Alrighty then, 'Ello everybody!

So, my main point in posting this is I really wanna know if everyone else has the same problem that I have or if my guard is just really slow/unorganized. It seems that we never actually get started on some good, solid routine until the middle of the season. We end up at right shoulder or cross-port for good portions of our show and our band director almost never gives us any time to work on routine or work as an individual group. Then, at our guard sectionals, where we DO get time to work together, our captains are (though I love them for all the stress they put up with) almost clueless and our guard director sometimes doesn't even make an appearance. Anyone else have this problem?!

**raises hand** We do! We're doing at least 3 songs week after next, and we've only got equipment work for 1 1/2.. 'Tis not very cool.. And we've got the first competition in 3 weeks!

we had that issue last season because our choreographer didnt know he had to teach us the entire show the first week of our 3 week camp. we learned four of the 6 songs during that 1st week, didnt learn the last song til sometime in september and the other song, he said we could "free style" which sucks when its your first season and you dont know what to do! scream

my coach used to be our choreographer a couple years ago and the show was awesome because she had all summer to write it.

she found out this year, after my BD fired our other choreographer for being too slow, that she had to write the entire show on the 3rd day of guard camp. i heart her for doing so! she taught us at least 3/4 of a song a day, and wrote the ends when we got out on the field with the band so she knew how it would sound! we're all amazed at how she can write one each day, while it takes some people a week just to write their captain routine....

Haha actually this year our school set a new record. The band and colorguard both learned all the routiene for all of the songs before school started.

Your problems are enviable. Our band director from last year quit. Last year we didn't march, and the guard was the only organized part of the band. Our instructor was a dance teacher, and she made us wear really bad makeup. Yeah, hooker red lipstick and bright blue eyeshadow up to our eyebrows. We looked like clowns! We just did our routines on the track, and we only had four routines the whole year (one of those was recycled).

This year, our band director was hired last minute. We didn't have time for a band camp before school started, just a few evening practices. There are only four guard. We couldn't even start a routine, because the band couldn't play the song it was supposed to be for. But, we improvised. We do the song Brick House, so we made brick flags the first week of camp. We got red fabric, sewed metal washers to it for weights (major ouch if you get hit, and a nasty bruise sweatdrop but fun), painted a brick pattern on it with fabric paint, added some handles and whoila, new equipment! We wear this around our waists the first few measures, and groove. Then we take them off and do stuff with them. We made up our routine to a radio recording of the song, so we had to adapt it two weeks ago when the band finally could play the song. We also have had to change it every practice because the band speeds up or slows down on a regular basis. Our instructor is our band director's wife, who was never a colorguard herself. But it is awesome, and fun. We were on the field this week, next week is homecoming, and we hope to have a whole show complete with movement by the week after.

yeah... only mine goes like this;
i'm the guard captain, and my guard won't listen to me even though we only have our instructor for one week a year. So I'm the only one who masters the show, but i have to edit the routine so many times to help the other girls cope that it ends up as a lot of boring dropspins and butterflies. then i get yelled at for doing the original routine at competitions as a solo. mrgreen
