Brash, curious, and naïve, the fledgling Shadestar had taken up a new hobby: bothering Gatherers. She had always been a rather social – and hungry – fledgling, and finally the sporadic attentions of her Minder had caused her to begin sneaking away, seeking attention elsewhere. It was her stomach that had driven out today, so her attention was elsewhere as she fluttered from tree to tree. This of course led to the inevitable result of Shadestar crashing face first into a tree trunk. With a pained, startled cheep! Shadestar tumbled through the air, landing hard on the lowermost branch.

“ Ow ow ow!” she moaned, keeping her face firmly planted on the tree branch, too embarrassed to sit up yet.

"Are you alright, dear?"

Twilla had not seen the crash, but the sound of the little one was certainly enough to catch her attention and witness the rather unfortunate spill to the lower limb.

Ah, fledglings.

She had to admit she was fond of them and the thought of settling down and having her own raised her spirits.

"That looked like a rather nasty bump." The gatherer landed silently on the branch beside her with her eartufts lifted high and a look of concern crossed her eyes and edges of her beak, which was curved downward. Food was scarce and her sack half empty. Tikki was skittering through the trees, along with Auze, searching for more food.

Shadestar’s tail – which was currently stuck up in the air – twitched upon hearing another Sentinel’s voice. Since it was impolite to speak with one’s beak full, she suspected it was also impolite to speak with one’s face pressed against a tree branch, and therefore she wiggled about until at last she was sitting on her bum, looking at the other Sentinel. Actually, to say Shadestar was staring would have been more accurate, and after of moment of staring she burst into broken, rapid speech.

“ Hi! I’m Shadestar! Your feathers are blue - that mean tree was in my way! - are you cold?”

Obviously Shadestar hadn’t quite mastered the idea of thinking before speaking. She had, in one breath, introduced herself, blamed the tree for her fall, and asked if the other Sentinel’s blue feathers meant she was cold. This left the little fledgling trying to catch her breath, staring at the Shadow type with large, round eyes.

The fledgling's sudden and rapid speech almost caught the gatherer off guard. She looked so nervous and suddenly turned out to be a chatterbox. So, she took each statement and question one strand at a time.

"My, you are a talkative one. My name is Twilla and it is nice to meet you, Shadestar!" She bobbed her head and gave the little one a grin. "Oh, you know, I saw that tree just jump out in the way. Not very nice of it, huh?" She opted to humor the funny little ghost fledgling.

"Mm, oh yes... My feathers have blue on them, but I'm not cold. It's dye!"

“ Oh yes, bad, bad tree!” Shadestar had also not learned to lie very well, or to be subtle, because as she said that her chest puffed out, proud that her hasty cover-up had prevented further embarrassment.

As it became clearer that that she wasn’t going to be teased for flying into a tree, she decided that this Twilla was nice, and thus her hasty speech patterns slowed down.

“ I like blue. There’s some yummy berries out there that are blue. And purple too; I don’t like the green ones – taste nasty – and the red ones are tricky – some make me sick!” After going through her knowledge of berries, her beak drooped in a frown as she added,” I want a mushroom. I already ate all the one’s by my Minder’s tree.”

The shadow gatherer leaned slightly closer, but at a respectable distance, though she doubted the little one knew much about said boundaries. "Berries and mushrooms, oh yes. I do gather those quite frequently... You sure do know alot! My, my, well the blue berries are quite tasty. I'm afraid I don't have any mushrooms right now, but I think I do have some berries."

The possibility of food had Shadestar’s ear tufts perking up in excitement. A berry was not a mushroom, certainly, but it was better then nothing.

“ You have berries? Can I have one?”

In a way, she felt oddly reluctant to ask for anything from the Gatherer because she had nothing to “share” in return. It also made her feel like a baby, admitting, in a way, that she couldn’t find enough food to feed herself. Perhaps Twilla could help with that too?

“ What can be eated other then berries and shrooms?”

"Just one, 'cos I still have to find food for the rest of th clan." With a bit of a tug with her will, Twilla selected a berry from out of her pack and placed it before the little ghost fledgling. "It's a tasty one." She explained cheerily.

"Now, shrooms and berries are always good, but sometimes you can get nuts, too. they are always tasty. The only problem is... You have to crack the shell open."

Shadestar took the offered berry happily, eartufts quivering in delight as she ate it. As she finished her treat, her head coked to the side, making it obvious that the inquisitive fledgling had thought of more questions.

“ Nuts? Them round, hard things? You can eat them?” she asked in a disbelieving voice. Her disbelief then changed into excitement.

“ You gonna go gatherin’ again? I can help! I fit in bushes good, get the hiding berries and shrooms and stuff. Can I come? Can I? Please?!”

"The ground is a dangerous place... Only sentinels who are old enough to be on their own and can fly well should go down... And even they sometimes end up a mass of bones and feathers. There are things down there that will eat you up in the blink of an eye! You've heard the stories of Mudbeak, haven't you?" The gatherer lectured, but in a friendly and concerned voice.

As she spoke, Tikki was rummaging through her pack and hastily withdrew a nut. The skurri made clear and obvious movements before the fledgling, showing as she cracked the shell open with her incisors to reveal the meat of the nut.

“ Well, I guess I don’t fly too well yet…” Shadestar trailed off, distracted by the skurri. She’d never seen one up close before; for some reason, the wild skurri-like critters always ran away from her. This one seemed nice enough though, especially since it had demonstrated how to crack open a nut. She bobbed her head gratefully in the skurri’s direction before remembering that there was more to what Twilla had said.

“ Who’s Mudbeak?”

{{ Oh, pretty glowing feather!

Edit: Yah, I forgot. My poor little brain has trouble remembering all the details of Noctua. x.x}}

"You haven't heard about Mudbeak at all?The gatherer looked slightly bothered by that... Maybe they were just waiting until Shadestar was a little older. She had heard a few different songs about Mudbeak from her parents and two that stuck in her mind concerned the Above and the Ground.

"Mudbeak was a pretty, pretty sentinel that thought she was brave and strong! She was foolish and went down to the Ground and she was never seen again!"

“ The story, it sounds familiar, but not the name. I not good with name, forget ‘em all the time.” Shadestar’s little body deflated as she said that. She was a big fledgling, almost an adult! Only little fledglings should forget names – or fly bad, for that matter.

{{ My brain's is running out of inspiration, so although this was a short Rp, perhaps we should wrap it up?}}
PostPosted: Mon Jun 30, 2008 9:14 pm

The shadow gatherer tilted her head to the side and observed the little ghost fledgling for a moment. The sheseemed slightly off... But still, all progressed at their own rate now and again. Maybe she was just a late flower who would bloom later on.

"Do you know what task you would like when you are older, little Shadestar?" She asked cheerily; ignoring the little fledgling's comment about names. Perhaps she would like to be a gatherer, too. She did show a little interest, after all.

OOC: We can end it whenever you like. :3
