So, trying my hand at the Munny craze.
This was really fun to make! Spent a couple days on him. Totally worth it. I have already started a second one. (Medusa!)

Here's the sculpt:

I used Sculpy III rather than the super sculpy

And here's the final painted piece:

Cute huh!

Ohhhhhh that's incredible! I love the way you've added sculpted elements, and the way you've painted it gives it a beautiful textured look. And the design is just damn cool. Truly jealous of your skills. Do you have any tips for someone about to do a custom Munny?

I did a Munny! I love mine. I just need to do a star headband for her. I didn't sculpt her but drew on her. Next time I'll sculpt her. This is very very good btw. Question... sculpy needs to be baked in the oven. Did you sculpt on the head and then threw it in the oven to bake? Just wondering.

I wish you well.

I needs an unicorn horn...

Wow, thanks so much!
A few tips - Wash it first, it's got a coating on it from production that will make it harder for paint or other medium to adhere. Make sure you use something like dish soap, with no moisturizers in it.

I didn't give mine a base coat, but if you're going to, I would say to use the spray style gesso rather than brushing it on.

If you're using acrylic paint, check the translucency. It's easier to use an opaque color than building up a lot of layers of a translucent paint, since the thicker the layering, the more likely it will peel off the vinyl. Most paints have a little icon on them indicating the level of translucency.

If you're using markers, make sure you use a good alcohol based marker. Try to stay away from sharpies!
The vinyl takes pencil nicely so it's easy to mark off areas ahead of time.

Ah, now this is a great thing about these figures! Vinyl's melting point is around 300 degrees, but since Sculpy bakes at a lower temp, you can indeed just throw the whole thing in the oven! Now, sculpy recommends baking at 275° f for 15 mins per quarter inch- I baked this one at 225° for 20 mins , just to be on the safe side, and he turned out just fine.

I've also hear of people using epoxy putty (like that mighty putty stuff) which can just air dry but I haven't tried it.

I would also recommend using the sculpy III over the super sculpy because it's a more firm and easy to carve into, plus I think it's better to match the color of the sculpting medium to the base, so when you paint over it you'll have greater consistency between sculpted and non sculpted areas.

I'd really like to see your munny! Post it please?

Wow! That is really cool. I didn't know you could make the parts for munny... Wow! That's so cool!!!! I like the way the darkened spots are on the face, and the wooden texture on the body. It's beautiful. smile

My Spanish teacher asked me to decorate her fiance's munny, but I haven't started yet. Haha. I don't think it'll be anything as good as that... But it was good to see great examples of it.

I'll take a picture of her and submit it. I still got to make the ears and the horn. She's suppost to be my celestial half unicorn. ^^ I got some epoxy and let me tell you its worth the money! I use it on my table top miniatures like Reaper and Warhammer.

I think your munny turned out very very well smile

Great tip about baking the sculpey on the vinyl. I didn't know we could do that. I shall try.

I used Van Gogh brand acrylic paint, except for the orange which I mixed from a cheapy brand of acrylic called Studio 71 (I think). I actually didn't glaze it, but th finish on the cheap paint has a nice sheen to it that I felt looked fairly close to a natural pumpkin skin.
Thank you for your kind compliments ^_^
