There are rumors of movies in the works again at last....but not very AUTHENTIC-sounding movies, I fear.... cry http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&ncl=http://ukpress.google.com/article/ALeqM5iuxQ0qKhOLOf37AMoGFqm-xUAPZw
Personally, I'm appalled by what I'm hearing so far. I think there's very little chance of an authentic, properly-made Holmes movie because the trend nowadays for for huge blockbuster action-superhero-fantasy movies with tons of CGI & stuff. And from the sound of it, that's exactly what one of them is about to become. gonk

Robert Downey Jr? D: WHAT?!
That name, in and of itself, is enough to cause horror.
BUT. I must say that, being a Phan, there is still hope. A lot of new Phans were converted by the movie and proceeded to read Leroux's book, and came to realise that the book was awesomer than Andrew Lloyd Webber's monstrosity. We might be able to use that same phenomenon to our advantage in this situation.

Yeah, or we might end up with a bunch of kids trying to join who expect to babble about either a superhero-like Holmes or a comedy Holmes-Watson team by the actors from "Talladega Nights"....Gonk:
The only possible use I would conceive for this is if one of them promoted with a Gaia quest & we finally got a deerstalker from it.

That is true. A deerstalker would be highly awesome.
And rest assured I will screen all incoming applications directly after the release of those... abominations.
Will Ferrell. Honestly. gonk He's not good for anything, especially not Watson. This will just reinforce the idea that Watson is an idiot who is only good for comic relief.

So will I. neutral Heck, this will probably make Holmes look an idiot, if it isn't done with affection--and the previous screen credit does NOT encourage me that will be the case. I mean, the Peter Cook/Dudley Moore Hound of the Baskervilles was pretty insane, yet not in an evil way. I'm afraid this will be on such a bluntly low-IQ level that it will simply consist of making them both look like morons.
So there's what we may have to look forward to--Holmes the vigilante-style superhero detective, and Holmes the complete moron. crying

I'm just terrified that they'll give him some sort of romantic interest, because that's what they do to famous unattainable literary bachelors. Holmes will be suave, dashing, and a real ladykiller, because Hollywood is unable to fathom a hero who's not into sex.
Either that, or they'll turn it into Sherlock and the Adventure of Brokeback Mountain, because God forbid two men living in the same flat should just be best friends.

Well, the romance thing has been getting added in ever since William Gillette & his famous play, after all. That's not new--not pleasing to purists, but not new. Man, why don't they adapt the Mary Russell/Holmes storyline if they want a romance, doggonit?

Because that's not romance. It's not sappy or steamy, and therefore cannot be included in a movie. rolleyes What Holmes and Russell have is an intellectual relationship, which doesn't appeal to the depraved masses.

I....can't tell if I'm terrified or excited.
Wow.
Hmm.
On one hand, it could bring in more people with SH interests.
On the other, Will Ferrell?!
On the other hand, broadening the potential...
Oh God. I smell romance coming.

Yeah, but if they did the first 2 books, you get a lot of tension gradually building up to that rather gratuitous scene on the docks...they could have fun with that. smile

Precisely my sentiment, Blue Logic. sweatdrop Ferrell WTF?
Eirwyn: I'm a rather choosy reader, and I have to admit that I skimmed the dock scene rather quickly and now avoid it when I reread the book. >>;

lol So do I--I find it downright cringe-inducing Mary-Sue-ness, myself. But if I'm gonna be subjected to that sort of thing, I'd as soon it be those two at the start of their romantic relationship (and there IS still a romance going on--it's just quietly kept in the background in all the books afterwards. If you notice, you can see it here & there. Mary just doesn't choose to tell us about it any more) rather than inventing someone out of nowhere, or creating some wild romance with Irene Adler or something.

Personally, I was always an Adler/Holmes shipper before I encountered the Russell stories. xd I thought it was a perfect match.
And if they pull some bosomy wench out of their tight Hollywood ~cencored~ and force Holmes into a relationship with her, I will not be responsible for my actions or those of my 20-gauge shotgun.
