The sun had risen, but only just; the world was still bathed in the slightly golden-orange light of sunrise, and it filtered down through the trees beautifully. The white stallion who stood appreciating the morning smiled to himself and stretched out his leathery wings to loosen the muscles that had become stiff overnight. Here, under the vine draped boughs of Yisi, the sun would not grown strong enough to burn him even in the hottest parts of the day. Food and water was plentiful, he had a beautiful, loving mate and four wonderful children. In short, right at that moment, life was perfect.
Smiling softly to himself, the albino lowered his head to crop at a patch of soft, sweet blue flowers and set his mind to wandering. The direction it wandered in this morning was the same direction it had wandered for some time now; it considered the land just to the north, and the herd that inhabited it. Was what it had to offer worth giving up being completely his own master, answering only to himself and his family? Was it worth calling some Nequus his superiors? He wasn’t sure, still wasn’t sure, but it wasn’t concerning him too much this morning. The day was too wonderful, too beautiful to worry; either he would decide today, or he would decide another day.
Perhaps, the blue-eyed Reya considered as he took a pace forward and grazed on, it was worth brining it up with Eira and finding out what she thought. He planned, of course, to make the final decision with her, and probably in fact to go with whatever she preferred, but he had intended to have a solid idea of what he wanted first.
Maybe that wasn’t necessary, maybe he didn’t need to be sure. Maybe she would help him be sure. Morthan smiled a little wider to himself and chuckled softly; Eira always did make him more sure of things, perhaps he’d worried about this long enough by himself. Time to bring it up with the beautiful, wonderful mare he shared his life with and to see what inspiration she would bring to him.

Eira stirred as the soft, new light began to take over the area. She moved, her wings, large and elegant as was typical for her breed, stretched out before her eyes even opened. She curled up a bit tighter before her body relaxed and she lifted her head slowly, eyes opening to the sight of her mate.
Yes, her mate. Her loveing...well better stop before she got into rambling. She smiled at him and coudln't help the yawn that came out. "excuse me." she said as she shook her head a little to clear the sleep. "Good morning, Morthan." she said softly. "Sleep well?"

Morthan yawned in sympathy with his mate, grinning at her once he managed to get his jaw under control again. “Yes thank you, I did,” he said with a nod, stretching his wings again and giving himself a thorough shake. “You?” he quizzed with a smile and a tilt of his head. By the looks of her she had, but it was always better to ask in his opinion and besides, he wasn’t quite sure as of yet how to broach the subject of the handrakai just to the north of them.
Perhaps it was a bit belated to think of it now the children were all grown, but he supposed one was never too old to find a place where one was accepted. If Eira thought it sounded like a good idea, they could bring it up with their brood; ready to fly the metaphorical nest though the were they might decide that it was a good idea to accompany their parents to the Hellene territories in any case.
They could be perfectly autonomous once they got there if they wished, they could probably leave and wander the world but come back when they felt the need of a safe place to be. Though his son would be safe from the crossbreed stigma so long as he kept his mouth shut on his parentage, the three girls were not fortunate enough to look like purebloods. They would almost certainly benefit from the protection of the warrior herd, but whether or not they would want that protection was of course another matter entirely.

Eira smiled and nodded. "Of course." She said. Lifting herself into a standing position she shook away the last bits of sleep before eyeing her mate. Now, on a typical day the mare was known to be a bit oblivious from time to time. She wasn't the sharpest of tacks, though she belived herself to be sharper them most. Watching her mate today, however, she got an odd feeling from him. The kind of feeling when you know there is somthing going on. But this time she didn't know there was anything.
Moving to his side she looked at the stallion. "Morthan, whats the matter?" She asked. It wasn't the perfect way to ask, for he didn't seem upset. However it would do. Somthng was bothering him to some degree and she was going to find out what it was. "what are you thinking about?" She nuzzled him softly and waited for his reply.

The pale-coated Reya sighed happily and nuzzled back. “Nothing’s the matter, but you’re right, I am thinking for once.” Chuckling and smiling softly, Morthan turned his pale eyes to the north and twitched his tails thoughtfully. “I had heard of a herd that lives north of here,” he said eventually, turning back to his mate with a nod. “They are known as the Hellenes, and by and large they are warriors, but that isn’t what interests me. What interests me is their attitude to mixed breeds."
The albino paused to scratch his neck with a wing-claw to organise his thoughts before turning his attnetion abck to Eira. "I’d vaguely heard of them before," he said with a nod, "but a chap I spoke to a couple of days ago told me more. It seems that they don’t have the usual prejudice against crossbreeds; they like them as well as they like pures and I was wondering if... well if perhaps we ought to join them. I know the children are pretty much adults now, but that doesn’t stop them coming with us and being a part of the herd if they so wish. I don’t know what, if any, entry requirements they have but... well, I think it’s worth finding out to let the girls have a place where they’re accepted.”
Cassius, of course, didn’t have that problem. He looked like Ichsa through and through, but perhaps he would come anyway for the sake of being with his family though Gods knew the lad liked his adventures.
“So,” the blue-eyed Reya smiled at his mate and shrugged his wings, “what do you think? I know it’s a bit sudden, but to me at least it feels like a good plan.” It would be worth having somebody he had to call a lord, he was sure of it.

Eira listened closely as he spoke. She held her tounge until he had finished, though she wanted to speak up right away. Stepping away from Morthan she moved around a bit. Sighing she stopped and looked at the stallion. "...No." He said softly. She looked down. "Morthan...I...I don't trust that. A herd who is happy with crossbreeds? Who knows who could be there...And adults or not our children could still be hurt. As well as you said, warriors? So they would ask you to fight? Your strong, no matter your diffrences. Who knows if they would force you to fight for them. And i could lose you. So easily. Besides the fact that..." she paused. "Morthan do you really want to live under sombody? I never pictured you following the orders of someone who saw themseves as better. I have not heard of this herd of crossbreed lovers, but...I can't trust that."
She turned, moving a bit farther away, looking skyward. "If you wish to go to them, then...Well i can't stop you. But know if you wish to go to them I will not follow...I cannot, love." This was not a conversation she wished to be having after just getting up. "It sounds too good. And anything that sweet sounding must have somthing horrible about it."

Morthan regarded his mate quietly for a moment or two before making a noise in the back of his throat and shaking his head. “No, I understand your reservations and I’m not going to go anywhere you wouldn’t. I don’t like the idea of having to answer to anyone, and I don’t know if they’d force me to fight for them or not. It was an idea, no more, it wasn’t something I desperately felt the need to do or anything.” Smiling softly, the pale-eyed Reya moved over to his mate and nuzzled at her neck. “I’d never go anywhere without you love.”
Perhaps, the albino considered, he had been too hasty in assuming all he’d been told was true. The stallion he’d spoken to had seemed trustworthy enough, but he couldn’t be sure of him, couldn’t even be sure if perhaps said stallion had been somehow duped by the warriors. It was a nice dream; to have a haven away from the world’s contempt for his family, but there was no guarantee it was true, and there was still the matter of having to answer to somebody. If the Hellenes were all they were said to be and Eira had been keen, well it would have been something he could live with but if she wasn’t fond of the idea then he had no incentive to give up his autonomy whatsoever.
“Do you think I should try to find out more about them?” the pale-coated Reya added after a moment with a thoughtful frown. “I could find out if what is said of them is true or not, maybe find out if they accept people as friends of their herd rather than members... I don’t know.” Despite the drawbacks, despite the uncertainty, the idea of a place where his daughters would be safe had a hold over his imagination.

"I'm sorry." She said softly. "I understand...it does sound so tempting. But Morthan as good as it sounds i just don't want to blindly accept it and end up alone or in more trouble." she sighed lightly.
The mare relaxed against the stallion. "Perhaps...i suppose we could go and meet some of their herd, see what they are like. Perhaps our daughters would like to stay with them. But i just don't like how perfect it sounds." She sighed softly. She felt horrible now. He must be upset with her at all...Or disapointed in her.
"Please...can i explain?" She asked softly, looking up at him.

Morthan smiled softly at the elegant mare and nodded. “Yes, I do see were you’re coming from; definitely better for one of both of us to scope things out before we commit or take the children along... And yes, do explain... whatever it is you feel the need to explain,” he said with a grin and another nudge to the Ichsa’s neck. He didn’t want her to feel worried or upset about this, so it was better to let her speak even if he didn’t feel she needed to explain anything at all.

"I've told you about when i was traveling, before i met you." She said softly. "I was always played a fool, many belived me to be the steryotypical mare of my breed. Love, i'll admit i'm not the smartest out there, but i try and think, and understand. And somthing this importent...i don't want to be the fool. And if it is true they are fighters then i am sure they would take you from me and i would end up the poor little stupid mare who lost her mate in battle. I can't bare that thought. Your the only one who has ever listened, understood. I love you to much to blindly throw away future for a possibility of safety...I am safe with you, our daughters, they are strong...and if need be we can protect them. Our son, as you said, could pass as a pure if he needed to..." She shook her head. "I just don't want to give up everything for somthing i already have."

Once again, Morthan took a few moments to think before nodding. “I understand that feeling, I can’t say it’s ever been an issue for me, people don’t tend to treat Reya stallions like fools, but I can see how it might well have been an issue for you...” The albino trailed off at this point, making a thoughtful noise at the back of his throat. “If we do find out more about then,” he said eventually, “and they want me, or any of us to be warriors then I for one am not interested; I fight to defend myself and my family; nothing else is worth it. Pride comes back, new territory can always be found, but you only have one life and risking it over stupid things like those is, well stupid.”
The blue-eyed stallion smiled down at his mate, wondering once again how in hell he’d ended up with her. “I wouldn’t ever risk leaving you alone unless I had absolutely no other choice,” he said softly. “For you, for the children, for my own safety if running isn’t a better option; I can’t think of any other reasons I’d fight.” He’d never been a fan of violence; occasionally it had been necessary, the time with the Ichsa brat, the time he and Eira had first met Naveen and a couple of other times too, but he’d never really felt the joy in battle others spoke of. He wasn’t cut out for life as a warrior, physically or mentally, and he was damn glad of that fact. Last thing he needed was a massive, violent male ego always grumbling away at the back of his mind.

"So we are on the same page." She smiled lightly. "Yes...I..." She smiled happily. "Lets find out more before we do anything rash." She rested against him, smiling lightly. "I love you. You know that, right?" She smiled softly. She still didn't like the thought of surrendering to a herd, but for now, she was appeased. She didn't know why she had been afried Morthan would run off and leave her alone. such weird thoughts.

The albino stallion smiled and draped a wing over his mate’s back. “Yes, we are in the same place,” he told her with a nuzzle, “and I do know you love me, and I love you too. Whatever we decided to do that won’t change; won’t ever change. You and our children will always be foremost in my concerns. Whatever makes all of you happiest I shall do my best to do.” She probably knew that as well as he knew she loved with, Morthan considered as he looked down into his mate’s dark eyes, but whether she knew it or not, it felt good to say it aloud. Her and their children; that was what mattered.
His elder daughters did too, of course, but they were all far away and had mates and probably sons by now (perhaps strong daughters to) to protect them. He didn’t need to worry about them anymore, though he had to admit he missed them. Maybe he’d run into one or more of them one of these days; life had been being pretty damn good to him of late, and the blue-eyed Reya saw no reason why this pattern shouldn’t continue. Maybe, just maybe, he’d had his share for drek in life and wouldn’t ave to face anything too unpleasant ever again. Still, even if he did he was sure it wouldn’t feel so bad with Eira beside him. With this in mind, the leather-winged Nequus gave a contented sigh and nuzzled his mate again.

She smiled softly. "that is good to hear." She closed her eyes a moment, reveling in the feeling of being close to her mate. Of feeling protected. "Speaking of our wonderful children, where have they all gone?" She looked around. Try as she might she couldn't remember where they said they were going. "Darling, i think being with you is accelerating the aging process." SHe teased lightly. "I'm already losing my memory."
She looked out of the shade they stood in, up to the sky. She sighed softly. Not the strongest of flyers, the mare still loved to fly. she looked to her mate. But she couldn't. The sun, which bathed the area, was dangerous to her love, as was the dark night. She snorted lightly, looking up. "so stupid." she muttered.

Morthan grinned at his mate. “Oh really? Well, that must be why I’m feeling younger by the day then; I do apologize my dear, we must work out how to share my oldness more fairly.” She had a point though; where were the children? Off gallivanting no doubt; they so often were, especially Cassius with his insatiable curiosity. Still, he wasn’t overly worried about them; he hadn’t seen or scented another Nequus for a couple of days now.
“Eh?” the blue-eyed stallion said after a moment as he drifted back to reality, “what’s so stupid m’love?”
