RP Contest Entries The Betrayer . o O ( Theme songs for "The Betrayer": Wars of the Last Wolves --Rurouni Kenshin [Meiji Kenkaku Romantan; OAV Soundtrack] and Shuurai ~Rensa --Ryou Kunihiko [Juuni Kokki/Twelve Kingdoms Soundtrack]
At this point, The Betrayer is nameless, but I have...about half a dozen possible names for her, just in case. )"Shei'dalin...I need you and Teles to come with me." Arashi's voice, while desolate, was resolute. She was standing in the shop, amidst the others, and looked at the beautiful Goddess before her. Her heart was heavy as her amethyst eyes looked over the patrons of the shop, some interested and even eager, others shouting in anger.
"Shei...we need to leave. Soon. Before anyone else does. We've got to be quick, quiet, and careful. Nobody should get hurt because they see this as an adventure, some blasphemous 'challenge' or sport hunt. Because they will get hurt. Those people who....who are blind to the danger will be the ones that will be hurt by her."
The Goddess dipped her head, well-aware of the pain and anxiety that rolled off her Guardian in waves, and gently nosed her before turning and walking out the door. She would go fetch Teles for Arashi, leaving her to gather what she needed.
And gather Arashi did. By the time Shei was back with Teles upon her back, Arashi had skulked through the kitchen, letting Mameha know in no uncertain terms that she had to get to the Demonic Fox that was upon the wanted poster.
"Someone is bound to be hurt with the way they're talking about it. They're either blinded by the thrill or so angry they can't think straight, let alone see..." She mouthed the words again, a bundle of thick nylon rope slung around her shoulders, another stuffed into the pack upon her back. She was wearing comfortable, but closely-fitting clothes, and shoes that were undoubtedly an asset in the forest. Mameha, the understanding soul she was, let her borrow the nylon length of rope, and she'd also asked for an unheard of favour. Arashi knew some of the kits within the shop...had some more animalistic needs, at some points. So, tucked safely between her jacket and body was a medical packet of blood.
Teles perked her ears and shifted on Shei'dalin's back. They seemed to share the same thoughts in the look they gave each other, for Shei'dalin nodded.
"Yes, Teles. We're being watched, but not by...her. It's the Goddess's Advisor. He knows what we're doing, and he's chosen us to watch over personally, because of that."
Arashi looked at both of them, confused a moment. The Goddess's Advisor? Well, she supposed she would have her answers soon enough. With a small smile to Teles, she crept gently upon the Goddess's back and clung tight as Shei broke into a fast sprint as soon as she was settled. And then...they were airborne.
||| ~~~ ~~~ ~~~ |||
The flight over the forest was short, and eerily silent. True, Arashi conversed quietly with her foxes, but there were no sounds from the forest below, not even a squawk of a startled bird at their passing. It was as if the whole forest held its breath, to avoid being detected by the malevolent presence that haunted the region. They had discussed their plan over the past week, but hadn't been willing to put it into action just yet...and already, quite a few that went looking over the last few days hadn't come back...or if they did, they were terrified and wounded.
Shei'dalin winced, suddenly, her wing-strokes faltering for one split second before she drove herself on, towards the location they'd planned on setting up their trap. The way she muttered under her breath made it obvious that at just that moment, she'd caught some very horrible emotion from down below, most likely the very one they were searching for.
They descended at the base of a cliff, the only way to assure themselves the Betrayer would come from the one direction, and no others. After Arashi climbed from Shei's back, a shudder rolled down her spine and the hairs on the back of her neck stood up. And just as suddenly as it came, a warm breeze wafted over them, gentle and calming. Was that the Advisor's work? Either way, it made them comfortable enough to work quickly. The rope was hurriedly withdrawn from her bag and shoulders, both Teles and Shei'dalin helping her to form the rope into a net, carefully concealing it by digging small trenches into the ground and covering it with the dirt that was left over, sturdy vines chosen to be tied upon the ends.
"Sometimes it is the most simple of traps that work the best..." Teles murmured, as she had when they were discussing their methods earlier in the week. They had the bait, the attractant, and the net. Arashi backed off into the trees, snugging herself beneath some bushes so Shei and Teles could mask her scent along the ground. Carefully, Arashi opened the packet of bleed and squirted a little from the hole onto Shei'dalin.
Teles, for her part, winced in disgust, but didn't say a word. Poor Shei trembled, disliking the scent entirely. The girl carefully tried to make the blood as thick as possible, especially along her front leg, then handed the packet to her foxes, who finished squirting what little remained in the pack around the clearing before giving the packet back to Arashi.
And then it happened. Shei'dalin screeched, making it sound as though she was in great pain. And she very well might have been, too, with the evil lurking nearby. Putting on a convincing show, she flopped and panted, her back to the sheer cliffs with the net several feet in front of her. Birds flew from their hiding places and skittered to new trees as Shei'dalin let out a wail. Teles and Arashi huddled in separate places; Arashi holding the vines, which draped down from the tree branches, and Teles waiting to spring into action if she was needed.
An eerie hush suddenly descended upon them, and all they could hear was Shei'dalin as she panted, eyes rolling in her head as she fought the emotions that battered at her with no mercy.
And slowly, cautiously, she appeared, taking in the sight of the wounded Goddess with keen, bright eyes. What better way to distract the Betrayer than with someone close to the Goddess? Someone that, if she died, the Goddess would feel responsible for?
"Do what ever you have to, Shei, to make it so she can't flee, if we're not so lucky that she steps into the net at first." She had told the Goddess, and knew without a doubt that Shei would indeed have to fight; the thought was confirmed a few scant seconds later as the dark demonic took to her wings with a loud snarl, diving at the seemingly helpless Goddess.
A loud snarl erupted from Shei's muzzle as she waited long enough for the Betrayer to reach her, and snapped at the female, jumping to her feet as she caught a wing and broke the delicate appendage with a crrrrch. The Betrayer howled and snarled her agony and outrage, snapping at Shei'dalin's leg. The Goddess yelped, battering the blood-red fox with her massive wings before pouncing to break her foreleg with a snap, flinging the surprisingly strong demonic to the ground with a violent shake of her head. Arashi, fearing the look in her Goddess's silver eyes, acted quickly and snapped up the vines, fairly diving out of the bush as soon as she secured it to a branch, standing in front of the struggling demonic within the net, hands out.
"Shei, get a grip. It's over. Please, Shei, you can regain control."
But she couldn't. She howled in rage and leaped..!
The gentle breeze from before twisted and flicked at the leaves.
Suddenly Shei was upon the ground, quaking as a dominant male postured over her, glaring down at her. He must have radiated calm, as Shei'dalin soon huffed a grateful sigh and relaxed with a whisper of thanks. Steady, the God backed off and let his fellow Goddess rise. Much calmer and in control once again, Shei'dalin trotted forwards warily, wincing as the demonic female hissed, spat, and tried to break free. With no alternative, Shei'dalin battered the net and the kit fell limp, unconscious. The white Goddess breathed a sigh of genuine relief, turning her eyes to the God.
"Thank you, Chatokkai." She bowed formally, wings extended.
A smile curved his lips as he bowed back. "You are most welcome, Shei'dalin. I do not know what to do with this one. It is obvious I cannot take her anywhere near the Goddess, or the heavens. That is just what she would want."
Arashi stepped forwards, thoughtful, with Teles peering at the God keenly from her shoulders. "Excuse me, Chatokkai..? I would like to propose a solution. If you and the Goddess would spread the word that the Betrayer has been captured, I think that my home would be a fair place for this kit to stay. Shei'dalin, after all, is an empath, and her sister can read the thoughts of others. It would be ideal, because we could track her if she ever tried to run from our protection and custody..."
Chatokkai's eyes clouded, as if he was conversing with some far-off entity. The great God nodded his head after his eyes cleared. "Yes. I shall have to watch you, however, because the Goddess does not want to leave anyone in danger. If you should want to ride upon Shei'dalin, I shall take the Betrayer and follow you home."
Arrangements made, they packed up and headed for Arashi's house.
The home that now included this...Betrayer. It would take a while to know her story, if ever they learned it.
||| ~~~ ~~~ ~~~ ||| Delirium was a strange thing. Even stranger when you were the one experiencing it.
But for the 'Betrayer', it was the most agonizing thing. She'd felt all this pain before, but was forced to relive it as - while she was unconscious - a vet reset her broken leg and wing.
She used to be the most beautiful thing. Definitely one of the most beautiful in the heavens above. She had been the Goddess of Butterflies, and the messenger for those below. Intelligent and innocent. That changed, one day. She was delivering a message to Mameha, and taking one for her Mistress, whom she loved dearly, as all Gods and Goddesses did. As she was making her way home, the most pained, ear-splitting shriek she ever heard wafted to her enhanced ears. Immediately, she swerved. It was, without a doubt, one of the Goddess's creatures that was emitting such pained cries, and she had to help. She was honour and duty-bound to do so.
What she came across astonished her. It was a fox, indeed, but he was mutilated; a mutant of his own kind. He hissed at her, baring his fangs and snapping. "Accursed Goddess-spawn!"
His yowl shocked her, and she raised her paws. "I did not come here to harm you..."
"Tch~ That's what they all say! And then they toss me out because of my differences. The Goddess herself tossed me out, too, so long ago!" He snorted and snarled. This shocked Aleisia - as had been her name - and she sat and asked to hear his story. He told her, only a portion of it. Every time she descended from the heavens, he told her more. She believed him, absolutely. How could one in such pain tell lies?
Each time she ascended, her demeanour changed. At first, she was wary of the Goddess, unsure. But as time passed, she grew ever-more curt and aloof. Finally the Goddess could stand the treatment no more, and while Aleisia slept and dreamed, she watched over her. For many nights she watched, unable to completely decipher the Goddess's muttered dreams. Until one night. The one night that changed everything.
"She's betrayed them~!" She cried in her sleep. "The Goddess, shall pay with her life, for all the lives she has wrecked!"
The Goddess and her Advisor shared a look. It was one of horror, disbelief, and outrage.
The next morning was a gathering. The Goddess had discussed things all night with Chatokkai, and they came to the conclusion that Aleisia must be banished. With that banishment, something far worse...
The Goddess started off sorrowfully, informing the gathered ones of Aleisia's impending betrayal. They rallied around her, supporting their Goddess absolutely, horrified at the thought their messenger could ever believe such a fox. Aleisia was summoned...and banished, but not before several hours of tortured screams rang over the heavens.
In her unconscious state, those screams erupted once again, high, keening wails.
She could remember it all so clearly.
The way her bones snapped and reformed as her body shrank; the way her glorious wings moulted within the space of mere minutes; the way her skin burned as her new wings formed; the way her horns tore through the skin of her head as they grew in; the way her fur changed from its pristine colours to that of dark blood. The scent of her blood, her screams of absolute agony and outrage, the words of the Goddess as she cursed her to this new form, and the final words that hurtled her from her home to the world below.
She was betrayed before she knew she consciously made the decision to rebel against the Goddess. And now, her existence was focused on revenge. The only markings that bespoke of her origins were the colouring around her eyes, the beautiful butterfly upon her shoulder, and the shimmering letters down her leg that shifted into many different languages, all saying the same thing: The Betrayer of the Will of the Heavens.
Aleisia faded in those few hours, replaced by a vengeful, sadistic 'Betrayer', absolute in her thoughts. Hell-bent on justice. And as fierce and deadly as any.
