To make a statement, and introduce zero, as well as a new rebellion. It helped to get followers for zero, so the person who was ordering them to be slain was killed, giving elevens more of a will to join in the fight against Britannia.

2. he seemed releived that he was alive
3. his other family was distressed at his death.
4. he painted many beautiful paintings and his sister remarked on the gentle colors he used were like him heart

Well my guess for why he had to die was to progress Lelouch like it was his first time killing a guy up close and personal but as for other reasons, Clovis really didn't stand out too much, yeah he was glad that Lelouch was still alive but maybe he just said that so there was a chance he wouldn't get killed

Seriously though as it was said, it was mainly for the purpose of progressing Lelouch's character Ophelianime Lelouch is kind of a jerk mad Thats true and honestly to me I think he would be better off and be able to make clearer decisions if his mind wasn't so attached to Nunally, though I can understand why it is.
