What are your theories on Frederica Bernkastel and Rika Furude? Are they the same person? Are they two different entities? Is Hinimizawa just one of Beatrice's games?

What do you think?

I follow the most basic of theories.

Bernkastel embodies herself into Rika Furude and Lambadelta embodies herself into Takano Miyo (or however you'll phrase it). This is almost impossible to not be correct for so many reasons that I shouldn't have to name (appearance, Lambadelta's bitterness at loosing their last game, saying Frederica really fast, etc). The 'game' ends when the other is defeated. However, there is a third force that neither had counted on. So while Bernkastel might countlessly loose, before Lambadelta can claim her victory, Hanyuu restarts the world. Thus restarting the game. Bernkastel doesn't count on Rika's human friends being very useful but soon is shown otherwise when Keiichi remembers the past (and so on and so far, you know the drama from Kai already). In the end, Takano doesn't kill Bernkastel or her friends and admits defeat (ala Kai ending) or you get the Matsuri ending. In either case, Bernkastel triumphs in the game. Rika is returned her body and (Kai ending) Bernkastel goes back in time to tell Miyoko the consequences that the future will hold for her, thus changing the future for Rika. The two Witches then return to Beatrice.

Or something like that. There are many holes in my theory though! Hahaha... sweatdrop

Big ol' Wall of Text up ahead. Be warned. D:
But is has helpful pictures to illustrate points! Yay!

My view kind of stems from taking Bernkastel and Lambdadelta’s “game” in a literal sense.

I see Takano Miyo and Furude Rika as Lambdadelta and Bernkastel’s game pieces, while Hinamizawa in the board. Furude Rika is not Bernkastel, and Bernkastel is not Rika; Furude Rika is more of a proxy for Bernkastel (same with Lambdadelta and Takano).

The universe of Umineko no
naku koro ni (the universe the Three Witches exist on) is the “true” universe, while the Higurashi no naku koro ni universe (where Furude Rika, Maebara Keiichi, etc. exist) is the game board for Bernkastel and Lambdadelta’s game.

Taking this stance, I think there are three Bernkastels (assuming that Bernkastel is the “true” form): there is Bernkastel (the witch), Furude Rika (the game piece), and Frederica Bernkastel (the person who collects the TIPs).

Bernkastel directly created Furude Rika and Furude Rika is Bernkastel’s piece in the game (a.k.a. Higurashi no
naku koro ni). Frederica Bernkastel started as a collection of Furude Rika’s past lives, and grew into her own identity. The plane Frederica Bernkastel exists on seems to be between the Witches universe and Furude Rika’s universe. I see Fredrica Bernkastel as a fusion of Bernkastel and Furude Rika, thus the name “Frederica Bernkastel”. [Furude Rika becomes, when said quickly, sound like “Fredrica”, and Bernkastel is obvious.]

It is shown that the player (you) also exists on this plane and watches the “game”. We are able to directly communicate with Frederica Bernkastel via the TIPS and the poems. Frederica Bernkastel definitely knows the player exists, because she talks with us through her poems.

I also take into account the power of the Three Witches. The Three Witches have a “Rock-Paper-Scissor” type of relationship. Beatrice is rock, Bernkastel in scissors, and Lambdadelta is paper. Bea beats Bern, Bern beats Lambda, and Lambda beats Bea.

Bernkastel’s power is to keep metaphorically rolling the dice, even when she has a small chance of winning. Therefore, no matter what, Bernkastel will eventually win against Lambdadelta. If this is true, then what is the point of Lambdadelta even playing a game?

Well, if Bernkastel keeps rolling the dice, but looses that roll (ex. Rika dies), then Lambdadelta automatically wins. So, there is no way for Lambdadelta to win directly, but if Bernkastel looses, then that means Lambdadelta wins by default. That is Lambdadelta’s victory.

In the Higurashi no
naku koro ni universe, Bernkastel’s power also manifests itself; that is Hanyuu’s purpose in Higurashi no naku koro ni, to restart the world and roll the dice again.

*goes to hang self* I think about this game waaaaaay to much during my free time.
