Hey! Im going to write up my stuff I do here, hope you like it.
Today I made a Taru Black mage called Wendel on the Cait Sith server (cause that one was at the top). After running around a lot trying to figure out what to do, I found a nice guy who told me how to get xp and where to go to get it! so today I have been killing Mandragora's and bumblebees! I found someone who gave me a mission to go out and find some guy out at some ruins. So I did that quest! was hard killing the Goblins, but someone came along and one hit them so that made it easy! now I keep getting to lvl 6 and then dying and returning to lvl 5.. LOL!! but I got another mission! to charge some mana balls. Not sure what else to be doing. Suggest away!

yay good start^^ grats on getting to 5 smile Here's a list of all the quests in Windy - as you can see they're divided by by reputation levels, the more quests you do the more reputation you get the more quests become available smile Unfortunately quests don't give exp reward, but they do give items and some gil which you might want/need ... check them out^^ Also - did you find the AH? So you can update your armour and your spells. Also also, did you get told to use signet while fighting^^ ? windurst quests (wiki)

Today was very unusual I was running around looking for shops (because I didnt know there was an auction house) and I had just finished having my mana balls stolen by Ace machine thingies, when I came across a Hat shop! he gave me a quest to show everyone the hat (which I did) and now I have a purdy new hat! YAY! A stranger passing by said I should look for the BLM building to see if they need some help (as I may get nice stuff to wear from there too!!) everyone in my linkshell was jelous of my new hat.
I made a friend and we went and gave an offering to the birdie people! lucky they knew what to do because I got lost many times. >.> and no it wasn't because I got nosy and wanted to see everything.... Finally I am level 2 of something or other which means I can hand in crystals that drop. Now I just have to find out who to and stuff and things.... OH and I got to level 6 and im only 250xp from lvl 7
So far people have randomly traded new spells to me or they have dropped from monsters along the way. People are so nice to me! My linkshell told me about signets so I definately make sure I have that when I go outside. And Im still not sure what LOTS are.. or maybe how to get a bigger bag or some furniture to hold more items.
Thanks for the link Ruka biggrin the other ones you gave me were excellent! and have helped out a fair bit too. Im going back on later tonight if I can.
(can anyone explain how the auction house works?)

Yup here's the AH lowdown:
There are 4 separate auction houses in vanadiel (Windurst, Bastok, San d'Orian and Jeuno). Placing you items on one AH means people browsing the other ones cannot see them. The biggest of the 4 is Jeuno (you'll be going to Jeuno at about lvl20).
In Windurst you can find the AH on your map in Windurst Woods and Windurst Walls. Head up to a AH Counter and click on it and you'll see the following options: -Buy -Sell -Sales Status
The sales status will list up all the items you currently have up for sale (a maximum of 7). When items sell, the gil will be sent to your Delivery Box for you to collect from your moogle. Next time you visit the AH you need to "tick off" the sold items from this list before you can list more. items that do not sell within the time limit (3 RL days) will also be sent to your delivery box and will also need to be ticked off before you can list more items.
Buy is pretty self explanatory xD Navigate through the options to see what is for sale. Things you can equip are listed in yellow. Things that you are currently wearing are listed in green. There are numbers in brackets on the right hand side like this -> [2], which indicate how many there are in stock. If there aren't any then you can't buy one sad When you find something you want, click on it and there are more options (Bid, Sort and Price History). Use the Price History list to see how much the last 10 have sold for at that AH. Use this to decide how much you wish to bid for it. You cannot know how much people have listed the items for, but the first person to bid an equal or higher amount will obtain the item. Be careful that you don't bid too much. Its worth "testing" by bidding a lower price first to see if you get lucky smile
When selling you will be asked to select a list price: it will not be visible to people trying to bid. This is the minimum you are prepared to accept for your item. Its a good idea to check out the price history through the "buy" menu first to see what it is worth. If all the recent sales have been for 2,000g you might also like to list yours for 2,000g. Alternatively you might undercut the prices and perhaps list for 1,800g for a faster sale. If it is a popular item which is out of stock you might be able to increase the price to 2,200g.
tips if more than one item has been listed for the same price, the one with the least time remaining will sell first: Example: Bob lists an Onion Sword for 500g. The next day Billy lists an Onion Sword for 500g. Marie comes along and bids 500g for an Onion Sword. Bob's will sell because his was listed first.
It is also important to bear in mind that the item with the lowest list price will sell first Example: Bob lists 12 water crystals for 700g. Billy lists 12 water crystals for 500g. Marie comes along and bids 700g for 12 water crystals, Billy's will be sold because his is listed at a cheaper price.
What this means is that now the majority of players, particularly with fast-moving items like crystals, undercut by minimal amounts (i.e. 10gil) so theirs will sell faster. If the PH says that all items are selling for 2,000g its likely that people are actually listing for 1,901g. This is a pain in the arse but you get used to it razz If you items are not selling this might be why!

Thank you Ruka!
So last night I didn't get much time to play. When I logged in the first thing I did was run around the whole of windhurst trying to find some quests to do (hopefully to get rid of some of the items in my inventory) and I handed over all my crystals to the guard at the gate (it only free'd up 3 spaces because they stack, but space is precious atm!) After reading here about the AH I went and put up all the bronze items I had received from monsters and then went shopping at the armor shop and got a new robe and a new staff (+2hp +2mp) I did want to get a nice pole +1 from the AH but it was expensive. After doing that I went out into the grasslands and got level 7! wootmonkies!! biggrin one more level and I can get some more new clothes. I just wish I had more space in my inventory at the moment >.< or somewhere to put all this junk I might be needing for future quests! One quest I wanted to do asked for a bird feather and a 2 leaf mandagora top, well I had them both before I ditched the featers for some bag space crying so I couldn't finish that quest......
My linkshell are very nice. The linkshell owner comes to visit me to help me with things every now and again. He is an Elven person, they are mighty handsome!

As soon as I logged in today a friend stopped infront of me and traded me a new pearl for a linkshell crying now I am torn as to which ls I should be in. I know you can switch back and forth and all, but the 1st one is american people who are hardly ever on when im on, and the new one is UK peeps who are on when I am on, and are only a little higher lvl than me, rather than all quite higher than me. But my original ls was so kind and helpful. I wish you could have more than one ls at a time...
Anyway, I got frustrated and sold heaps of stuff on the AH that I probarbly will need later on and handed in items for quests and then went out to splat more monsters. I got to lvl 9 tonight, which was ok.. but im still alone! still no one to group with.. Im told that will change at level 10.
Honestly I cant wait to pickup a new job (2nd job) and im considering switching to WHM to get that up a few levels before I do the quest to have a 2nd job active. Maybe that will help out with not having anyone around to help.

LSs are a dilemma we all face sad Its just testament to the close community nature of the game ^.^
Selling stuff on the AH is fine because at the end of the day you can always buy it back again, probably at a similar price smile
Ya it would be a good idea to level your intended subjob first so that you don't have to have tons of gear lying around the mog house
Example: At lvl 30 you wish to become a pld. The primary pld subjob is war. The primary war subjob at lower levels is monk. So for someone wanting to be a pld a good levelling plan would be: Monk to 18 -> *unlock subjobs* -> Warrior/Monk to 30 (or 37) -> *unlock paladin* -> Paladin/War to 75
Yeah the player base is mostly high level now, the majority of players have at least one 75 job - perhaps you should ask in your ls "does anyone have a job they want to duo with me lvl8-11ish?" to get some friends down to mess around with^^

The new LS im in is made up of new(ish) players and a couple of older players who left their old LS for some reason or other. I decided to keep both LS and I just switch depending on who is on when (since I seem to be the ONLY Aussie on at all - LOL!)
Anyway. This weekend I went out and about and got my little taru up to level 11. Then a friend in my LS contacted me and said we were going for a boat ride today. So we ran out to the scarey canyon, (which is scarey >.< I died there in a group once.. was a long run there and a another long run there after I died... crying ). But that wasn't the end of it!! we had to go through some barren lands and had to watch out for Gobo's! (Goblins) omg that was fun, dodge and weave amongst the stones. We were lucky until we got RIGHT outside of the town we were heading to and WHAM some gobo comes out of nowhere and nukes my ls friend! crying I ran to town asap, and she had to homepoint and walk all that way again! LOL! was horrible but im glad it wasnt me.
So anyway, when she finally got back to Mhaura, we went onto a big ship. I went to peek upstairs and there was some lvl 75's fishing up there! OMG phantoms and crabs everywhere!! I was scared of dying and having to go all that way again! lol! but we finally got back into port at... Selbina? I think thats the name, and we went out into the sandy dunes leaving footprints behind us. We found a nice group of people to work with (everyone was already experienced at FF by years, and us two by days and weeks! lol!) they were great! we had a white mage tagging along with us, I didnt understand till we got into a fight with a snipper. they were healing from the sidelines! is a good idea, but feels like im cheating... Well I got another level and a half out there before I had to go crying was so sad because I wanted to stay and get more levels! I did get a crab apron though! so apparently thats for the sub job quest or something. Im worried now that I wont be able to change jobs now and level up a sub job... Anyway, what sub job should I start leveling if I could?? everyone says WHM WHM! but is that the best? or should I do RDM or something else?

Yay welcome to valkrum! evil levelling hell of destruction and death lvls 10-20 biggrin You're actually closer to San d'Oria and Bastok now than Windurst so if you want to change jobs, level and lower level job or visit the AH at any point I strongly recommend you go to one of those cities instead of going ALL the way back ><. Set your home point to Selbina in the meantime^^ Goblins agro by sight so its good to be aware that you can run behind them pretty closely without agro but you can't run in front of them surprised Subjob quest you need 3 items: Crab Apron (drops from crabs - grats on getting that one!), Damselfly Worm (drops from Damselfly, not really rocket science this xD), and the tough one, Magicked Skull which drops off the Wights that spawn in the dunes only at nighttime. If you have a higher level friend to help you you can go and get the skull from Ghouls in Zerun Mines where there are more spawns. Of course you can only do the quest (which starts from a dude in Selbina) when you are lvl18+. Yeah white mage is a pretty stable subjob for black mage. In the future you may want to look at other options but for now that's probably best^^ /whm will give you a bigger mp boost than /rdm and give you access to a wider variety of cure spells earlier on. There's some information about the pros and cons particular subjobs in this thread -> http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/jobs.html?fjob=3&mid=108742636464330556&num=114I hope that during your time in Tahrongi Canyon near Windurst you were able to get the telepoint crystal Mea. Now seems like a good time for teleport summary biggrin Hopefully your LS has already explained to you but just in case: There are 3 main telepoints (mea in tahrongi canyon, dem in konstatch highlands, holla in la thiene plateau) plus 3 more lesser ones in areas that are too high level for you right now (altep, yhoat, vhazl). You need to visit each telepoint (they're situated at those huge white building things, there's 3 telepoints at each structure on different sides however only 1 (2?) of them will give the crystal, the other one is shattered). Once you get the crystal it will go into your key items are you're set for life. White Mages at lvl36 get spells called "Teleport-Mea" "Teleport-Dem" "Teleport-Holla". They cast these spells on themselves and they and any party members (who have the correct crystal) who are nearby are teleported to the appropriate place. Magic smile

TY Ruka n_n that helped out So I logged in at Selbina and waited for my friend to turn up again from windy... took her like an hour to do.. gonk anyways! when she got there, we found a party which I was really too low for (so they said) by 4 levels.. they all got to lvl 20 and then broke up the party, But we soon found another one! and went to the goblin camp. We ground away till we all got to 20. I had my worms and my apron, but still needed a skull. Then this guy running past asked if we needed any help with getting sub job items (LOL! just at the right time.) so we went for a run to some place with like a big crystal which is a Dia crystal? not sure. Anyway, I got it as a key item and was told there is one near windy to get as well. SO I will have to find that one later on. He also told me to do a quest in juno? to get bigger bags as soon as I could. He was nice biggrin was a Dragoon! wow looked cool. We couldnt get a skull (they kept dropping bone fragments) and I got really tired of staying up late so I went to bed. Anyway, when I got up the next day and after doing chores etc etc etc etc etc.. blah blah.. boring day stuff here.. He was still online! so we got together again and he got me a skull FIRST POP!! lol biggrin after all that time last night, Then he escorted me back to selbina where I got sub job! *cheers enthusiastically* well.. BACK to windy I go (cause I didn't know where these other cities were crying and stuff.. so I couldn't get to them...) took me like 1/2 hr to 3/4 hour to finally get back to windhurst where I changed my job to WHM/BLM! woohoo sub job FTW! Out I went and ground away to lvl 9... WHM I would like to grind my RDM as well because of different weapons and spells, but atm im happy with WHM. Im having trouble getting all the spells though.. The shops dont always sell all of them... maybe I need to get them in Selbina? or somewhere else? not sure.. also I have like about 4000 points with the guard at the gate that gives you that special spell.. I want to buy an emperor/empress band thing.. (whats better?) and also it says it can only be recharged once every so often?? what does that mean? and when? and how much? also, what do you think is the best/easiest craft/crafts to advance at this level in the game? I want to be an alchemist, but everyone goes pooh pooh at this idea.... but what do you suggest? P.S. Eiryn Fox we found a party which I was really too low for (so they said) by 4 levels generally pts should be 2 levels apart max. (i.e. 18-20, 13-15, 10-12) otherwise the people at the lower end of the levels get particularly gimped exp sad Quote: so we went for a run to some place with like a big crystal which is a Dia crystal? not sure. Anyway, I got it as a key item and was told there is one near windy to get as well. SO I will have to find that one later on. Yup that's the tele-crystals I was telling you about in my last post, (its Dem not Dia razz ) Quote: He also told me to do a quest in juno? to get bigger bags as soon as I could. Since you're level 20 you can now go to Jeuno and more importantly do the chocobo quest which lets you ride chocobos razz This will make your getting around much faster. There is a series of quests in Jeuno called "gobbie bag quests" and each one asks you to hand in 4 particular items in exchange for an additional 5 slots in your backpack. Unfortunately to get the quests there is a reasonably high fame/reputation requirement so its a good idea to work on quests in Windurst and the other two cities (bastok, sandy) to boost your Jeuno fame (Jeuno fame is in part calculated by your fame in each of the cities). Quote: BACK to windy I go (cause I didn't know where these other cities were crying and stuff.. so I couldn't get to them...) >< you forgot to use ffxi-atlas.com? Here's a break down of the routes from Selbina: To Sandy: Selbina -> Valkrum Dunes -> La Thiene Plateau -> West Ronfaure -> San d'Oria To Bastok: Selbina -> Valkrum Dunes -> Konstatch Highlands -> North Gustaberg -> South Gustaberg -> Bastok You won't have the maps for all these areas that's why I suggest using the website to help you find your way tip type the command to show automatically your current map reference (i.e. (G- cool ). this works even if you don't have the map. use it to find where you are while looking at the website maps.
Quote: Im having trouble getting all the spells though.. The shops dont always sell all of them... maybe I need to get them in Selbina? or somewhere else? not sure..
Not all spells can be bought at vendors. Many are only dropped by mobs. You can usually find these on the AH.
Guide to BLM spell locations: http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/jobs.html?fjob=3;mid=109881011829846649;num=71;page=1
Unfortunately there isn't a similar post for WHM spells but if you take the time to research on http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Main_Page you can find out everything you need to know.
Quote: also I have like about 4000 points with the guard at the gate that gives you that special spell.. I want to buy an emperor/empress band thing.. (whats better?) and also it says it can only be recharged once every so often?? what does that mean? and when? and how much?
The bands are fairly similar, but the long and short of it is this: Empress gives you several (7) weaker charges each week and is worthwhile if you pt and exp every day. Emperor only gives you 2 strong charges each week and is therefore better if you only party a few times a week.
Decide which is better for you.
To activate the ring you have to put it on, wait for the timer to set and then "use" it from your menu. Using it will give you the exp bonus (you can then unequip it without losing the bonus) but will use up a charge. If you run out of charges you can trade your band to a gate guard once a week and he will refill the charges for you at a small cost of CPs (conquest points). Its very much worth it.
Quote: what do you think is the best/easiest craft/crafts to advance at this level in the game? I want to be an alchemist, but everyone goes pooh pooh at this idea.... but what do you suggest?
None of the crafts in FFXI are profitable right now. This is because the game is very mature and in order to turn a good profit and compete with the people who have been playing for a long time you need your craft to be at 100. Trying to level that craft is generally a gil sinking nightmare because for the most part you will make a loss on every synth sad However some crafts are cheap and still worth doing, and if I were you I'd start out looking into levelling fishing and cooking.
Here is a post with links to every guide imaginable -> http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=24;mid=1115126760887739441;num=64;page=1 I suggest you look for ways to level cooking and fishing at the same time. Another important crafting resource is http://ffxiah.com recipe section which will help you decide what is good to craft at whatever level.

woot Ruka! your invaluable information is quite a help!!
I tend to be in groups more, even if its just with one other person (there is 3 of us about the same level in my main LS atm.. Of which I am trying to get them to join my other LS as well so we have a good team going later on in the game..) SO im thinking to go with the Empress bracelet (also after the maths, I realise that empress gives you more bonus for your bucks!...
Anyways, Last night we ran amok again in the canyon (where I got my 2nd tele crystal) just to get whoomped by some gobos! lol rolleyes those gobo's love to sneak up on us when we are healing... So we decided not to go quite so far into the canyon area.. I got to lvl 10 finally *WOOPDEDOO* in WHM. so now we can go to Sebelina to get me (and the DRK friend of mine) to 20 and then I can turn back to BLM/WHM (Im thinking I want to go RDM instead of WHM though because WHM is a pain in the posterior! ) But, for now it seems to be the suitable choice for where im heading.. (which just about changes every day xd lol) I found out how to synth grass thread as well and sat and did some synthing (cloth skills? and for those who dont know its umm.. wind crystal and then a yagudo bead... use the wind crystal and a trade like window comes up, then you put a beads in there and it makes 3 lots of grass thread!! WOOHOO!!) they sell for some monies on the AH which helps me buys spells n_n <3
I cant wait to get my chocobo licence, and also someone said about a girl you can give a flower to who shows you how to exit your mog house into any city?? is this true??

Eiryn Fox I cant wait to get my chocobo licence, and also someone said about a girl you can give a flower to who shows you how to exit your mog house into any city?? is this true?? Not quite. What the quest does it allow you to exit your mog house into any area in the city you are in. Say you upgrade your windy mog house then when you try and exit it will say "which area would you like to exit to? Woods/Waters/Port/Walls" You can find links to all the mog house exit upgrade quests here -> http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Mog_HouseThe little girls often want flowers and its worth noting that they can often be bought cheaper at vendors rather than on the ah (although I think you need to go to Jeuno to buy most of them). I also wonder if you have encountered the "warp tarus" in windurst yet. Not everyone knows about these little guys but they, combined with MH exit upgrades, make getting around Windy much easier. There's one in each zone and if you talk to him he will offer to warp you (for free) to the opposite side of windurst (walls <-> port, woods <-> waters).

ooh so we have to do the mog house upgrapes to talk to the warptarus? or we can talk to them straight up?? and where/who are they? links? (god knows I hate all that running about in windy dropping off quests, getting items mog house stuff etc etc etc... And do they have it in other cities too?? I didn't get to play last night sad so no stories to report. Except I read up lots about crafts lately. I found out that you can level all crafts to 60.. but then you get 20 master points to distribute after that, so you can master one (by putting all 20 in one skill) or distribute them however you wish over all your skills. And its easier to focus on one craft at a time rather than a lot of crafts because then you can get help from that guild with the harder items etc that you make to level up. and as you said, fishing and cooking are the ones to go with first, fishing cause its easy and cooking because the stuff you make is usefull (this is why I want to do alchemy.. but I will save that for 'chance' leveling rather than focusing on it directly atm) oh and do you know what this info is about??? Craft Stuff n thingsHave you ever raised a Chocobo? and have you ever grown plants in your mog house? do you have a picture of your mog house to share?? biggrin I keep looking at furniture on the AH n_n;;

Eiryn Fox ooh so we have to do the mog house upgrapes to talk to the warptarus? or we can talk to them straight up?? and where/who are they? links? Sorry I didn't explain clearly. The Mog House Exit Upgrades and the Warp Tarus are unrelated. You don't need one for the other. Windurst is the only city to have Warp Tarus, but there are Mog House upgrades for every city. The warp tarus are located at the following places: North Windurst Waters: G-8 (down the stairs near the water) Windurst Walls: J-11 (on top of the AH) Windurst Woods: K-12 (near the chocobo stables) Port Windurst: E-7 (on top of the Orastery) Quote: I found out that you can level all crafts to 60.. but then you get 20 master points to distribute after that, so you can master one (by putting all 20 in one skill) or distribute them however you wish over all your skills. Nearly right. There's actually 40 "master" skill points, enabling you to take one craft to 100 if you wish. Quote: And its easier to focus on one craft at a time rather than a lot of crafts because then you can get help from that guild with the harder items etc that you make to level up. Not too sure what you mean here. You can get "guild support" (which just raises your skill in that craft by a small amount for a limited period of time) from any guild that you currently belong to. You don't have to only stick with one craft for that. i.e. you can go to the cooking guild in windy, get the guild support effect, craft some orange juices, then go to bastok and the alchemy guild, get the guild support and make some beeswax. That's related to "guild points". When you reach novice rank in a craft you can take out a "contract" with any one guild (you can only have 1 contract at time, even though you can belong to several guides simultaneously). Each day the guild will request particular items which you then hand in in exchange for "guild points". When you have enough guild points you can exchange them for particular items and skills which will enhance your crafting capabilities. That website is to aid people to predict what items the guild will be asking for on a particular day. Quote: Have you ever raised a Chocobo? Nope. I know nothing about it sad Quote: have you ever grown plants in your mog house? do you have a picture of your mog house to share?? biggrin I keep looking at furniture on the AH n_n;; Yup I have a gardening mule which is a great source of income for doing very little work smile I'll post some pictures later on if you wish^^ My MH is very empty tho sad I haven't put much thought into decorating it xD There are some particularly fantastic items (aquariums!) which look just amazing in your house smile
