If L wasn't killed, do you think that he would have been able to prove that Lite was Kira??? I'm still debating...

I think so. The whole reason that Rem killed L was b/c he was getting to close to the truth. L would have gone through with testing out the notebook to see if the 13 day rule was true. And I know that even if the rule was proven false, it doesn't make Misa and Light automatically guilty. But it was pointing towards Misa, since the killings had started again when she was taken off surveilance. Then Misa might have had to give up the notebook and the eyes, then take them up later, and if this kept going on, she would have eventually died in a short period of time.
Plus L is uber smart. He already suspected Light, but just didn't have the proof. I'm sure it could have found it eventually.

Although, I have to pat Near on the back for doing such a good job.

I maintain that L did solve it. He just died before he could tell anyone else. Mostly because he was already dying when he realized it.
I also maintain that the taskforce didn't let L proceed properly so that he could have captured Light without being killed. (Not that I blame them. They were good people, they just were a little too quick to assume things without having all the facts.)

I missed the death of L in the anime, but I didn't know he was going to die so I read it online at OneManga.com and I hated the page where you see his face staring blankly at you, ohmygod I cried! crying I am forced to watch anime on YTV every Friday (Saturday now) cause of slow dial up

I also think that L would've eventually solved the mystery. I mean, he's never left a case unsolved in his entire career as a detective. Plus, if he hadn't dies, i would hope that more information on his background would be included (i know thats unrelated, i just wanted to make that comment ^^)
But yeah, L rocks and totally would've had the case closed in a matter of weeks, considering he likes everything to be 100% positive beforehand. Near and Mello did a pretty good job as a duo, but without each other... well i think they just won't measure up individually.

as it has already been said before me, L did actually solve the case. he just died before he could prove it to anyone else. its amazing to think that he was so close, but ended up being killed off by Rem.
oh, and i still do think that he is smarter than Near...

I think that L had pretty much alread solved the case, he just didn't have any evidence or proof that Light was Kira. He also seemed to know he was going to die. Which really made me cry, still does every time I watch it sad

I agree and if he was able to test the Death Note and prove that rule wrong that would have been the most concrete evidence against Light so far that I could think of unless I've forgotten something.

He alrady had. The evidence he had compiled against Misa and Light would have been enough to put them both behind bars were they belong. Unfortunatley, this is fictional Japan and L didnt want Light to be Kira so it played havoc with his deductive reasoning.
Also, what's wrong with Near? He's not that bad for an inexpirienced midget...

He did solve it. However! He just had no proof. neutral In fact, he was absolutely sure he had Kira when he deducted Raito was at 7% risk rate.
