Quote:
Mark 10
Divorce
1Jesus then left that place and went into the region of Judea and across the Jordan. Again crowds of people came to him, and as was his custom, he taught them.
2Some Pharisees came and tested him by asking, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?"

3"What did Moses command you?" he replied.

4They said, "Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away."

5"It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law," Jesus replied. 6"But at the beginning of creation God 'made them male and female.'[a] 7'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, 8and the two will become one flesh.'[c] So they are no longer two, but one. 9Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate."

10When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this. 11He answered, "Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her. 12And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery."

Quote:
Matthew 19
Divorce
1When Jesus had finished saying these things, he left Galilee and went into the region of Judea to the other side of the Jordan. 2Large crowds followed him, and he healed them there.
3Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?"

4"Haven't you read," he replied, "that at the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female,'[a] 5and said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'? 6So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate."

7"Why then," they asked, "did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?"

8Jesus replied, "Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. 9I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery."

10The disciples said to him, "If this is the situation between a husband and wife, it is better not to marry."

11Jesus replied, "Not everyone can accept this word, but only those to whom it has been given. 12For some are eunuchs because they were born that way; others were made that way by men; and others have renounced marriage[c]because of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it."

In the first passage it sound as through if two people divorce for any reason including unfaithfulness is committing adultery. In the other it sounds as though if two people divorce for any reason except for unfaithfulness then they are committing adultery. Which is it?
Also how often are you committing adultery?

Adultery is committing lustful acts with anyone but your spouse.

And the act of divorce is not committing adultery. It is getting remarried (or having any lustful relationship) after getting divorced that is considered adultery.

So ... the Bible condemns getting remarried after divorce?

So ... the Bible condemns getting remarried after divorce?

According to the Law, if your ex-husband/ex-wife has died, you're permitted to remarry.

I recall Paul saying having something else to say about different marital states including divorce in 1 Corinthians 7.

I think the gist of it from Jesus was that God permitted divorce because some of us just weren't up to the task of living, sleeping, breathing and eating with that one person for the rest of our lives. The IDEAL situation is that divorce only occurs as a result of adultery, but if it's another problem in which someone gets divorced and remarried, it's a little frowned upon but not really a slap on the wrist. I mean, I'm sure that wife beaters and parents who molested their kids existed then too, which would probably be decent grounds for a divorce. Besides, if we're going from the Biblical standpoint, all divorce is instigated by the man, and everything's the woman's fault.

Wasn't the allowance for divorce given for the same reason that marriage was limited to one? Namely 'hardness of heart'?

Oh goodness, i've heard of religious women killing their husband so they can marry their 'other lover' Like killing the poor man is better than divorce?!?
How misguided the world can be..

I personally dont believe in divorce, i hate that my mother has been married like 5 times >_<

I want to be married to my fiancee, and God willing, be together until the end heart

Yeah, I think today, divorce is definitely taken advantage of. I think it should be harder to get a divorce, I think court officials should be more involved, I think that if two people don't actually love each other they shouldn't get married (a baby is not a good reason to get married!!!!). Then again, alot of marriages do happen because of an unplanned pregnancy (not all, just alot), and not because the two people love each other. Then they realize, "hocrap, I don't love this person" and fight and the kid is traumatized, and the parents get divorced. That, and people get married so young (at least it seems that way with my friends confused ). I think marriage before the age of 25 should be illegal (well ... ideally ... in practice that's totally wrong). Divorce should be a last resort, especially if children are involved.

While that's legally okay, that's still just creepy. A 30 year old man has no business with an 18 year old girl. domokun

The only thing I could imagine those two having in common is a sex drive. The maturity level is way different, their education levels are likely vastly different, their cohort and peer groups are incredibly different- relationships should be built on more than physical and sexual attraction. I'm 21 and I don't want anything to do with a 30-year-old man.

Exactly. That guy's probably at a point where he's thinking about settling down, having kids. She's got her whole life ahead of her and should be thinking about doing something with herself. Maybe getting an education. She's kinda young to be sitting at that age where she's thinking about being a mother. The only thing he can really be doing for her is holding her back from the personal growth that comes at that college age. And she would really only be holding him back from furthering his own life. One of them is losing out on something. That kind of age difference isn't such a big deal later on, but at that point? Way too much maturity difference. Assuming they're both mentally healthy in the first place...
