Obama does not support gay marriage because he believes that marriage is a cultural tradition tied to religion. But he does support civil unions, rights for homosexuals (such as visitation in hospitals), and he abhors homophobic behavior.

I have issues with his justification. Assuming marriage really is tied to religion (which I disagree with), what do you say to all the people whose religions don't discriminate? If we're a nation with freedom of religion, then what do you say to the Unitarians, Quakers, Episcopalians, Buddhists, Metropolitan Church goers, Pagans and other tolerant sorts who would be quite happy to marry same-sex couples in their congregations and may already have ceremonies to bless same-sex unions?

Is it just me or do most politicians froget that church and state were seperated for a reason? it's really quite annoying. but i think that something is better than nothing, i would rather have a civil union than nothing at all(although marriage is preferred). but if it were up to me, it wouldn't even be an issue on whether we can marry or not. people in other countries marry goats and are perfectly happy, why can't i marry a woman if i'm a woman?
