Scenerio 2: Anything you can do, I can do better!

He could have left.

Oh yes, he could have BRAVED THE RAIN and SLEPT IN A TREE. Instead he'd allowed himself to be pulled along on the whims of some insane woman who had not only gotten them all drunk....

but he was still pretty damn sure she was responsible for the.. -interesting- way the next morning started.

With no further thought on said morning, as it had passed more than several hours ago, but several days previously, Kanda instead found himself waking up, yet again, in some place he wasn't quite comfortable with. In fact, it took more than the week (give or take) that had passed to get used to not being in a familiar atmosphere first thing in the morning.

Nor in friendly company.

While he found none of the sexual connotation that the other man whom he'd been, more or less 'forced' to room with, due to Asteria's observational skills of how uncomfortable that first night had been, Kanda would have rather spared the comments about himself and the 'Harlot'.

Nor was he keen on hearing Yoss shriek out some line of expletives and Aster let out a sound like her ear had just been ripped off as a wake-up call EVER AGAIN.

At least he'd gotten his coat back. It was the single 'positive' thought amongst all the dreariness that was the 'morning fog' that ate away at his brain as he left the room (By no means wanting to be in the same room as the verbose pain in the a** when he was concious), entertaining the idea of taking a peek to see if either of the females were awake (well, if Aster had been awake he'd probably have known by now, though....) for about a second, before he headed down the stairs.

And he probably would have gone somewhere if said Asteria hadn't been sitting in the lounge with the same zombie-esque look she had the previous day.

'She's not a morning person....'

She wasn't a morning person.

So why in the -hell- did she keep getting up so early? Maybe it was the fact that her right ear was still ringing (and partially deaf...) from days previous. God, what had she done to piss Yoss off again.....?

It was obvious she was trying to think on just this thought, before she simply gave up and slumped back in the chair, practically sinking in it with a groan of annoyance. It was only then she saw the Monochromatic being standing off to one side, tilting her head to look at him.

Oh... Grouchy face to the second power.

"'Morning.." she grumbled, sitting up again and stretching in a stereotypical (and ironic) cat-like way.. which did nothing to wake her up, but made her shoulders feel hella nice. This was followed by another sigh which accompanied another sink into the chair....

and off the chair...

and onto the floor.

Well Damn.

He could have left.

Oh yes. He could have braved the rain and slept in a tree-- which, looking back in retrospect, seemed like a perfectly reasonable tradeoff for being spared of the ABOMINABLE SHE-BEAST they called 'Aster'.

... Yossarian used 'they' of course because he preferred titles like 'woman' or 'demonic banshee' instead, as he thought them far more appropriate for her darling personality.

But the dark male quickly digressed from that thought as he worked to dry himself off, fresh from a warm morning shower (one of the few perks to Inn lodging) and sporting the lovely minimalist fashion statement of a towel around the waist. With Kanda gone and the door firmly locked, he was free to scrub off at his leisure... which was certainly a positive, considering the ridiculous amount of hair and fur he had to address.

It had taken the better part of thirty minutes for him to cease dripping all over the floor, discarding a grand total of four drenched towels back on the bathroom towel rack before he went to grab his (also freshly cleaned) clothes. Thankfully, tugging them on was a much swifter procedure, followed by a quick combing (he'd never admit to keeping that damned trinket, let along USING it) before the usual ponytail was reinstalled.

He couldn't believe it had been a week since the fiasco started... and a week now that he'd been enduring the company of three raving LUNATICS for no logical reason. What was wrong with him, playing into that devil-woman's hand so willingly?!

Last to be replaced was the usual disgruntled expression, tugging the corners of his lips into a thin frown as he unlocked the door, heaved a sigh, and sauntered bravely out to the 'public' of the little establishment to find breakfast.

He was, in fact, the last to arrive-- as the young Shae Harper had long since been among the waking; in fact, she was the first of them all to stir.

Not that she even slept much in the first place, given the fact that her room mate was a notorious brain terrorist that demanded keeping an eye on at all times... and so the latter female remained pathetically deprived of any restful slumber-- which showed plainly as she sat on a fainting couch in the far corner of the open room, staring dazedly at the wall with Del twitching in her lap and a cup of tea clasped in hands that seemed to be shaking vaguely.

On the bright side, however, she HAD managed to get a new outfit-- as it turned out that the elderly woman with a love for Yossarian's beautiful hair had been an avid chess aficionado and was more than happy to play her for a spare change (from her husband's wardrobe) as the wager. It wasn't fancy-- just a loose pair of black slacks and an off-white collared shirt (which was coincidently MUCH too large for her) with a drab cravat she'd only tied loosely, but it was comfortable, and concealing, and that was more than enough for her.

It was funny to think that they'd still managed to stick together after a week... Just how had THAT happened?

And going further, what awaited their joyous little crew today?

While the nice thing to do would have been to put the zombied female back into the chair she'd taken over, the smart thing, and what Kanda ultimately did, was to secure his own cup of tea and take to one of the tables that littered the place, pulling a newspaper someone had left there from the day previous to look over it.

Not a full 'read', but a skim moreso. While the affairs of the world were none of his concern, the paper had a tendancy to hold news that could lead to work.... which would-technically- work as an excuse to leave... but ultimately he'd somehow been swindled into saying he'd help the pathetic mass in the middle of the carpet out.

.... Mn, just a few things here and there worth noting. Perhaps he'd be willing to show said opportunities to leave to the aura of hissfits to come (like the Ghost of Christmas yet to come) whom had just entered the room.

It was only once he'd finished his glancing and his tea that he rose to secure something called 'breakfast', less he be harassed over an attempt to skip it by Asteria...... again.

Had one not known better it would have been presumable that Aster was dead, face-first on the floor. She didn't exactly twitch (a habit she had in sleeping as well), nor did she breathe as noticably as others might have. It was only the smell of what she'd call 'clean' AKA soap that caused her to sit up with a groan, followed by falling back against her seat previously.

"Why do mornings have to be so damned early?" she asked, a rather stupid question logically, but philosophically a sensical one. Too bad this was a group of some semblance of logic.

Logic and tea.... and coffee. Coffee was definately something Aster took advantage of as soon as her legs started to work, sitting back in her chair and sipping it in an ironically similar fashion to Kanda, having stolen away a more current newspaper to skim, as her own reading abilities were very lacking. It was only after a couple of pages she paused, practically choking on her coffee (and obviously 50% more awake), before she set it down and took a glance towards her unwilling followers.

In fact, she probably would have said something, before she took a deep breath and again picked up her mug and took a sip.

Hmmm.
PostPosted: Mon Jul 21, 2008 6:50 pm

".........."

There were certain things that you just never got used to, no matter how often it happened... and Aster's semi-daily semi-death coma was one of those things. Poor Yossarian nearly tripped over the woman's fallen body as he entered and, glancing down at her seemingly lifeless body with a look akin to dull exasperation, he heaved a deep, long-suffering sigh.

"And what invisible force has compelled you to the state of an incapacitated corpse this morning?" he grumbled (rhetorically), knowing he'd regret it, but reaching down to grab her by the shirt collar and give it a tug. He wasn't about to scrape her off the carpet, but at the same time, the tripping hazard was a great annoyance... and the goading did well enough to get her back on her feet.

With that problem solved, he continued on through the now-free walkway to grab himself a cup of coffee as well (the patrons there were nice enough to leave out a kettle), giving the semi-tepid stuff a cautious sniff before sipping at it. Bitter, strong, almost caustic... but it was well enough, so he plunked himself down in a chair (equally distant from EVERYONE), and shrugged.

"... So then, what horrors will we be dealing with on this particularly unfortunate day?"

That was a good question, thought Shae, silently mulling over the conversation (or lack thereof) between the other three as she, too, sipped her mug and pondered.

They were now in charge of paying off a rather hefty 'debt' to their so-called leader, which meant that the best thing to do with their time was... well, finding a job that payed good money. But where, and doing what? Yossarian and Kanda were capable of handling more dangerous things, sure, but she and Aster were...

Well, Shae couldn't actually speak for Aster, but she knew that her limits were drawn at chess games and non-violent odd jobs. Maybe she could tag along on a more difficult mission... but again, doing WHAT?

She would have comented on a drinking contest, moreso with her tolerance for alcohol vs. more of the same she'd matched immunity against a couple of days previously... but the result of drunk and angry men who were twice her size (and could smother her with body mass) wasn't exactly something she was going to appeal to ever again.

Even if she -had- won.

In a particularly mannerless way (as it was a community paper), Aster did a quick check of the back of th page she'd been reading, before carefully ripping out the article (or moreso the pictures were her aim) and folding it up.

As much as she'd hate to deny her -lovely- companions a prison break to look at, she'd rather keep that particularly scarring information to herself. Especially not with Yoss's particularly.. 'positive' attitude.

Too bad she hadn't exactly distanced herself from Kanda...

It was moreso his Koshka-curiousity than his actual desire to know that had locked on to whatever it was that their 'leader' was attempting to hide.

Which he of course indulged himself in, lifting the paper from the table (with an almost horrified sounding squeak from the table's single inhabitant) and unfolding it to give it a glance over.

.....

A glance over that soon took a look of being rather miffed as he dropped the paper back on the table and took back his own seat complete with a new cup of tea and his egg-and-toast disaster of a breakfast. However, beyond what he'd taken a glance at, it was really none of his business.

Not to say he didn't wonder what such a fragile, at least physically, girl would want with it.

The paper didn't even seem to touch the table before she scooped it up and had it shoved into the inner pocket of her jacket. Her only real luck had been Kanda hadn't said anything about it.

"Ah, well..... I..." she started talking as quickly as she could, even if it was with filler-words for a few moments, "I haven't really thought that far yet...." she admitted.
PostPosted: Mon Jul 21, 2008 8:10 pm

While Yossarian saw what Kanda was doing (from the corner of his eye, as he stared off elsewhere and nonchalantly sipped his coffee), the darker male made no effort to search out whatever curiosity had just been unfolded, merely shrugging it off as a useless scrap of personal interest to Aster that didn't involve him, and thus, didn't need to researched.

... The woman's final statement, of course, most definitely did involve him-- and was acted upon accordingly.

"You haven't thought that far yet?" he echoed, practically dripping with cynicism and disgruntlement (which wasn't unusual). "Considering the fact that our monetary issues are due to your broken establishment, I would advise you to be more attentive on the matter, woman."

It was sadly true; The Glass Highway did happen to be the cause for their debt... and even Shae (though she wouldn't speak up about it) was eager to work on earning the funds needed as quickly as possible.

Speaking of the latter girl, she, too, had taken up a spare page of the local newspaper (after Del fluttered over and picked it up for her), scanning over the text for any vaguely interesting article that might give them a hint of the day's events.

There were a few ads for odd-jobs that caught her eye-- one for some housework, another for baby-sitting... though such petty labor would no doubt be rejected amongst the other three, so she continued reading.

There were also a few old 'Wanted' and 'Warning' notes for criminals in the area, but... well, damn, that was too dangerous! Wasn't there some friendly median between the two with a nice, fat reward to be had?...

Oh! Wait, now there was something!

"... A-A reasonable reward... is being offered for the live capture of a local thief," she noted out loud, the closest to a suggestion she'd offer. "... Wanted for breaking and entering several shops in the area, as well as looting merchandise..."

"Tch, playing bounty hunter, are we?" Yossarian couldn't help but scoff at that. What a horribly dishonorable idea!

... Still, money was money, and any money earned was one step closer to being free of debt, right?...

"I'd like to see you plan out every day of your life before you know what it'll throw at you!" she retorted, rather cleverly considering she was the lesser educated of the pair, before she focused her attention onto her coffee.

Which she continued to sip at as Shae read from the paper which had been so sneakily nabbed from her table. Thank god she'd already removed the article she'd wanted.

"Ultimately it's up to you guys.."

For any other situation Kanda would have kept his mouth shut. However, he'd had too many experiences with a lack of information coming back to gnaw on his limbs and try and turn him into a nest for their young to do so on the note of work.

"It'd be worth more to us to hunt down the escaped convict that -she- just stashed away." Sip.

While he hadn't been meaning to point any fingers at their 'boss' with the statement, he had felt entitled to let the other two know that there was another option, even if it was only something he and ...ugh.... -HIM- were able to handle (Oh the grammar!) without losing an arm or whatever else would end up happening.

And if anybody had been curious to how accurate that statement was, Aster stiffened upon his mention of it, before laughing awkwardly and giving herself a further distraction in her coffee.

Sip sip sip.

What convict in her pocket? Oh god, Kanda, why couldn't you just keep your mouth shut and not share that article with the room?
PostPosted: Mon Jul 21, 2008 9:15 pm

"Hunting down a... convict?" Shae echoed in a frail SQUEAK of a tone, secretly horrified by the thought of such a (SUICIDAL) mission.

"... That she stashed away?" Yossarian chimed in the moment after, more curious about the fact that Aster had been hoarding such a strange scrap of information than he was worried over the danger (though he'd never admit to any of it). Why was something like that important to the little she-devil? She obviously couldn't catch him, and had been strangely secretive about it...

But no, that wasn't for him to ponder, he told himself, shaking the thought away in favor of something more important. Like paying off their damned debt.

"If the wretched dog has a worthwhile bounty on his head, I'm... not against it," he conceded after a pause, sighing and sipping at his coffee. His honor would have to be put on the back burner, granted... but there was still some good in taking a criminal off the street, so he'd deal with it. "So long as it's worth our while..."

"..." Of course, secretly, Shae felt that no good could come of such a mission... but she kept that all to herself and just nodded meekly instead, yielding to the majority. "I'll cooperate with... any decision made."

... And pray we survive, her brain added with a mental wince.

If only Karma was so kind.

Now she was in the spotlight on this little scrap of paper she'd been hoping nobody else would have to see... especially not Yossarian. Not that she had anything to proove to him, but he was the only person who knew her full name.

A last name which glared at her when she produced the article she'd snatched away and unfolded it neatly onto the table.

'Keeko Georgelas'

Right underneath a picture, though a horrible quality of one. Nobody would be able to tell if the man in that picture was him in real life if he just smiled a little and slicked his hair back.

"I can't say much about the job, didn't read it.." she mumbled, not about to admit that she moreso -couldn't- read. At least, she'd lose a reading contest to a well-versed child of 7.

Thank god for her that Kanda took over explaining it based on the minimal amount he'd read.

"Escaped two days ago along with another man..." though you really couldn't tell what either man looked like with the grime and scowling faces... or rather face, the other man looked rather happy to get a mugshot, "but the 'authorities' would rather the more dangerous target, the other man, be left to their better trained abilities due to his genocidal manners. However they don't have the manpower to track both due to the severity of one of their cases so they're offering a reward for this man."

He tapped the mugshot above Keeko's name, pausing to give a better scan of the man's personal information. "Went in for the murder of his wife, suspected he'll go after one of his surviving children. The safety of people on this job would easily allow for one to ask for a higher price for his capture.... based on experience."

Seemed pretty straight forward to him.

It was that second to last statement which, due to her inability to read it, that got her really nervous, though.
PostPosted: Mon Jul 21, 2008 11:00 pm

'Keeko Georgelas'.

... Georgelas.

........ Oh, god DAMMIT.

Yossarian regretted giving in to the urge of looking over, too sharp eyed and secretly suspicious to miss the bold print of thoe two crucial little words... or rather, one crucial little word-- the surname, so disgustingly familiar that it tore the bottom right out of his stomach in a blink.

It all made perfect sense. The particular interest. The hiding. The oddly tense way she was holding herself as Kanda read the description out loud and--

"... suspected he'll go after one of his surviving children."

Children? Well, s**t.

It was amazing that he managed to keep a vaguely calm expression while his thoughts raced, only allowing the faintest and most neutral of frowns as he cleared his throat to speak.

"Well, if we're going to go about this inevitable disaster," he growled, downing the last of his tepid coffee and setting the cup aside. "Let's not waste our time here any longer. We'll hunt the mongrel down and sell him off to the local authorities, simple as that."

"..." Maybe it was simple to him, but the thought of such a dangerous task was still nothing short of HORRIFYING to poor Shae, who could only resign herself to follow along and finish her tea in silence. Thankfully she could blame her trembling hands on sleep deprivation, but still...

Still, this couldn't end well. It just couldn't, and she knew it.

"S-So.. ah, how should we go about looking for this person, then?" she volunteered at last, very, very quietly. "We don't have much to go on, so... would it be wisest to scour the city for leads and additional information first, perhaps?..."

It was probably just as amazing that Aster didn't completely freak out, carefully picking up the piece of paper and offering it to Kanda with a weak smile, which could have easily been mistaken for anxiety over this particular task, before sighing to think.

"Mmmm... There might be some older folks at a clinic across town who would know something about his particular case. The Local clinic wasn't open until a couple of years ago, so I'd imagine that if his wife didn't give birth at home, it would have been at the other one."

It was probably the most composed she'd ever sounded, forcing out very personal information as well as she could without sounding as though she had any personal connection to it. A task that came with twitching arms.

Then a swallow. "I'd say two of us should find out about the children, because if they are the targets he'll go looking for them first..."

Mentally she was thanking god she hadn't seen her sister in years, meaning she'd probably stayed out of Erasmus...

"The other two should scope for information on places he may have lived, familiar areas."

The fact that a semi -useful- plan of action came out of Asteria's mouth was a little less than a surprise, earning a rather impressed eyebrow lift as she spoke, narrowing down the geographical area in a way only someone who had lived in the area (which he hadn't) could have done.

Another clinic?

"If the children were born in the other clinic, they'd likely have kept going there as they grew up because of familiarity." he added to her logic, folding his arms as she suggested the break-up.

Which either meant he was stuck with a grouchy male, the terroristic female, or .. well, Shae wasn't bad, but he didn't want to subject her to further stigma due to Yoss....

"Logically, if we break up, we need to keep one of us swordsman in each group for safety." he added, tucking the newspaper into a pocket. He could see why they'd need the picture..

But wouldn't whoever Asteria go with need one too?

Aster bit her lower lip, folding her arms so that she held onto one elbow and covered her mouth with a hand.

"... I'm familiar with the area, so it'd be easier for me to find areas that would be pointed out in a 'hangout' search...." she said, hinting at the 'alignment' she would have preferred.
PostPosted: Mon Jul 21, 2008 11:40 pm

Huh, wow. She was actually handling it like a composed adult.

... In fact, Asteria was acting far more composed that usual, suspiciously so, and it didn't take Yossarian long to recognize the pathetic farce for what it was. Still... he remained silent on the matter, passing it off with a gruff sigh and standing, arms crossed and expression tight with brooding thoughtfulness.

"Splitting off in pairs is well enough," he mumbled at last-- which was surprising to Shae, who fully expected the male (who usually made a point of boasting independence) to demand handling his part of the mission alone. And, even MORE surprisingly...

"Fine then, let's hurry up," he added and, without further ado, strode toward the door, resting one hand on the hilt of his sword and looking over his shoulder expectantly. "I expect you not to lag behind me, woman."

Had he just... volunteered to take her along? Willingly?

...Which left Shae defaulting to Kanda, a partner she had absolutely NO issues with, thankfully. In fact, the latter female was perfectly content to fall in line behind him. At least her partner was relatively peaceable when unprovoked, right?...

And his presence (she hoped) would lessen the chance of dying just a smidgeon...

"So... ah... What now, Sir?" she asked meekly, for lack of anything better, replacing Del on her shoulder to sit quietly (... if it behaved).

Aster seemed equally as surprised at Yoss's willingness to take her along. "A-ah! Give me a second.." she sputtered, grabbing a pencil from behind the Patron's little stand, before finding a blank-space in the newspaper that had become her little mass of mutilation and drawing a quick map on it.

"Sorry if it doesn't help you find the clinic!" she bid to Kanda and Shae as a farewell, figuring it'd be best if they didn't get lost, before leaving them to follow along behind Yoss.

This defaulted her only real 'lagging behind' to a deep sigh she allowed herself in the safety of the Inn, the last 'safe' moment of the day (not to say she didn't trust Yoss, but her wounds went a little bit deeper than he'd probably imagine), before she stepped outside to follow after him.

But of course she had to make sure she didn't give him any information she wasn't sure he knew already.

"Where to first?"

He looked at the map, which was actually well drawn considering how quickly it'd been scribbled down, giving it a look over to see if he could actually READ the damn thing.

Which he could... in a way.

He handed it off to Shae following his own scrutiny. "Can you read that at all?" he asked, only having been able to really tell names of buildings ('Dr. Hasslehoff's Family Clinic' seemed to be the key here) and a general area of 'that way' pointing what had been east according to her little compass in the corner.

"If so, we can start moving." he continued, sounding rather impatient in a way, but overall seeming pleased by the idea of getting something -done-. Though he secretly thought that Yoss had picked the 'better' deal of the two jobs to spite him.
PostPosted: Tue Jul 22, 2008 3:21 pm

The last 'safe' moment of the day? Ha! Yossarian wasn't about to let that pessimistic thought hold true; as far as he was concerned, he'd make the whole damn day safe and free of issues, even if it meant skewering danger through the gut like a screaming shish-kabob of JUSTICE SERVED and burying it in a grave with his blade.

Besides, the fact that he was toting around one of the so-called surviving children their 'target' wanted to hunt down was enough (emotional) complication already. He didn't need some hairy mess of violence on top of that, too!

"We're going to locate the facility of previous housing," he informed Aster, short and... well, not sweet, but curt. "Mongrels can only drag themselves so far in a short period of time."

Still... even if it did make logical sense, a part of him was screaming to go the other way as they wandered through the tangled streets and sparse morning crowds. He just... something about this little escapade was already starting to leave a bad taste in his mouth.

If only he knew WHY.

"..." Sadly, Shae's powers of deductive reasoning could only go so far with a drunken scribble like the one she'd just been handed... but a vague knowledge of the area in question did allow her to pick out a landmark here and there and, after a full minute or so of study, she glanced back up at him with a meek nod.

"I... think I know the way, vaguely," she sighed, handing the little slip back and standing. "It's... not in a very hospitable part of the city, though..."

Which was the understatement of the century, considering that, if her calculation were correct (and they were), they'd be journeying to one of the seediest, most broken down and crime laden parts of Erasmus.

Well, at least she was in the company of a capable swordsman?

... Who had a talent for defeat by trash can.

This couldn't possibly end well.

Had Yoss not already known the situation the -groan- that accompanied his answer would have still been as incriminating as it already was. If it wasn't already obvious how much she -really- didn't want to go outside into dangerous territory.

"A-alright.." she stuttered, not really 'out loud' but 'out quiet', following along behind him, at a distance that probably would have allowed her to scale his left arm if she needed to. The sinking feeling in her gut didn't help her at all. It was like if you were watching a horror film and the heroine was alone but you knew the villain was in there with her and she didn't know where he was...

Times five, since she didn't know where he was... and that was the feeling that really got to her. It made her twitch, that special little 'I'm refraining from doing something' twitch of hers, whenever any of the other men in the street moved suddenly.

Aster couldn't help it.

But at least she kept her wits about herself well enough. "Well, ......" she paused and seemed to start several times. Damn. What could she suggest that wouldn't be incriminating. "I'm trying to think of who would know that information.."

Um... YOU?

Well -that- saved them some problems in locating the damn place. Damn girl needed a crash-course in drawing maps. Not that he was any better at it, but that was moot point.

However, that last thought from Shae didn't seem to bother him much. Even without admitting his own little.... episode with the trashcans the day previous, as long as nobody was -weilding- them against him, he'd be fine.

Well, even if they did, frankly. Mugen vs Trashcan = Obvious outcome.

"Not a problem. We should start moving to get some ground covered.." 'Less that frilly swordsman come back and start shrieking his flowery words that we weren't doing anything', though he didn't say that out loud.

As he spoke Kanda replaced Mugen to that familiar place at his side, glad to have that familiar comfort back (it was like a baby blanket to him..), before he gave Shae this very.. calm 'Are you ready to go?' look.
