Sorry if this isn't the proper guild for this forum. It invoves Riza and Roy if you have anything to say about him. I guess it's alright.
People say that Liza is wrong for Hawkeye's name. It's not exactly wrong.
In Japanese L's and R's sound very similar. Like Sango's cat demon in Inuyasha. Kirara is the way it is spelled but we Pronounce it Kilala. Same with Riza/Liza. Except in the American anime when we see her and her name pops up onto the screen it says Liza. I use the name Liza in my fanfics because I always screw up and type Roy instead.
The whole rank thing confuses me. In fanfics they all refer to her as Lieutenant. Liza was a major at the beginnning of the series. She gets promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. She'd not just a lieutenant. She's one rank behind Mustang and the same rank as Hughes *oops spoiler Highlight Until he dies Please respond.
UPDATE!! THEY FINALLY CHANGED IT I'M NOT CONFUSED ANYMORE!!!

All the Japanese official art says "Riza". However, Roy calls her "Elizabeth" when they're undercover in manga chapter 37. Just make up your own mind on the issue. Personally I use Riza.
Err... no. If you're referring to the dub, then it is WRONG.
Riza is a 2nd Lieutenant in the 'Flashback' to when Ed and Al meet Nina. Roy was a Lieutenant Colonel and I have no clue what Hughes was at that time, sorry.
When they go back to the present time, Riza is a 1st Lieutenant. Roy is a Colonel, and gets promoted to Brigadier General in the last few eps of the anime. SPOILERS HIGHLIGHT:Hughes was a Lieutenant colonel and then got promoted 2 ranks to Brigadier General after Envy killed him. Roy actually commented that Hughes swore to stay under him, and now he's a rank above him.

No. All of the official stuff says, in English letters, "Riza". the subtitles on my DVD say "Riza". I believe it is Riza, because even taking the manga thing into account... they were undercover, and they even gave Havoc and Fuery girl's names. It was just a name that sounded similar to hers for easy reference but was not the same in order to keep them safe.

I meant that I like the Japanese version better. I use Liza in fanfiction because I sometimes write Roy by mistake. I like the name Riza better. 3nodding

I thought it was Riza in the dub too? It's Riza in the American release of the manga as well, isn't it?

In the amwerican version when they first show her, her name pops on the screen. It says Major Liza Hawkeye. I got the dub thing all wrong. Just go back and look at the translated episode where ed in on the train.

Actually, it really IS Riza Hawkeye and not Liza because that's how Hiromu Arakawa, the author of Fullmetal Alchemist, spells it in her books (Perfect Guide 1 and 2, Book and Figure Blue). Her name is spelled out in english. Think about it, if they applied that L to R thing, then Winry can also be called Winly.
Hawkeye's rank starts as second lieutenant both in manga and anime and is currently promoted to first lieutenant -- not lieutenant colonel.
the dub is SO wrong... actually, Edward Elric's rank is already Major and is one rank higher than Riza since he's a state alchemist. i hate the dubbed version...

Calling her 'Sir' is just a mark of respect. When my cousin was in army training they called the major that trained them "Sir", even tho she was female.

It should be Riza. I take Japanese, and they're written as r's, but pronounced more like a mix of an l or d...

The american version finally got the ranks right! Yay!
They finally have Liza as a First Lieutenant. I wish that they had gotten the labels right in the 1st place. Thank god I'm not confused any more.
