I'm cosplaying as Axel this year; but my hair didn't grow out as fast as I'd hoped and barely reaches my shoulders. As a result, it will probably be about 2 inches shorter than it really should be in the back.
I really want this to look like the game here, so should I just deal with it or go out and buy and shape a wig?
(P.S. Any super-strong hair goo suggestions would be greatly appreciated.)

I'd say a wig... Wigs are magical. Especially if you get a high-quality one.
If you plan to get a wig, a good way to style it is to blow-dry the spikes in place when you first get the hair gel on. Get the maximum-strength stuff. :]

You could try hair extensions too.
I know they make them a little long, but you can always cut them.
I don't know how well they'd go about styling though. I never tried them confused

there are ways to make your hair grow faster... rubbing your head for one, eating more protien, doing minium damage to hair, no hair dye, don't brush your hair when it is wet, also getting more vitamens.
lastly there is a shampoo that should make you hair grow faster... i haven't tried it my self but it is called formual 37. hope that is helpful ^^

My friend purchased a red wig for her radical edward costume. It was a perfect Axel wig, she asked me to style it and I said "Are you sure? We should just buy you an orginization wig!" xd I cant remember the exact name but it was red polly girl or something along those lines if you want to google it. Sorry that's not really very helpful. I think wigs always look better, though!

Watch out with the wig, it will only look better if you can get the right colour. I advise you get a natural looking red one than a NEON-OMG-RED.
Look on youtube and cosplay.com for hair styling tips and ask people where they got their good wigs from.

I'd say use a wig. amphigory.com has a lot of really nice wigs with a good selection. I would definitely try and find a wig that has dark roots that change to a fiery red at the tips, or try and dye a red wig a little darker at the roots, to give the effect seen in the game.
A REALLY good product that I've found to make spikes is Got 2 Be Glued: Blasting Freeze Spray. I created a Roxas wig using just that. Dear god, that was the longest 24 hours of my life...seriously, I totaled up the time I spent working on it, and it came to 24 hours. @_@; That wig was a pain in the butt...
