As far as I know, this "crisis" called global warming consists of the average air temperature of the world going up 1.33 degrees Fahrenheit in the last hundred years.

Discuss:
- Global Warming
- How not-scary and wrong it is
or
- How scary and right it is

EDIT
Sorry for calling it stupid.

The mod in me is saying this: Just because you disagree with an opinion, doesn't mean it's stupid. Please refrain from calling any opinion stupid or acting as such, it's disrespectful. Thank you.

I personally, think the existance of global warming is obvious. It's not so much a matter of if it's happening, it's how much. That being said though, I think it's just part of the earth's cycle. Millions of years ago, almost the entire earth was tropical and extremely warm, and then we gradually declined into the ice age. I think the earth warming back up again is just a natural process the earth is undergoing.

The real question at hand is does the burning of fossil fuels and fluorochlorocarbons in the atmosphere effect it. Regardless, you can't deny that we've taken pretty crappy care of our planet in the past 100 years or so. So do I think it's had an effect on the enviornment? Yes. To tell you how significant, I'd have to do some more research, but I'd say it's pretty moderate. Enough to cause a notable effect anyway.

Yeah, Lethkhar. How insulted do you think we're going to be? If we're still posting in the same threads as you are after all this time, no one's going for your throat. *grin*

Anyway, on to my thoughts. I think that we, as humans, are awfully arrogant to believe that we can destroy an entire planet. AWFULLY arrogant. All this earth-saving nonsense isn't about saving the planet. It's about saving US. Sometimes I think that one day Earth might just shake us off like so many fleas and be done with us.

On a scientific level, the world getting warmer might be good for us. If we did indeed evolve from little one-celled organisms, then who's to say that this is our final form? What if global warming is simply the catalyst to our next stage of evolution? Or that of plants and animals around us?

On a religious level, don't we all remember the promise of hurricanes, volcanoes, earthquakes and wars right before the final battle? I mean, humans ARE crappy tenants. 'No God, that hole in the ceiling was there when we got here.' But maybe this is just one more thing that's adding to the crap that's coming. We might be witnesses to the ushering in of a new age. It's just that the age we're in now has to end with fire and destruction, much like that of Moses.

I watched a TV programme the other day that put forward an idea of what the world would be like if all the human beings vanished suddenly and what changes would happen as a result. It surprised me to see how quickly nature claimed back what civilisation we think is set in stone and permanent these days. While I do agree it would be difficult to destroy a whole planet by regular means (our own efforts, unaided by godly powers) due to the sheer force of nature, it possible that the very things we do have a larger impact on our environment than we as individuals can perceive within our relatively short lifetimes.

It could be good for some but not for others, if certain individuals are able to adapt and survive the global change in environment. Certain other individuals may not adapt and survive and it would take many generations of such adaptation and survival to produce the kinds of evolution you propose. I'm sure Lethkhar would agree here. Nevertheless, if evidence from the last ice age is worth anything, it shows how stubborn and versatile humans have been in the past. There's no reason why humanity doesn't stand as good a chance to survive as a species in a warmer climate as in a colder one.

As mean-spirited as I sound, I like the idea of a new age for the Earth. It's refreshing at least.

To be honest, I don't know a lick about global warming one way or the other. I hear everything from both sides and I don't know, and I don't care. I do my part by recycling and walking basically everywhere (the fact that I don't have a car probably has something to do with that last bit though confused ). All I know is that it is all kinds of hot here right now. Seriously, Virginia is like, the hottest state in the country right now. My dad checked the forecast for the week for different big cities and we're hotter than Texas and Key West and I think Nevada might be close in temperature, but omgwtf??? 106??? Seriously??? D:

I think I should stay out of it not because I'll offend somebody, but because I'll probably lose any shred of hope for humanity that I have...

Because, chances are that I'll make some sort of response with sources to show why Global Warming exists and why it poses such a threat to not only humanity but also to the majority of the world's environments. Then I'll go on to show why humans are largely responsible for it. He won't believe me despite the evidence, and I will despair in knowing that there are so many others just like him that humanity's probably going to die out in the next few hundred years.

But it's hard, because you have scientists on both sides with conflicting "evidence." Whose evidence is righter (I'm being purposely grammatically incorrect, btw)? D: But I mean, like I said, personally, I don't know either way, but I do what I can to alleviate even a tiny fraction of whatever could possibly have the potential to send us down in flaming non-glory. I do think that large groups and companies are trying to help fix the problem too, if only for the fact that oil is so expensive and that in turn makes gas incredibly expensive.

Well, actually, I personally believe that we have plenty of power to destroy this planet. And we're in the process of doing exactly that. We've introduced species to each other that should never have met, with some rather dire results. We've wiped out species from the face of the planet. We are steadily wiping rainforest and our population continues to grow, forcing us to encroach on MORE natural habitat just to provide housing for ourselves. We suck up natural resources like there's no tomorrow and I imagine even some of your renewable ones have troubles keeping up. As far as global warming, I haven't really been in a recent science class so I really don't have much of a handle on the current evidence for or against. But something tells me we have more potential for destruction than some seem to want to think. I just think that there are a lot of people out there who want to convince and be convinced that it's all an illusion because no one wants to make the neccesary sacrifices to fix the damage we've done. Or at least, as much of it as we still can. Let's face it, it would be a very costly and inconvenient endeavor.

Well, no, that's why it's so crazy. It's insane that June just started and we're already getting temperatures in the hundreds for prolonged periods of time. We got no real Spring- only Winter and then, hello, Summer! Weather like this doesn't usually come to Virginia until the end of July or beginning of August, and temperatures normally stay in the 90s. 106 isn't normal for us.
