Ouran High School Host Club is a manga series by Bisco Hatori, serialized in Hakusensha's LaLa magazine since August 5, 2003. The series follows Haruhi Fujioka, a scholarship student at Ouran High School, and the other members of the titular host club. The screwball romantic comedy focuses on the relationships within and without the Club and satirizes the clichés and stereotypes that endure in series aimed at girls. The manga has been adapted into a series of audio dramas, an animated television series directed by Takuya Igarashi and produced by Bones, and a visual novel by Idea Factory.

Plot

Haruhi Fujioka is a scholarship student at Ouran High School, a fictional school located in Bunkyō, Tokyo. Because of the superlative cost of the school uniform, Haruhi resorts to wearing long slacks, polo shirts and vests. Combined with her large glasses and tousled short hair, Haruhi's look causes her to be confused for a boy.

Looking for a quiet place to study, Haruhi stumbles upon the Third Music Room, the working place of the Ouran Host Club, a group of six attractive male students (Takashi Morinozuka, called "Mori"; Mitsukuni Haninozuka, called "Hunny"; twins Kaoru and Hikaru Hitachiin; Tamaki Suou, and Kyoya Ootori) who spend their time charming and entertaining the school's girls for profit. During their first meeting, Haruhi accidentally knocks over and break a vase valued at ¥8,000,000, estimated to be US$80,000.

In order to pay off the large debt, Haruhi is employed as the club's "dog" and constantly ordered to do menial tasks like serving food or cleaning up. The Club president, without knowing she is really a girl, promotes Haruhi to "host" as soon as he discovers her potential. Even after the truth comes out in the Club, Haruhi continues the charade and is allowed to pay off the rest of her debt working as a host; in order to accomplish this, Haruhi conceals her true identity/gender from the customers.

Tamaki is a half-Japanese, half-French Ouran High School second-year student and the president of the Host Club, the founding of which was his idea. According to Kyouya Ootori in the beginning of the series, he is the best host with a 70% request rate. The usual instigator of all of the Host Club's antics, Tamaki is prone to dramatics and often acts without thinking or overreacts to trivial things; the other members of the club, particularly Hikaru and Kaoru, often take amusement at his expense. At the same time, they almost always follow his lead, and staunchly support him when it's needed. He is the heart and soul of the Host Club -- he is the one responsible for its creation and formation, and without him, it would fall apart. He also has an attachment to his teddy bear, Kuma-Chan, as shown in the anime.

Despite his foolish and often childish behaviour, Tamaki is kind and generous, and is easily moved by the distress of others, even strangers. Once aware of others peoples' problems, he will do all he can to help them and "ascertain justice". He often makes elaborate plans or "strategies" to help them, and will drag the rest of the Host Club into his altruistic schemes despite their protests or indifference. Tamaki is curious and genuinely smitten by the habits and lifestyles of "commoners", or people not as well-off as he and his classmates at Ouran, and goes about experiencing them with enthusiasm (sometimes for Haruhi's benefit, and sometimes for his own).

His family is involved mostly with the business market, but also handles the school administration. In fact, Tamaki is the son of the superintendent so in effect his family is financially supporting Haruhi as a scholarship student.

Tamaki's grandmother, the true head and decision-maker of the Suou family, bears a grudge against him over the fact that his father had an affair with Tamaki's mother and divorced his legal wife when Tamaki was born. Because there is no other heir to the Suou family, his grandmother acknowledges Tamaki as a Suou, but refuses to allow him to live in the family's main residence and forbids him any contact with his mother in France. Tamaki was particularly close to his mother, whose sickly conditions worried him so much that when he was little he didn't go out and make friends like any normal child, instead choosing to stay with her and play the piano so she would feel better. His mother, in turn, felt shame that she had given up her son in exchange for money, and disappeared.

In spite of all his troubles and the less than ideal circumstances of his Japanese residence, Tamaki appears to hold no hard feelings against his grandmother, and retains an almost excessively positive outlook on life. He sincerely believes that nothing is impossible, and it is this resolve that allows him to reach even the most isolated of people.

Tamaki also proves to be a naturally excellent student, routinely placing second in his class (behind Kyoya) without making any particularly great effort towards studying. He can speak French and Japanese with ease, and lists English as one of his favorite subjects at school. He is a talented piano player, and unlike the other members of the Host Club (such as Kyoya and the Hitachiin brothers) there is surprisingly little artifice in his treatment of the club's customers. In his profile at the end of volume 1 of the manga, Hatori notes that despite his apparent glibness with the girls, he genuinely means what he says. He cannot seem to find it in him to be less than gentlemanly toward girls. He will, however, get rough with anyone who shows harmful intent toward any of his friends, though not necessarily toward himself.

Tamaki is also naive in his own way especially around his friends, but despite his naivete and his ability to miss the most obvious things, Tamaki is able to see through difficult people like Kyoya and the Hitachiin twins, whom he managed to convince to join his club despite their disparate personalities. He correctly identifies Kyoya's insecurities, the twins' loneliness, and Hunny's discontent, and offers his club as a way for them to escape or rail against their respective troubles. Because of this, Kaoru notes that the Host Club is basically a spell that Tamaki's woven over them for their own benefit, and knows that it can't last.

Tsumetai Yoru

Kyouya is a second-year student at Ouran High School, and vice-president of the Host Club. The "cool type" of the club, he is extremely intelligent and quite calculating, capable of manipulating events to serve any number of purposes. His family is primarily involved in hospital management and the medical industry with various other business interests as well, and supplies the school's medical staff and security (via its 100-member private police force). As the third son, Kyouya is unlikely to inherit leadership of the family's business unless he can surpass his older brothers' achievements to his father's satisfaction. This puts a lot of pressure on Kyouya, but he accepts it as a challenge.

Although Tamaki is the official leader of the club, Kyouya can easily influence Tamaki when he pleases, causing Haruhi to refer to him privately as the "Shadow King". He can be distant and aloof, keeping information secret from the others or withdrawing himself from their antics when they disinterest him. In the anime, he was the first Host Club member to realise that Haruhi was actually a girl, but he decided to keep the knowledge to himself in order to see what the outcome would be. Kyouya keeps files on the students at Ouran Academy and is even in contact with Haruhi's father, from whom Kyouya obtained Haruhi's photographs and personal information. He does not hesitate to create profit from the Host Club's popularity, even to the point of auctioning off personal belongings (like Haruhi's mechanical pencil), and he keeps Haruhi tied to the Host Club by finding various ways to add to her debt, including interest and the cost for her food and costume rentals. He is also a photographer (though not official), taking pictures of the Host Club to sell for profit.

Kyouya initially befriended Tamaki because his father ordered him to do so for business reasons, but as time passed their friendship has become genuine. (In the anime series, though not in the manga, both Mr. Suou and Mr. Ootori consider Haruhi to be an excellent future wife for their sons, and this is a point of some friction between the two fathers.) His only other known close relationship is with his married sister, Fuyumi.

Kyouya has low blood pressure and typically wakes in a bad temper, earning him the nickname "Low Blood Pressure Demon Lord". During vacations, he tends to sleep in until noon.

He claims to do nothing which does not profit him, and to be essentially an egoist. He tells Haruhi that this is the only reason he is friends with Tamaki and involved with the Host Club, for personal merits. He also claims that there is "not one millimeter of similarity" between himself and Tamaki. However, this is proved wrong by Haruhi in both the anime and manga for Kyouya is altruistic in his own way, and often acts on Tamaki's behalf, most notably during the school festival in volume six of the manga. In his profile, Bisco Hatori notes that despite what he says he and Tamaki are good friends, even if the path to their friendship seemed "like a long bad first date."

Bokura no Love Style

Hikaru and his younger identical twin, Kaoru, are first-year students in the same class as Haruhi. The twins tend to imply an incestuous relationship for fun, making a show of it for the benefit of the "brotherly love" fans among the Host Club's customers. Unlike Tamaki, their interaction with the club's customers is entirely an excuse to satisfy themselves; the "devil" types of the club, they enjoy making a game of manipulating others for their own amusement, and are easily bored by most things. Both have a habit of calling Tamaki "my lord" (tono in Japanese). This was originally because when Tamaki first asked them to join the Host Club, they referred to Tamaki's speech as that of "an idiot lord." However they are the only ones to refer to him as such and, together with their staunch support of him, it could be seen as genunine.

The two of them are extremely close and dependent upon one another, seeing the world primarily in terms of "us" and "those apart from us," thus having little concern for anyone else. They were the most popular on the show with a 85% request rate. Prior to joining the Host Club, they had very little interaction with other people. After Haruhi joins the Host Club, Hikaru and Kaoru's world really begins to expand. Haruhi proves to be able to naturally distinguish between the two of them and sees them as two individuals rather than interchangeable; she can easily tell them apart with her natural intuition. This is something new for Hikaru and Kaoru, as previously nobody was able to tell them apart, and they develop a fondness for Haruhi since she recognizes them as individuals. Since they also enjoy teasing Tamaki, they flaunt their relationship with Haruhi and flirt with her.

But, although the twins seem to be exactly the same, Hikaru is more selfish, and childish than Kaoru. Kaoru is mature, kind, smart, and sensible, while Hikaru is childish, meaner, more dense and less sensible.

Their mother Yuzuha specializes in clothing design, and they occasionally provide clothing of her design for the Host Club's events or in an effort to get Haruhi to dress more femininely. When their mother appears at the school festival, she proves to have a very strong personality, and it is clear that the twins take after her. They, too, have a mutual knack for fashion, and in the manga, they are sometimes shown styling Haruhi's hair or doing her make-up. Also, it's noted that their surname is their mother's, and that their father had married into the Hitachiin family. In the manga, it was mentioned by one of the twins that the Hitachiins are primarily of a matriarchal lineage and that female Hitachiins are more outstanding than the males. The twins are afraid that they might end up being weaklings like their father since they resemble him, but Haruhi notes that they resemble their mother more.

Despite the fact that he rarely speaks or smiles, his tall, tanned, and handsome figure earns him many customers. According to Kyouya, "his taciturnity is his selling point," and many of his admirers are the more introverted and serious girls at Ouran. He is labeled the "wild type" host. Because Mori acts largely on his instincts, this label fits him rather well. Additionally, Mori is the Japanese national champion in kendo.

Moreover, Mori is Hunny's cousin. The Morinozuka family had protected the Haninozuka family for many generations. As the two families were joined by marriage two generations ago, the families became related to each other, thus breaking the master-servant tradition. Nevertheless, Mori still faithfully protects Hunny and is always by his side, attending to his wishes and watching out for him. In many ways, he is like a devoted big brother. However, Mori doesn't spoil his cousin. During the time when Hunny had a toothache, he was the first to get Tamaki to impose a ban on sweets in the Host Club. He often becomes clumsy when feeling distressed. At other times Mori will needlessly baby Hunny for something as minor as a scratch or trip.

Generally, Mori doesn't seem to express any emotion. He doesn't appear to care what anyone thinks of him unless it upsets Hunny; that's when Mori starts acting truly strange and defensive. The only other time he reacts to someone is when Umehito Nekozawa puts him in a sticky situation.

In contrast to Hunny, who is bad-tempered when he wakes up, Mori becomes uncharacteristically gregarious and friendly when he is tired (even a little flirtatious) which frightens the other hosts. Also, after taking a nap, he usually forgets what he has done while he's tired.

Despite the fact that he looks like a 10-year-old and always carries a stuffed toy bunny named Usa-chan (Bun-Bun in English) with him, Hunny is a senior in Ouran High School and the club's oldest, most "experienced" member. His customers love his adorable and charming behaviour. Indeed, he often calls everyone by affectionate nicknames like "Haru-chan" for Haruhi, "Tama-chan" for Tamaki, "Hika-chan" for Hikaru, "Kao-chan" for Kaoru, and "Kyou-chan" for Kyouya. The only exception is Takashi Morinozuka, who Hunny calls by his first name of Takashi, and vice-versa. As cute and defenseless as Hunny looks, he comes from a prestigious, martial arts family who trains most of Japan and other nations' elite guards. He is, however, not without weakness. Other than an obsession for candy, he also appears to be claustrophobic as seen by his panic when attempting to use Haruhi's 'small' bathroom in volume three of the manga and his failed attempt to scare Haruhi in the dark transport container in episode 8 of the anime.

Before the founding of the Host Club, Hunny was the captain per of the school's Karate Club, and did his best to seem strict and tough in order to please his father. However, when Tamaki approached him about starting the Host Club and expressed the opinion that being true to one's self is a stronger path than living a lie, Hunny chose to leave the karate club and join the Host Club instead. His decision greatly dismayed his younger brother Yasuchika Haninozuka (nicknamed Chika), who is disturbed by Hunny's childish ways to the point that he thinks Honey might be an alien. Yasuchika, who succeeded Honey as captain of the karate club, periodically challenges Hunny to duelling matches, which he uses as a means of learning from Hunny and improving on his techniques.

In light of Hunny's martial arts prowess, some rumours have been spread about him amongst the members of the club. One such story involves an alleged international incident between Japan and the United States which occurred as a result of Hunny being woken up from his daily afternoon nap on a "training" holiday, causing an explosion resembling his stuffed animal (Usa-chan), wiping out two United States Green Beret guard platoons instantly. Haruhi dismissed this as rubbish only to be convinced when it is revealed that Hunny's blood type (AB) is the same as Kyouya. Honey also wakes up in a bad mood but unlike Kyouya, Hunny tends to wake up early.

Hunny was once described by the author as "so insanely cute and charming that it's almost a crime".

He has another side to him, the aptly named "Dark Mode Hunny". A meaner, sarcastic, selfish version of his normal self. Though he still keeps his bunny with him, he places a pair of sunglasses over its eyes to give it a "badder" look.

Haruhi Fujioka is a freshmen attending Ouran High School under a scholarship.

Shortly after arriving at Ouran, Haruhi accidentally broke a vase worth ¥8,000,000. In order to pay off the debt, she is forced to work for the Host Club. Her peers mistake her for a male, given her outward appearance, and have her work as a servant of the host club.

By the end of chapter 1, the entire club realizes that Haruhi is female; however, due to her large debt, she must continue to work for the club. (In the manga series it is discovered when she drops her ID, but in the anime Tamaki sees her getting undressed.) She introduced instant coffee to the club who in turn made a big fuss about peasant beverages and were left in awe.

In chapter 2, Haruhi accidentally lost her first kiss to a girl when Tamaki, who slipped on a banana peel the Hitachiin twins threw away while trying to prevent the kiss, knocked her into the girl. Her father, a great okama (drag queen) at an okama bar, was not too pleased with this. In the manga version, however, she kissed the girl when Tamaki grabbed the bottom of her shirt, causing her to fall forward. Her father later becomes distressed when he sees the image on a large screen the host club acquired in order to save Haruhi.

Haruhi allows the club members to involve her in their antics, but doesn't like it when people comment on how amazingly "feminine" she is. She involves herself and enjoys some of the games. She even became frightened of ghosts in episode 21 during their class's fright fest and is shown to have a deep fear of thunderstorms.

Haruhi has stated on more than one occasion that she is at Ouran in order to pursue her dream, and wants to see how far it can take her.[citation needed] She chose to go to Ouran as she could then get a scholarship to go to the law department in university.
