A silent summer day. It is about noon now. The sky is clear and the sun is as hot as ever. You can even hear the crickets sing.
Kanki is laying under a tree in front of the school building where the Goddess Minty teaches.
"Peaceful..." He thought to himself and relaxed.

The weather was hotter than Serenity was used to, but she didn't mind it. She welcomed the relief from the storms that had been occurring back home for the past several weeks. She loved the silence here ... all too often, it was impossible to have any silence back home. Well, that tended to happen when one had ten siblings and more than twenty aunts and uncles, not to mention cousins and grandparents ... the list went on.
She had spent the past week renewing her art supplies, and only now was she making her way back to the world where they had been destroyed, making sure to avoid the beach, in order to paint her first picture with her new things.
She was passing by the school when she spotted a boy in a uniform lying beneath a tree. Curious ... shouldn't he be in school? At least, it looked that way to her ... but perhaps he had a day off. He was kind of cute, she mused, in a sibling-like sort of way. Perhaps he would let her draw him ...
"Excuse me," she called softly, stopping several feet away from him and holding clasping her hands in front of her. "My name is Serenity ... I was wondering ... are you busy?"

Kanki didnt even open his eyes to reply to the nearing girl.
"Mmmh... G'day..." he replied shortly. He had been disturbed, the peace was no more.
"If you mean that I should be at school with your question about my business, then I'd have to say..." He replied to the girl who had introduced herself as Serenity. Funny and an unusual name it was. He lazily opened his eyes to look at the girl. He then added with a sigh, "I am not...supposed...." His eyes flew open as he saw Serenity better.
"MOM!?" He exclaimed and almost stood up.

Serenity jumped at the boy's exclamation, and if her bag wasn't securely over her shoulder, hanging across her chest, she would have dropped it.
"I ... I ..." Her face grew red as she fumbled for a reply. Yet what was there to say? She didn't have any children! ... not that she knew about ...
"I'm not ... I'm Serenity," she stuttered finally. "I ... didn't ... wasn't ... asking about school ... just ..."
She took a deep breath and looked away, completely and utterly flustered now. Why was it always her? All she wanted was a subject for her painting! Why did it always lead her to such strange situations?!

Kanki stared at Serenity. He had been mistaken. His mother would never have acted like that. His mom, as a matter of fact, was a really weird person who found him so cute that she would not let him go!
"Um..." He muttered and then decided to go apologize to the girl. "It was a misunderstanding. My bad." he said bluntly and turned to leave. It was obvious he made her uncomfortable. He being as small as he was, was not as fast on his feet as he had expected, so leaving took a while.

Serenity blushed even deeper at his apology, and as he turned to walk away, she reached out one hand to call him back.
"Wait!" she called after him softly. "Don't ... don't go! I just ... wanted to ask you ..."
She bit her lip and followed slowly after him, then finished, "if ... if I could paint you ... lying there the way you were ... you just looked so peaceful ... and I haven't been able to paint anything in a while ..."
Her eyes were hopeful as she looked at him, but she was still blushing at her own audacity. how could she ask him after he had made it so clear that he wanted to leave?

" 'Wait' she said..." Kanki thought to himself. He looked back over his tiny shoulder... and had to turn his head to look upwards more. ouch.
"Peaceful? Indeed it was so..." he sighed. She wanted to paint him... There should have been better things to draw then him sleeping, he reasoned but she seemed serious enough. "Well.. ok. I'll 'pose' for you." he agreed and resentfully turned around to head back to his previous spot. He had to pass the tall girl. Great, he was feeling so 'big' right now.

Serenity's blush faded slightly as the boy turned to go back to where he had been lying, and she sat on the grass where she was so that she wouldn't bee too close to him.
"Thank you," she murmured softly, not seeing the look of anger on his face, busy taking her bag off her shoulder and setting it on the ground. "I promise I'll be quiet ... you won't even notice that I'm here."
She assumed he wanted quiet ... he didn't seem to be a very sociable boy at least.

Kanki couldn't help but to chuckle at her comment about being silent. She resembled someone who was the opposite of silent and that... well frankly, it was amusing.
He took a mp3 player out of his tartan bag and placed the earphones into his ears. Before hitting play, he thought it would be polite-ish to say something.
"Dont worry, be as loud as you want, I wont hear you." he said and pressed play. Loud j-rock sounded from the earphones, deafening to the owner of the ears they were in.

Serenity's eyes flickered up at the boy as she took her supplies out of her bag, but she bit her lip and said nothing. It seemed she had upset him ... well, there was nothing she could do about that. Not at the moment. Except to do what he had given her permission to do, and then leave him in his silence.
Silence. Not quite. His music was so loud that she could hear it from where she was sitting. Wasn't he going to damage his ears? ... she was tempted to say something, but she had already been mistaken for his mother, she didn't want him to make the comparison again, not when it would almost certainly be disdainful.
She took a large canvas out of her bag and set out her paints, also taking out a jar of water and several different sized brushes. Once everything was ready, she looked back at Kanki.
He was so cute ... sitting there like that ...
With that thought in the back of her mind, she opened a tube of paint and began her work.

Kanki felt the eyes on him and took one earphone out of his ear.
"Is it too loud? Should I put it off?" he asked, making sure the girl didnt have to feel unnecessarily uncomfortable near him.
He then realized that he had moved. "Oh, sorry, I moved, didn't I? I'll set myself back to my pose...." he added and tried to imitate the pose he had earlier.

Serenity's eyes flickered to the boy once more as he spoke to her, and she lowered her brush momentarily.
"Well ... if it's not too loud for you, it's fine for me," she told him softly. "I ... just don't ..."
She trailed off, and didn't bother to finish her sentence. It wasn't her place to worry about him, really ... and she didn't want to upset him again ... and she had no idea what might set him off. He seemed a bit touchy.
When he set himself back in his pose, she smiled faintly and raised her brush again. She didn't mind if he moved, she didn't need him to sit perfectly still ... of course it would help if he did, but well he was young and young children like that couldn't be expected to have the patience of an adult.
"You make an excellent subject," she volunteered softly, half afraid he was going to yell at her for making noise again.

Kanki decided it had been too loud after all. He shut the j-rock off and put on some cheerful j-pop instead. The player he had also had little speakers that he could plug in instead of the earphones and so he did. "I hope you don't mind this kind of music...." he said softly, sounding almost kind.
"Cheerful music like this always takes my mind to a happier place...." he admitted unwillingly. Kanki blushed. He had let his guard down.
The words 'excellent' and 'subject' rang in his ears. He had heard them before. Had he been drawn before? In a past life perhaps?
He dared a peek at the drawing girl. He hadn't noticed this until now, but she looked familiar. Not because of his mother, who apparently also resembled to someone from his past. He could not place his finger on what it was, but she made him feel calmer. Like he could be nice....

Serenity smiled up at Kanki softly, nodding her head slightly. "I've never heard it before," she admitted, "but it sounds good to me."
Her smile grew as she listened to him talking. It seemed he was growing more comfortable ... perhaps all he'd needed was some time to get used to her presence. She kept glancing up at him as she painted, her brush moving in quick, short strokes as she worked to capture his image.
"By the way," she murmured as she worked, "what is your name? You ... didn't say ..."
