With the release of openSUSE 11.0 just around the corner its as good of time as any to highlight the new features of this up and coming release.

Quote:
The openSUSE Project is proud to announce the openSUSE 11.0 Release Candidate 1 (RC1). The good news is that we’re closing in on the final release of 11.0, but it’s not time to relax just yet. We’re getting really close, so we need all hands on deck to help test this release candidate. Since beta 3 we’ve fixed 578 bugs and resolved 1,118 bugs! Read on to see how you can help get 11.0 into top shape.

Some of the new features of this are:
  • The GNOME/KDE CDs are now live installable disks.
  • Package management with zypper is now faster and smarter (better dependences handling at half the time).
  • It is now possible to preform a "hot upgrade" upgrade your current version to a newer one via zypper using
    zypper dist-upgrade

So you can upgrade from openSUSE 11.0 RC 1 to openSUSE 11.0 GM, and later to openSUSE 11.1 with no CD/DVD installation disk needed.
  • Newer RPM now allows for compression with Lzma and not just with tar or bz2.

Distro reveiw:

One first impressions I was surprised to see the new QT4 YaST installer rather than the QT3 and GTK mixed YaST installer SUSE had sense 9.1. This new installer was not only prettier and easier on the eyes, but it was faster with the option to install most of your packages from a pre-built ISO image instead of installing everything from RPM this created a massive speed increase and they added an option to get rid of the second half of the installation process by letting YaST "auto configure" your system. Due to these major changes the installation and update process took ~1 hour. The installation DVD also gives the user the choice between GNOME 2.22, KDE 3.5.x, and KDE 4.X, and XFCE as the default desktop.

For being a .0 release the Novell and SUSE developers did an excellent job, this has lots of new features and innovations but still competing with 10.3 for speed. Also in the push for 3D desktops, which started with openSUSE 10.3, AIXGL is enable by default on support hardware, for hardware that is not supported by AIXGL, XGL is still present and can be easily configured. One new feature in 11.0 is the accidental X kill protection, now in 11.0 when a user presses Ctrl + Alt + Backspace instead if killing X they get a 2 second annoying beep in which they need to press Ctrl + Alt + Backspace again or X stays alive.
