It is a strange epidemic around here with people not wearing helmets. There is a mandatory helmet law, but if you go to motorcycle drivers ed you don't have to abide by it anymore. So now the police don't enforce the rule at all.
Here I what I want to ask you. Do you wear a helmet when you ride? Do you agree with the Texas law that if you take a registered course in motorcycles then you can't get ticketed for not wearing a helmet anymore, why? If you don't wear a helmet, why?

In South Africa its law to wear a helmet all the time, even for scooters. Personally I wear a helmet every time I get onto a bike. Open face for summer, and when I just want to cruise, and full face for when I feel like riding like an idiot or its colder out. When I get a bigger bike then its going to be full face 24-7.
I'd have to say that riding a bike with out a helmet, or a jacket and boots for that matter is asking for something nasty to happen. Its not a matter of if you come off, its a matter of when you come off. I can see why some people don't bother with helmets, its easier to just jump on your bike and go, but when you do that, you're taking one hell of a risk with your life.
At the end of the day its your choice, but when you are flying though the air because someone didn't see you and turned out infront of you, you'll be wishing you had the best gear money could buy.
Dress for the crash, not for the ride.

i agree completely with super panda, riding without a helmet is just a disaster waiting to happen. both of my parents had scooters when they were younger, both had accidents. both were hurt, my dad still has the plate in his arm due to his unplanned flight over a mini. it could have been a hell of a lot worse if they hadn't have been wearing helmets

I used to race 750GSX-R's and from that I learned helmets matter. I always wear a full faced helmet when I go out to ride which is pretty much everyday because that's my main transportation. Not wearing a helmet is just stupid. And why would you not want to wear a helmet? They're so cool, at least mine is.

Well, in Minnesota the law is under 18 or on permit = helmet required, full endorsement = helmet encouraged. I see more riders with helmets than without.
Safety reasons aside, I'll always wear my full-face because I'm a bug magnet. I could be in the hottest, driest area and I'll still find the biggest bug and get it smack dab in the middle of my face shield. I'd rather not have those guys on my actual face, ow.

I rode this one time with my visor up, and I got really really freaked out, (this is a good time to point out how much I dislike insects) this bumble bee had flown into my helmet and got stuck between my face and the inside of the helmet, and man it wouldn't stop buzzing. Pulled over as quickly as I could, and I don't think I've ever pulled off my helmet faster.

I would say that it should be a matter of choice. I personally always wear my helmet (Arai Vector Web), partially because it is awesome looking, but mostly because I feel it would be retarded to ride without protection. However, in general I dislike laws that only serve to protect idiots from themselves. Put quite bluntly, I am a fan of Darwin, though in this day and age, it seems to be "Survival of the Smartest", rather then the fittest.

First off I alway ware my when ride. "can't find a better place to put it" I want to comment on some about the law here I live in Tennessee and they enforce it here and it is a requirement for the Bikers ed class here. But you do see a lot of older riders using unapproved helmets. I figure that to each person has the right to get their own self hurt as long as they don't endanger any one else.

Not only do they keep out bugs. when/if you go skidding down the highway at 65(or on a street at 25) they keep your face looking the same, where as the open face would not*if you get what i`m saying*

~ ~Your Worst nightmare! SxE~ Yeah, and if you're a track junkie like me and enjoy saying hello to grass and asphalt at 145 they're very nice little accessories to have.
I love Shoei. Never failed me before.

~SxE Rot Is~~ My riding isnt quite as brutal as that but
Hitting tree limbs at 35-55MPH isn't exactly fun.
Only had one *OH CRAP* moment and that was four weeks ago when i hit...uh not real sure, went over the handle bars after going WOT down the street and didnt slow down enough by the time i was at my turn. i was probably doing 45 or so, went up came down on the bars and went off did one roll in the air, three on the ground and slid a bit...ended up about 20' from my bike.
I didn't really "injure" myself (1 week of aching gut) Bent rim, bent rear break lever and a bent shock eek
And the funny thing is not once did i hit my head..Landed on my right arm
THANK GOD i wasnt on the street when i went off..though my feet where inches from the curb burning_eyes ~ ~Your Worst nightmare! SxE~

SxE~ I've never wrecked on the street when I was either racing, stunting, or just doing some spirited riding. The only crashes I've ever had were on the track, so I don't know if the street is worse or not but that sounds pretty bad if you weren't wearing full gear. I don't usually ride without full gear so I wouldn't know, but that sounds bad man. Glad you're ok.
