Discussion - who do you think is better? Is one better for tragedy, the other for comedy? I've seen both play Hamlet and would cast my vote for Branagh.

Branagh is the god of Shakespeare!
I hate to say it though, no version of Hamlet that I've ever seen is completely believable, even the Branagh. (It IS the best, however.) Hopefully, the spring production at the American Shakespeare Center will work!
But I ADORE the Branagh version! A few things bother me, though: the bleached-blonde hair; "to be or not to be" as a soliloquy, even though Branagh did it correctly as a monologue under the direction of Jacobi; the Phantom of the Opera chandelier ending; and Fortinbras coming in with the army. I do love the ending with the tearing down of the statue and the head falling perfectly....
I started watching the Olivier version and couldn't make it past the battlements. I was laughing too hard to even try to watch it!!
Any thoughts on the Mel Gibson version? It has some interesting aspects: I love Hamlet in the library talking to Polonius and Ophelia handing out her "flowers." But overall, Hamlet appeared to be an extremely paranoid person. And, to someone who KNOWS Hamlet, they re-arranged and cut WAY too much!

I've only seen Kenneth Branagh and Mel Gibson play Hamlet. Mel Gibson is pretty much garbage compared to the perfection that is Kenneth Branagh. Okay, the guy isn't perfect, but he's the closest thing I will ever see. I loved his version of Hamlet. My English class is currently reading Hamlet (and watching scenes from both of the versions to compare). Kenneth Branagh is making me love it so much more!
