Kojima doesn't deny the very evident inspirations behind Metal Gear Solid. Snake displays the qualities of two very distinct movie characters, Snake Plissken of Excape from NY, and John Rambo of First Blood.

But which of those two characters is more badass?

As publicly stated, my vote goes to Rambo.
I did enjoy Escape from NY, and I do like John Carpenter, especially his post-apocalyptic cyber punk style. And Kurt Russel is a kick a** actor.
But Rambo has always been my hero, since I was a little child.

Fun Fact: Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russel played cop partners in the movie Tango and Cash.

Nope. He was originally modeled after Kyle Reese. When comparing this screen shot of Micheal Biehn from The Terminator with the box art from the original Metal Gear, it can't be denied. Only the name was inspired from Snake Plisken.

And as far as the bandanna goes, well duh. It was the 80's, man. Rambo was war. Every army dude was wearing a frikkin' bandanna. And bandannas weren't an all too uncommon fashion statement in the 80's. But yeah, I would definitely have to agree that Snake's character was much more influenced by Rambo than Plisken. I mean, just look at First Blood (the only good Rambo movie, through I haven't seen the new one). Rambo took all those mother ******** out stealthy-like. He hardly even used guns. He mostly just used traps, camouflage, etc. and just popped out on unsuspecting goons hunting him down. It's total Snake.

2 and 3 might've went Hollywood, but I don't feel that they corrupted Rambo as a character, so I still love them.
I mean, it's not like Rambo was dishing out cheesy one liners like, (no offense to Bruce Willis) we've seen so much of in Die Hard.
"Now I know what a TV Dinner feels like."
or
"This line is for emergency uses only."
"No ******** s**t, lady! Does it sound like I'm trying to order pizza!?"

and of course, who could forget "Yippe-Ki-Yay ********, don't get me wrong, is all good and fun.
My point is, although the kind of action Rambo has met in 2 and 3 was a bit over the top and "Hollywood", Rambo himself remained stealthy, silent and deadly as ever.

Oh, and Rambo 4 was spectacular. You should really see it. It's what action movies should be about these days. None of that cookie cutter Vin Diesel xXx 'action'.

Eh. I don't like Rambo 2 and 3. Yeah, he's stealthy... sometimes. But, like, twice. The rest of the movie, he's walking through bullets, screaming, and blowing s**t up. Which is all well and entertaining, but not what I would classify as good. It's just way too over-the-top. And I disagree that they maintained his character. His character was much more... cartoony. It's basically the same thing that happened to Rocky with the sequels. Both of those characters just became sort of a parodies of themselves.

Rambo's defining moment: First Blood

Here's the second one in a nut-shell (though a parody, not much of an exaggeration): Rambo UHF

I'm actually pretty sure that the new Rambo is good, because I saw the new Rocky, and it's the best one since the original.

Wow, it wasn't until the end that I realized it was Michael Richards as the POW.

It's all relative though. I mean, when someone says a character becomes a parody of himself, Freddy Krueger pretty much comes to mind. And compared to what they've done with Krueger from movie 3 and on, Rambo's character stayed pretty true to the original. Relatively. I mean, actions aside, Rambo's dialogue (at least in 2) is still pretty serious, and not laughable. That "Worst Nightmare" line came from Rambo 3, and it is my least favorite of the Quadrilogy.

But honestly, First Blood was made based on a book. 2 was simply an action movie, and as an action movie, it's one of the best. If you're looking to see a movie about a macho guy who with lots of killing and explosions, Rambo 2 is the way to go, which was what people wanted to see out of an action movie in the 80's. Rambo 3 was simply taking what Rambo 2 was and upping the action. I don't think it makes them bad sequels, nor do I think it makes them bad movies.

It doesn't make them FILMS per se, with any kind of sad outcome in the end. But as far as action movies go, Rambo 2 and 3 gave what they promised.

And aside from a couple of aspects of First Blood (sewing up wounds, killing animals, the cave, M60), most of the Rambo inspirations in Metal Gear came from 2 and 3.

Rambo 4 was something new entirely. It's somewhat preachy about the true-to-life issue of indecent treatment of villagers in Burma, but it is executed very well. And like the original First Blood, they went with a little more realistic, a little less Hollywood approach. Out of all the new sequels (Die Hard, Indiana Jones, etc.) I think Rambo is the best. I did like the new Rocky as well. Stallone knows what he's doing.

Yeah, the character model was, but most of the inspriation came from Escape from NY

and hell, foxdie could be a complete ripoff of the virus in escape from LA

The cigarettes and the name for Solid Snake came from Escape from NY. And later, I guess the way he talks, his raspy voice. But that's also probably a result of smoking.

From Rambo, he got his Banadana and his whole trained espionage soldier persona.

Of course we see other evidence from both of these movies reflect in the game. I haven't seen Escape from NY in a while, but I do believe there was a whole, President had a briefcase handcuffed to his wrist, kinda like what we saw with the 'football' in MGS2.
Of course Big Boss' eye patch. (Considering Big Boss was just a final boss at first, it's not like it was originally planned for 'Snake'.)
There's probably more, but I haven't watched Escape from LA in a while.

Rambo's influence seems a lot more prominant with Metal Gear 2, than Metal Gear 1 (Aside from the Hind D). In 1, Snake resembled Kyle Reese, and didn't wear a Bandana. With MG2, we saw the Bandana. Roy Campbell, of course, who's a spitting image of Colonel Trautman from Rambo.
The Hind D helicopter, of course, showed up many times in the MG series. In MG1, 2 and MGS as a boss fight.
Ocelot's Electric Torture session in MGS seems a lot like it was inspired by the electric torture scene in Rambo 2.
I'm not sure if this was inspired by Rambo, or if I'm looking into things too much, but Rambo had to save POWs in Rambo 2, and Snake has to save a bunch of POWs in MG1.
This is all, of course, not counting Snake Eater, where they pullet TONS of material from Rambo, that I've already mentioned.
The forest setting.
The cave setting.
Leeches getting stuck to you at the pond.
The ability to travel shirtless.
The M63, and the combat high induced scream.
Use of the knife. (Even though Snake totally shut down Rambo's knife, saying that if you hollow out the handle of a knife to put stuff in it, the handle might become unstable and fall off. XD)
Killing of animals to eat.
Treating your own wounds.
Belnding into your environment. (Even though, unfortunately, you can't cover Snake completely in mud and have him hide against a rock wall. That'd be badass.)
There was one mission in Portable Ops, where you have to blow up some Enemy vehicles, by planting TNT underneath them, that was reminiscent of something similar Rambo did in Rambo 3.
Oh, and the way Campbell is portrayed in Portable Ops, he kinda reminded me or Erickson, that mercenary from Rambo 2, that Rambo knocks out at the end.
Not to mention Big Boss' whole agenda, was very similar to what Rambo was going through originally. That soldiers like Big Boss or Snake are precious commodities in war, but without war, they're considered useless. Pretty much what Rambo was saying at the end of First Blood.
Also, Rambo's code name in Rambo 2 was "Lone Wolf" which is reminiscent of Metal Gear's "Adjective Animal" code name conventions for FOXHOUND.

I still say Snake Pliskin wins simply because he's prettier.
