"Necromancy"

From the Greek "necro-", dead, and "mancy", divination. Divination via the dead.

What is meant by "the dead" I am unsure. As far as I can tell, most dead people seem pretty clueless on the subject of the future. Possibly it might mean using corpses for divination. I think divination with bones is called ossomancy or similar, and divination via human innards is anthropomancy or something.

*shrug*

You're way better off with cartomancy, or casting the Runes, or with another method that calls to you.

That's not really divination, so that wouldn't be necromancy. Talking to the dead =/= necromancy.

I believe San-Chan means, to communicate with the dead for divination purposes.
For your purposes, to learn things that are no longer written among the pages of our time, you may consider ceremonial magic with a "demon" who specializes in that sort of thing. However, many find that ceremonial magic is too much for the wiccan mind, so many don't dabble, although some traditions do.

Actually, I wouldn't say that, Setzer, seeing as much of Wicca is largely derived from Ceremonial Magick. LBRP and everything - just "guardians" rather than archangels.

However, I wouldn't recommend summoning a demon. Ever. No matter what you are, how good you are, or how long you've been doing it. If nothing else, it's highly disrespectful. (How do you feel when someone phones when you're in the bath? Now imagine if they didn't just call you, but yoinked you out of the bath and summoned you before them in order to answer their pathetic little questions.)

But yeah, the wording of "necromancy" is really ambiguous. It's not talking to the dead itself. As Setzer said, it's specifically divination. But the term doesn't include reference to speaking to the dead, just "dead". So how it works is, really, anyone's guess. Divination by watching a person die? *shrug* Divination via speaking with the dead is probably the most realistic, and it suits our purposes well enough.

But the same things apply. Why call someone to ask about your future? It's not particularly polite. I mean, if it's family, that's different. Otherwise, most of the dead neither know nor care about your future.

I mean the word demon, not as a thing from hell, but as a loose term that's been used forever to name things that today we often refer to as spirits and the like. Anyways, I think it's just as accurate as casting runes or throwing down some tarot cards to look into the future. Perhaps even skrying. One old tradition I know of, is when it is raining, and there are no clouds, many people will walk outside with a mirror to their chest. Looking into the past however, prolly isn't necessary, despite how many of us want too. If we could look into the past, there wouldn't be any arguing over validities.

hey I'm back and i was looking into necromancy as a way to learn about the soul in example a witch from before the burning days or someone of the like in order to learn what was lost in those dark times
