hello my boyfriend is mildly bipolar and when he gets tired or hungry he gets upset really easily, i mean REALLY easily. and he's not nearly bad enough to put on actual mood stabilizers, so i was wondering if anyone knew any more mild mood stabilizers (other than marijuana) that he can just take sometimes when he's having a difficult moment.
i know the obvious choice is to get him something to eat or get him some rest but once he starts one of his "episodes" he doesnt want to do either he'll stay awake for days just playing video games purely because something bad happened.

well there is something that could help his bipolar disorder but it's currently illegal in most of the US. If medical cannabis is legal where you live then you should look into it, if not then I guess your out of luck. NORMLcheck out this site and see if your state has legalized it for medical use.

She did say other than marijuana.
Now, I'm bipolar too. XD So yes, there are things. If you're into being very -there- for him, (very) then you can encourage him to eat without interrupting him. During an up or a down, a bipolar person doesn't want to be disturbed from their current 'thing'. So you don't interrupt them, exactly. He's on a video game, he won't move away from it. Make the sandwich, put it with him, and -gently- encourage him to eat it. If it's bite sized, usually the person will start to eat it. Grapes, carrot sticks, whatever he likes that's finger-food. That will bring his blood sugar back up and fix the moody-brat feeling.
Talk to a doctor about a prescription for Valium in a very low dose, for extremely manic states.
Try St. John's Wort every day, as a mood stabilizer. It's not a 'oh, bad day, take this' medicine, it's an everyday one, but it's a fairly gentle one as well.
When he's locked into his games or his current 'thing', is he manic or depressed, can you tell? 'Up' or "down'?
