I noticed there wasn't a pally thread yet so I decided I'd throw one out there. I know the general consensus for those who don't play a paladin or who've yet to discover the classes true potential is to hate them. Why? Because from a PvP standpoint they are extremely long lived. This can be quite frustrating for those PvP gods who are used to rolling up on an opponent and dispatching them quickly.
So what is this thread here for? To spin your tales of triumph. Or to express your gripes and complaints about the class. I understand there's not a whole lot of traffic in the guild but I'd like to see if that changes here eventually.

I rolled a pally and got it to 70 to see what it's like. One thing that I can definitely say: Pallies have the best survivability out there when ignoring specific talent trees compared to other classes.
However, that's just it. Retribution as a talent tree is...silly. Yes, if you have the gear (by stealing off pissed-off Warriors while instancing or by spending countless of hours PvPing) you'll be able to dish out decent damage...
...but regardless of your gear, the Retadin will not be able to provide as much sustainable DPS as a Rogue, Warlock, or Feral Druid with equal gear. They will still have to rely on mana. And even when you are a good Retadin, guess what? No one will want you because you don't bring much to the table where raiding is concerned.
Another interesting thing to note is that, I believe DPS-specced Holy Pallies (i.e. Shockadins) can provide just about the same damage output as Retadins. Or at least, close enough--and the fact that they'll have to pick up talents that boost their healing...? Hell, why bother speccing into Retribution in the first place? Might as well spec Holy--worst comes to worst you can still heal AND DPS.
And don't even remind me about Blessings and Auras. The only reason why people will even bother inviting you into a raid would be because of those two reasons--and the fact that they can't get a different class to heal.
What about tanking? Well, I won't discount the fact that there have been more than enough Tankadins out there that have proved that yes, Tankadins CAN become Main Tanks.
However, they still (1.) do not have as many "OHSHITE" buttons as the warrior, (2.) rely on mana, (3.) are more gear- and talent-dependent than Warriors, and lastly (4.) are not as versatile. If you want to seriously tank in WoW, the Warrior is still the best class to go.
This is the way it's going to be until WotLK comes out. Do not roll a Pally if you want to DPS, or even "raid heal" (other classes in the raid will end up healing your targets faster, unless your raid leader assigns healing targets). Roll a Pally if you want to be a mobile fortress that takes a VERY long time to take down. Your role will forever be either healing, or tanking. Period.

my first character was a pally and he was pretty cool...until i rolled my DK. i think when i go back to him i might just clear my talents and go completely into holy since everyone always asks me to heal anyway. but so far he is really REALLY under geared (i used to be a complete gear noob) so once i'm done on my dk i am definitely pulling my pally out the gutter and fixing him up properly

Yeah well, my First toon was a Tauren Warrior during Pre BC. In re-rolled a paladin when it came to the horde. The way I see it, A Paladin is more Valuable then a warrior ever could be.
