really love!

Yeah, I'm kind of surprised that there wasn't an Anne guild, but honestly, I never thought about making one myself. I probably would have made one if I had given it the least bit of thought, haha.

I was quite surprised a couple weeks ago when I searched for a Nicholas Sparks guild and there were none. I might have to make one. ^_^

since the GGN started i have had guilds cause i like them way better then trying to roam through the forums. then i got hacked, but i got my account back with help from the admins and all my stuff (i was really lucky) and so i stopped roaming forums all together unless i started threads and i only visited the ones that i had linked too.

I prefer the guilds because they are a lot smaller and personal, you can really get involved in something you like, and have some legitimate discussions and not have to worry about spam and so forth.

i totally agree! with guilds there are always interests between members. i mean thats the whole point of the guilds right? so you always find people to talk to!

on a side note.

i had a person ask me today if i got why diana and anne didn't know the difference between the rasberry cordial and the curent wine. aside from anne not knowing what the current wine was and not having any of the drink how come diana didn't know the difference?

I always wondered that too. But then I remember Diana telling Anne, "It's awfully nice, Anne. Much better than Mrs. Lynde's. She brags about hers all the time." and then says, "It doesn't taste a bit like it." I always wonder if Diana knew, and was just wanting to have some fun, not knowing what the (short) outcome was going to be.
