On June 6, 1944, allied troops that comprised of men from the United States, British Isles, Canada, and ANZAC forces (Australia and New Zealand) stormed fives beaches in Normandy, France. Operation Overlord (it's codename) was one of the few successful aquatic invasions in history. Despite incredible odds, harsh conditions and fierce fighting, the allied troops won the day with numerous casualties, eventually going on to take back all of Europe. Today is the 64th anniversary of the D-Day landings. As far as I've seen, not much is being done to commemorate the bravery of the men who risked their lives and sometimes gave them up in order to stop the advancing Axis armies. So, if you're interested, I found some cool links for you guys: MSN/Slate pictures of the landing - These are some really nice pictures taken before, during, and after the initial invasion US Army D-Day site - Excellent pictures, details who was there and where they landed, as well as a video and recording of Eisenhower's speech. It also features some posters from the time. PBS' D-Day site - This one is done for a special they're playing, but they've got some great extras that are short and sweet in addition to nice little add-ins like copies of actual letters sent from troops.

Thanks for the links! I'll be pouring over them the rest of the day (after home-work, of course)

Yay! I'm glad that you'll get some use out of them (I have successfully used my history-finding skill! biggrin ). I find WWII to be a really fascinating subject and the landing itself is such an amazing thing. I'm a bit disappointed that I only saw MSN posing stuff, but yesterday (the 40th anniversary of RFK's assassination) stuff about him was front page everywhere.
