I've had some people who when I have told them I was home schooled thought I was rich. I am completely the opposite. biggrin Why do people think this way? And have you ever had this problem?

I use to get the same responce from most people but nothing could be further from the truth in my case.
Some states require a certified curricullum if your going to teach your kids at home. We were lucky in that the state we live in doesn't require parents to stick to a state accepted curricullum.
My husband and I, while we homeschooled three of our kids, made just a couple of dollars over minimum wage. When you consider bills into that and trying to keep a car going, buying books for homeschooling would have been impossible.
My husband and I homeschooled our kids off of a curricullum we came up with. Since our kids were not interested in going to college all they had to geared for was tech school. So we got them ready for that and all of them have their GED. One is starting tech school this year and the other one is appraising with my husband now and intends to get trained in computer repair on the side.
Except my daughter. She's handicapped and we have to take a different route for her. She'll be learning for years to come.
If you consider that alot of certified and state approved curricullums are expensive and alot of people can't afford even the cheepest ones, I guess in their eyes homeschoolers are rich. Guess they can't see that in alot of cases parents just may be that good with money.

its probably because school costs a lot of money. they probably also think someone stays home with you so they must think you are well off to be able to afford one parent working.

lol I don't think I've ever had someone think that about me. Or if they did, they never said it. My family is fairly poor. I'm home schooled for several reasons, including that we don't like what the public schools teach, I'm anti-social, it's easier and takes less time homeschooling than in public school where you have home work too, we don't like the anti-christian theme that some schools have, I don't like all the cussing etc, and my mom is afraid of the school shootings too. None of that has anything to do with being rich.

And hi everyone. Sorry I didn't post for a while after I joined. I've been really busy. >_<

I've had plenty people come up to me and ask if my family is a really rich & powerful family because I'm educated at home, which makes me chuckle each time I think about it, because as far as I know, we've not had to pay any money for Home-education.

I've had many people ask me if I was from a powerful family because I was homeschooled. Fact of the matter is, I tried normal school and it didn't work for me. Besides, homeschool's much more fun. 3nodding

I agree with you. Being educated from School is definitely much more fun, plus you don't have many distractions as you would if you were in School.

In this day and age, many families find themselves unable to get by on just one income.

Admittedly, there is more 'wiggle room' than people like to admit. Many people could get by on less if they were willing to scale back their lifestyles--shop at thrift stores or Goodwill, go out to dinner less, cancel the cable and internet.

But even with those adjustments, many people still couldn't afford to do without both incomes.

So those of us who do manage to homeschool are, at the very least, very lucky.

especially with layoffs and all. we were doing fine until Adrian lost his job. then he found a job that pays 100 less a week. so we are screwed and I have to find a job and day care if we want to keep our home. when people live hand to mouth they can't phantom ideas they didn't grow up with.

I agree with the comment that it's because people assume you have one parent staying home with you. When I tell people I was home-schooled, they usually ask if my mom stayed home with me and taught me. However, the people I know who are home-schooled and have only one working parent, they aren't rich either, so I still think it's a weird thing to assume. Now if you were talking about your "tutors", I'd understand them thinking you were rich.

I think you can get tutors for free from the school district. I'm not sure on that.
