This is a thread designated to any discussion about Shadows Return. If you haven't read the book, or aren't finished, you might want to leave. Otherwise, feel free to read and discuss the book to your hearts content!

I just finished the book last night (took me just over a day to read!). For me, the book was an emotional roller coaster ride. It didn't help that I'm a very emotional reader. 3nodding (That's all I'm going to say for now. I want someone else to start the discussion!)
PostPosted: Wed Jul 02, 2008 11:40 am

Okay. I've discussed this quite a bit already, but I'll bring up a few key points that I like to talk about.

-Ilar: Were you shocked or did you see it comming? Did you like that Ms. Flewelling brought him back?
For me, I sort of saw this comming. I had read the snippet and once I actually met the character, I knew almost right away he wasn't who he claimed to be and one person I thought he could be was Ilar. Though when Seregil reconized him, I did let out a small curse. I didn't want to be right.
I LOVED and hated that she put him in. Mainly loved. I just haven't ever truly hated a character Ms. Flewelling had made. Illar was the closest to hate, but I had to thank him because...it's only because of him that we had a story in the first place. But after meeting him..I couldn't help but pity him. Mind you, I don't like him and I don't like that even after they saved him he was still manipulative, but I don't hate him. It especially sunk in when he had to go to the bathroom.

-Sebrahn: What in the world do you think of this...boy?
Gosh....I love Sebrahn. That's the truth and I'm stickin' to it. heart
Immediately after I realized it was living, I fell in love. I near cried when the first boy was killed. And when Sebrahn spoke Alec's name? My heart skipped a beat. And in the boat with Seregil when he tried to talk and Seregil taught him a word? Utter cuteness.

-Sebrahn & Blood: What of the fact that he's drinking Alec's blood? Possibly sucking the 'faie out of him?
This is what makes me squirm. Not the blood drinking for once, but the fact that he may be taking Alec's 'faie blood. Now, he also was more 'faie because of the purification, so when Alec joked that he thought Sebrahn was sucking the 'faie right out of him because he was becomming more his normal self...I panicked. Could Alec be reverting to normal, or will he lose it past his 'normal' point?

-Sebrahn: Resurrection...? (And thoughts on his Murderous Song.)
I want to take a moment and clap. Ms. Flewelling? You pulled this off. Not many authors can pull resurrections off. In fact, there are so few that..I've only known Ms. Flewelling to pull it off. I knew he wouldn't die. I mean, he couldn't...but it still pulled on my heart strings.
Then there was that 'song.' My goodness. I knew that was comming because of the mention earlier that he was supposed to be able to kill tons of people with ease..but that...that could be troublesome in the future.

-Sebrahn: The...dragon? And the Haz[not even going to spell that without my book since I lent it out] awakening; your opinion?
I didn't know what to think about this because, frankly, I didn't get it. They saw Dragon IN him, but does that mean he's a dragon? Or has dragon in him? Or...or whaaaat? Yeah. I'm just not sure what to think here. There are a lot of possibilities.
Then the Haz. Yeah. No idea there. I can't wait to see who she is and why Alec's death effected her so much.

And because this is getting long...lazy but not least:
-Alec and Seregil's Hair
I'm going to be honest. I think I about cried when Seregil cut off his hair. Seregil IS long hair! That's who he issssss.
And Alec's braid? I'm iffy. I would prefer it the other way around, but I won't complain. The only reason I'm somewhat okay with it is because a friend drew this picture and now I can rest easy 'cause they're both still sexy.

-takes deep breath-
Okay. I'm sure you are all sick of reading what I have to think now. I'll stop. =D

. . . that's a lot of points and questions. But very good ones none the less.

-Ilar:

I want to say that I saw it coming, but I didn't. After reading Traitor's Moon, I knew he was going to be coming back into the storyline eventually, I just didn't know that it was going to happen then. So, when Seregil recognized him, I actually had to put the book down for a moment and think about all of the things that 'Khenir' took part in with Alec beforehand.
Before I read the book, I absolutely hated him. But once I found out what had happened to him, I pretty much just pitied him. I couldn't bring myself to hate him because Lynn did a good job showing how much his current life as a slave had broken him. In fact, I was a bit saddened when he ran off. (Even though he would have died if he had stayed, I was curious to see what would have happened once he had escaped Plenimar).

-Sebrahn:

Love him, love him, love him!! If I were to ever meet him in real life, I would hug him forever. Never let go. Every time Alec could hear him cry and shout as he was being tormented by Yhakobin, I wanted to cry. Then whenever Seregil would mention leaving him behind, I would get really angry with Seregil. It frustrated me a little when Seregil didn't seem to understand that Alec wasn't going to leave him behind when they first escaped. But he made up for it when he 'taught' Sebrahn his first word.

-Sebrahn & Blood:

Surprisingly enough, this didn't make me squirm at all. Which is weird, because I can be very skirmish. The one alarming thought that I had was after Alec said that it felt like Sebrahn was taking out his 'faie blood. If Sebrahn does take out all of Alec's 'faie blood, wouldn't that leave him as a tírfaie? Which would be shortening his lifespan back down to that of a tírfaie. Seregil has already seen Alec die once, I don't think he wants to see him die again.

-Sebrahn & Resurrection:

I don't think I've ever read a book where one of the characters has been resurrected. I could be wrong. But I felt that Lynn pulled it off rather well. At that point, I was a bit too upset to really care how Alec was resurrected, just as long as he was resurrected.
The death song, I will have to admit that I thought it was a bit cool, if not a bit creepy. At this point I wasn't not too worried about it, he seems to have some form of control over who he killed. Otherwise he would have killed Seregil when he was killing Yhakobin and his men He also would have killed Seregil, Alec, Micum, and Thero during the attack with the necromancer.

-Sebrahn & the Dragon. The Hâzadriëlfaie (pats book sitting faithfully next to me):

When Magyana mentioned seeing a dragon, she was the only one who said that (I take that back, the Hâzadriëlfaie did too). Thero did admit to seeing something else, but he wasn't sure. This got me a bit curious, he probably was seeing a dragon, just didn't realize it. But I also thought back to when Alec saw the Oracle at Sarikali, who said, "You are the wanderer who carries his home in his heart. You are the bird who makes its nest on the waves. You will father a child of no woman. A blessing."
If the Oracle at Sarikali saw Sebrahn (assuming that Sebrahn is the child the oracle talked about) as a blessing, why would the Hâzadriëlfaie feel so threatened? What is so bad about a rhekaro?

-Hair:

Seregil cutting his hair was very upsetting, like you I was close to tears too. Reading about Seregil from Luck in the Shadows to this part where he always had long hair, then cutting it. . . It was just a weird part for me. The same could be said for Alec, whenever I envision him, it's with short hair.

Here's my own.

-Alec's reaction with Seregil's past lovers

It always surprises me how Alec reacts when he learns of another one of Seregil's past lovers. Especially after he found out about Korothan. I thought that Lynn made it sound as if he had lost some of his respect for Korothan when he found out. (Not that I wasn't surprised!) It's almost as if this is Alec's way of showing that he is very possessive of Seregil. He insists to know, yet he always gets grouchy and distant after finding out.

Eheh. I got carried away. sweatdrop

-Illar:

I'm very curious to see where he ended up and the role he'll play in the next book.

-Sebrahn:

Heh. I'll admit to wanting to smack some sense into Seregil whenever he suggested that, but, like you mentioned, he redeemed himself by 'teaching' Sebrahn his first word. <3 [I can't wait to get my second copy from Mystery Galaxy where Ms. Flewelling was doing a signing and signed it. Then I can read that part again...and the whole book.]

-Sebrahn & Blood:

The more I think about it, the more I can't think of it as possible. Like you mentioned, the Oracle said it was a blessing. I'm sure it wouldn't be such a burden to him in that one aspect. I just...couldn't see that much of an effect happening. Could Ms. Flewelling really do that to us? D: [....gosh, of course she could. She's cruel. XD; ]

-Sebrahn & Resurrection:

That's a good point, but what if he feels someone to be an enemy and doesn't know them to be friend? That's my worry.

-Sebran & the Dragon. The Hâzadriëlfaie [-pets your book-]:

Just because the Oracle says it's a blessing, he may not mean for all. And I'm sure the Hâzadriëlfaie want it destroyed because even though Sebrahn can heal and resurrect, the original rhekaro was supposed to be able to kill and destroy and yadda yadda. Even Sebrahn can kill many with a simple song. In the wrong hands, that could be one of the most dangerous items known to their land. I mean, he killed a Necromancer by singing. I'd be wanting to destroy him too if I didn't know the details, just that one had been created.
They, of course, just need to prove that they shouldn't feel threatened by Sebrahn. That, however, will prove to be very, very difficult.

-Alec's reaction:

Some reason, it has never surprised me. Alec is young for one, but you also have to remember...Seregil used to frequent whore houses and Alec actually saw him in the arms of another man. Mind you, this is before he realized he loved him, but they are still images in his mind. So he wants to feel like he's the only one, but when hearing about someone else...I do beleive he treats them a little cooler out of jealousy. Subconciously, of course, because he is too kind to mean it, but he does it.

Today is a very, very good day. =D I received my signed copy of Shadows Return. xd

I was wished Luck in the Shadows by the Goddess. I'm happy~

I am very impressed with how Mysterious Galaxy packaged it. They made complete sure it would come to me in perfect condition. I will be purchasing from them in the future. -nods-

I can't decide how I feel about it... so emotional

Plus: Alec and Seregil, more Thero (in love?), the odd cuteness of Sebrahn, the genius of Flewelling's plot

Minus: Seregil's reaction to Ilar at the end (he would never even think of betraying Alec!), Ilar himself (I pictured him more cunning and hypnotic...), the possibility that Alec loses his fai-ness and thus long life because of Sebrahn, and lastly the most important, Alec and Seregil cutting their hair crying

Ah, but only Seregil cut his hair. Which is still unbelievablely sad.

@ Raezyn - But I don't want Sebrahn to be anything but a blessing sad . Unfortunatly my thoughts on him are going to be blinding me from anything bad. sweatdrop

Oh Seregil..your beautiful haaair.

@Redninjagoddess92: I hope he's a blessing, too. I really do, but there is so much bad that can come from Sebrahn. sweatdrop
Still, he's amazingly..amazing.
