Life for Silvrendir had never been easy, but he had never complained. At the beginning of his life, he had been enthralled by his older yet smaller sister, Idhril, who had taken him under her wing and helped him with everything he needed to know or wanted to do. When he felt the urge, the biological need to find something of which he could become guardian, Idhril was his choice, and he had never looked back.
Taking care of Idhril had been wonderful. Even when Kaito joined the family and become a constant threat to the young elven girl, Silvrendir took the beatings (not that the neko had meant any of it, he was simply playing) in order to protect his sister. He had even learned the magic of his grandfather to protect her further, after once having gone so far as to break Kaito's wrist in an attempt to protect her. As an adult he had finally - finally! - begun to feel that he was skilled enough to earn the title of her guardian, to truly take her under his wing and say that he would take care of her and protect her from any danger.
But now all of that had changed. Now, she had found a friend ... a friend whom she would not let out of her sight. Having once spent all of her time with Silvrendir, she now spent every waking (and sleeping) moment with the doll she had found ... a living doll, a marionette, really, named Joruri.
Silvrendir felt lost now. He felt as though he had been replaced with this doll that his sister had found. He felt as though he was no longer needed, like she had forgotten about him completely.
The short, red-haired angel was jealous, jealous of the time that Joruri spent with Idhril that he himself could not. The worst part of it all?
They were of the same race, the same origin, and the two of them could go together, alone, to a world that was off-limits to Silvrendir.
Now, days later, he was sitting in the windowsill of his bedroom, legs hugged to his chest, silver wings drooping sadly, staring desolately out of his window. He hadn't spoken in days, his appetite had dropped and nearly vanished, and he didn't pay attention to anything. He couldn't read, he couldn't study, and no one knew if he heard a word they said when they spoke to him. As quiet as he had always been ... now he was as silent as the grave.

Summer was a wonderful time for Yukiko, even though she was named to be a child of snow, because she chose to look after flowers (the one thing she felt gave universal happiness) she was really a child of summer. Summer was the time flowers from spring showed the fruit of their labours and the brighter flowers of summer bloomed. Yet all was not well, and she knew this because everyone was talking about it. Not aloud of course, but in whispers of worry, Silvrendir was quieter than usual, no one knew why, though Yukito whose name was almost exactly like hers had his suspicions.
Yukiko too had a feeling she knew what it was, but she could not say. After all what did a teen know compared to an adult like Silvrendir? She didn't really protect flowers, she gathered them up, made sure they grew next season, she couldn't protect the same way Silvrendir did. After all flowers did not last forever, not like elven girls.
She shook her head as she peered down at the candied rose petals she had prepared that morning. She was going to have to do something about Silvrendir, after all what was the point of protecting something that made people happy if they were not happy? Putting some pink petals into a bowl she picked it up and carried it to Silvrendir's room.
Normally she would have knocked as it was part of the manners ingrained into her, but this time she would set it aside. Besides she had a feeling that Silvrendir wouldn't even answer her. Instead she walked right in and presented him with the bowl of candied petals.
"I brought you a treat," she told him as cheerfully as she could.

Silvrendir felt the hairs on the back of his neck prickle, telling him that someone was near, and that someone was going to enter his room. It was no surprise then that the door opened, though he was indeed surprised to hear that it was Yukiko who entered. Sure, they were the same race, and the same age (though not stage) ... but ... he really didn't interact that much with her.
To be fair, he really didn't interact at all with most people, even in his own family, so anyone other than his mother would have surprised him.
Still, his green eyes remained as emotionless and as empty as they had been, and he paid Yukiko little mind, not even looking at the treat that she had brought him. He was in no mood for treats. How could he feel happy when the one person he had cared about most had suddenly begun to act as if he didn't matter anymore? Or even exist, for that matter?
He merely looked at Yukiko briefly, then, before turning and staring back out the window. The only sign that he had even acknowledged her presence was the slight twitch of one wing. His silence could not have been surprising: he had always been an angel of few words, and only ever spoken when absolutely necessary ... or when very excited about something.

She tried not to frown, she was always told that frowning did not help matters, which was why Yukito always smiled. Or so she was told, though honestly she sometimes wondered if he didn't do that to irk people. Putting her older brother out of her mind she set the bowl down and tried instead to climb onto the ledge along side Silvrendir.
It wasn't that hard, they weren't very big to begin with, smaller than even her Mommy and she had always thought her Mommy was the smallest person in the adult world. Well, it looked like her and Silvrendir were going to be, at least within their family.
"Silvrendir?" she sat on her knees, "If you don't like petals that's okay. I have strawberries instead, or sunflower seeds?"

All Silvrendir really wanted was to be left alone with his thoughts and his worries, but it looked as though Yukiko was going to join him whether he wanted her to or not. He sighed inwardly, outwardly not even flinching, and moved over in his window seat to make some more room for his aunt.
Why was everyone in his family so insistent on always being in each others' faces? he couldn't help but wonder for a moment; but he knew the answer: he knew that it was because they all cared about each other, and that they all therefore cared for him. And yet while he knew in his heart that this was a good thing, that it was special, and rare, he couldn't help but feel irritated at it at the same moment.
He only wanted to be left alone ... to brood and think about what was going on ... and figure out what he could do ...
He shook his head slowly, his eyes still on the tree that was just outside his window. He didn't want a treat ... he didn't want anything to eat ... he wasn't hungry. Even though he could feel his stomach growling, it was nothing more to him than a noise. He felt no hunger at all.

Yukiko pouted, the others didn't understand, and to a point she didn't understand neither, but she knew it had to do with Idhril. Ever since her niece had left Slivrendir had been like this. Then again she couldn't imagine what it would be like if her flowers left her, but honestly it wasn't like Idhril was dead!
"Silver.........." she murmured, "Come on, you can't sit there all the time, you're going to become paler than Krys!"
Actually she was pretty sure there was no one paler than Krys seeing as he was white as a sheet. Not because he lacked sun, he actually had sunburn once but didn't tan. The boy pretty much could not have dark skin to save his life.
"Maybe we can ask to go to the ocean and see the big fish again."

Silvrendir kept silent for several long moments as he pondered Yukiko's words. Would he become pale? He was sitting in the sunshine. Was it bad to be pale, even if he did go white? He didn't see the problem. He knew his family was worried about him, but his own worry was what pressed him at the moment, and he didn't much care about anything else.
Finally he broke his silence, the first time in days, though he kept his eyes on the tree outside.
"It doesn't matter," was all he said, and his voice was soft, quiet, barely audible.
What did it matter if they went to see the ocean and the fish and the whales? What was the point? He wouldn't enjoy it, he couldn't enjoy it. Not knowing that he wasn't able to protect the one person, the one entity in every world in existence that he wanted to protect. What right did he have if he could not fulfill his role as guardian? Not to protect was to deny his own purpose, his very reason for living ...
Why couldn't Yukiko understand? he thought briefly. She was like him ... wasn't she? But then ... her guardee had not vanished. Or betrayed her. Or deserted her.
... had he done something to offend Idhril? Was that the reason she had left? He was startled by his own thoughts. What if it was his fault? Was there something that he could have done differently?

Yukiko sighed taking a proper seat, her knees ached sitting like the way she had been. As a child she had read about all manner of things considering flowers, even their uses and as a result she knew a few things. Listening to people, hearing stories about her sister Elnara was her favourite. She thought... it was so romantic.
Twirling a lock of her light blue hair, she thought about that. Elnara was to be married, at a proper wedding, from what she understood Seconds didn't have weddings, but it was no less romantic some of their stories. Now that she thought of it, Silvrendir reminded her of those love sick people from those really cheesy love stories.
"Do you think she'll marry him?" Yuki finally asked her nephew.
If anyone knew it might be Silvrendir who had the best idea.

There was no need for Silvrendir to ask who Yukiko was talking about. Idhril was the only subject on his mind, and everything anyone said automatically had something to do with her, in his mind.
That didn't mean he liked the question. Sure, he could answer it easily ... but he didn't like the answer that he came up with.
"Seconds don't marry," he said in the same soft voice, closing his eyes and blocking everything from his sight. "They mate."
For life, yes, which was technically the same thing as being married ... but he didn't want to answer the real question. Did he think that Idhril and Joruri would mate?
He knew they would.
Did he want them to?
Not particularly.
Did he even like Joruri?
Now that was a good question, one to which he honestly did not know the answer. He was jealous, yes, and the marionette had taken all of Idhril's attention, and so no, Silvrendir didn't like the doll. On the other hand, he was quiet, he was kind, he was helpful, he had a very subservient attitude and had already proved that he would do anything for Idhril, anything at all that the girl asked ... and in that regard, yes, Silvrendir liked the doll. He was too much like Silvrendir himself not to like him.
He didn't like to think about it. But knowing all of these things ... where did that leave him? What was he supposed to do, now that he was no longer needed?

"Marry, mate, it's the same thing only without that.... what are the adults calling it now?" she had to think about it, "A wedding, like the one Mommy and Daddy had."
She tilted her head a bit, he was thinking about it, and he knew whom she was talking about. Yukiko thought it would be nice if they did marry, after all this person did make Idhril happy right? Althought it left Silvrendir sad.
"Is that why you're upset? Because you know they'll marry someday?"
She didn't like the word mate, she thought marry was much nicer sounding, though she didn't know why she was pushing the issue. Probably because she wanted to get through to Silvrendir that it was not the end of the world. It wasn't like he failed (assuming that is what it was all about), but rather she just moved on.

Silvrendir stared silently out the window, and only a slight clenching of the jaw indicated that he had heard his aunt. Why did everyone have to assume they knew what was wrong? Yukiko was the only one who was even remotely like him, but even she couldn't understand it.
But of course they would never know anything if he didn't tell them - or at least, correct them.
He shook his head then. No, he wasn't upset because he knew that his sister would mate with that doll she had brought home. Well, in a way he was, he realized - and he changed his head shake into a shrug. It wasn't so much that she had someone else as it was the fact that she was going to leave him behind.
Suddenly he turned to his aunt once more, his green eyes filled with anxiety.
"You ... you're like me," he said hesitantly, "you have the instinct to guard over something ... what ... what do you think ... life will be like ... without something to guard over?"

That was very hard to imagine, and because that was so, it forced Yukiko to think about it really hard. She couldn't imagine a world without flowers, or anything to do with flowers. Even the shape itself was everywhere, but if she didn't have it to protect even after she chose it?
"I... would not know what to do with myself," Yukiko admitted after moments of silence, "It would be.... strange? No.... weird...? No.... it would give me an uneasy feeling, because then I would feel useless."
She had to admit that without flowers what would she be? Well she knew that, she would still be someone who wanted to give others happiness, with or without flowers that was the case.
"It would be hard, but I would be compelled to find a way to continue my guardianship in a way that would make me feel better."

Silvrendir nodded. "That's what I thought," he murmured softly, turning his eyes once more to the tree outside.
He fell silent once more, lost again to his own thoughts. The words she had used - uneasy ... strange ... weird ... useless - were exactly how he felt, already even now, even though Idhril and Joruri were still living in the inn. Since coming home with the doll, Idhril had barely spoken to him, barely acknowledged him; and since he no longer had to keep Kaito at bay, he honestly felt as if there was no use for him. What would he do to keep himself busy? What was the point in it all? The one thing he had ever wanted to do, keep Idhril protected from anything around her ... was gone.
She didn't need him anymore, and he knew it. He felt it. Hard.

Yukiko sighed, was this what it was all about? The truth of the matter Yukiko was not surprised that things changed with Idhril. People changed, objects unless disease or some other disaster did not change at all.
"Well.... what would you do now?" Yukiko asked, "You can do... anything now."
She had seen his guardianship over Idhril more like it had come to an end, that he had done is duty and now she was grown to be marry. It wasn't completely over, she was sure, after all Idhril would always need her family. Who knew? Maybe they would have a child? She would need help then.
