Ranks are based off of Pay Grade. Pay Grade is the Federal Governments way to denote how much you are to be paid each pay period. Each Pay Grade in each of the Armed Services is the exact same, however the Ranks assigned to each Pay Grade differ depending on the branch you are looking at. Military leadership is based off of this structure and as such appropriate courtesies are well. Obviously the longer you have been in and the better job you do can earn you a promotion in pay grade/rank. As such you are required to know each services rank and render appropriate obedience to orders and directives issued from those of higher rank.
