In Belgium, St. Nicholas pays two visits to each house. On December 4 he comes to find out how each child has behaved. On the evening of December 6, he returns to leave presents for those who have been good, and he leaves switches for those who have been bad.

A 14-year-old student was expelled from a Christian school in Ontario, CA because her parents are lesbians.
The school Superintendent Leonard Stob wrote that school policy requires that at least one parent may not engage in practices "immoral or inconsistent with a positive Christian life style, such as cohabitating without marriage or in a homosexual relationship."
The girl and her parents said they won't fight the ruling. Of course, why would you want to go back to that school after an episode like that.
But the point of the story is...do you think the school has the right to expel a student on such a ground? If it were a publicly funded school it wouldn't even be a question. You could be a practicing homosexual Wiccan and the school would help you celebrate your diversity.
A privately funded school, however, can establish whatever guidelines they choose. Should a privately funded Christian school be allowed to exclude students on a moral basis?

--------- Bible to be redone in limericks -----------
EDINBURGH, Scotland - The Bible is being rewritten in limericks by an Anglican priest in Scotland. The new rhyming Bible will be published next month, the Scotsman reported Thursday. "I believe that all poetry -- that is pure, primitive or profound -- is a gift to us so that we may receive enjoyment, encouragement and a deeper experience of God," said Biblical poet Peter Wallis, who serves the West Sussex villages of Yapton, Ford and Clymping. Wallis will introduce his new limerick version of the Holy Book during the Christian Resources Exhibition, which opens Oct. 13 at the Royal Highland Centre.

------- Syrians shun Barbie for prayer-mat doll -----------
DAMASCUS, Syria - Syrian girls have abandoned Barbie dolls in favor of a homegrown, Muslim version that comes complete with Islamic clothing and a tiny pink prayer mat. The black-haired doll named Fulla is about the same size and build of Mattel's classic doll, but is boxed wearing a black abaya and matching head scarf, along with the mat. NewBoy Design Studio, based in Syria, introduced the doll in November 2003, and she has quickly become a best seller all over the region, The New York Times reports. In Damascus, a Fulla doll sells for about $16, in a country where average per capita income hovers around $100 per month. In corner shops in Syria, Egypt, Jordan and Qatar there is Fulla breakfast cereal or Fulla chewing gum, Fulla bicycles and girls wearing trademark "Fulla pink" clothing. However, Maan Abdul Salam, a Syrian women's rights advocate, said Fulla was emblematic of a trend toward Islamic conservatism sweeping the Middle East. "If this doll had come out 10 years ago, I don't think it would have been very popular," he said.
