Serenity knew she had taken a long time coming back to visit her friend at the school where he lived in the Seconds world, but in her defense a lot had been going on and it had been practically impossible to get away from home for more than an hour or so at a time, and even then it was usually on wedding business.
Then of course she had found Ian, and even more of her time had been taken up, nursing the poor boy back to health. Now, however, she had made sure to take the time to go back and visit her friend - but she wasn't alone.
Ian had improved greatly since Serenity had adopted him, but he still had trouble being active for long periods of time and now, while he and Serenity were heading towards the school where his mother's friend lived, he was being carried in her arms, similar to the way a woman would carry a newborn child. He felt no embarrassment at this - it was comfortable and it meant he didn't have to walk.
He was even still wearing his nightdress (dress meaning clothes, not the 'dress' like girls wore, he insisted) and sleeping cap - just on the off chance that he might be able to get a nap in on the way there or back.

At the time, Kanki was climbing on a tree just outside the schools botanic garden. He was hidden from everyones view by many layers of leaves and twigs.
After a few last efforts of climbing up the tree, he found himself at the top. "What a view!" he sighed and looked around eagerly. He then looked down and saw someone moving. Who was it?
"Hello?" he hollered down to the person he had noticed.

Serenity blinked and looked around, hearing the voice. She recognized it, she knew it was her friend - but where was he?
Ian was also looking around curiously. "Where is he, Mom?" he asked. "I don't see anyone anywhere ..."
Serenity cocked her head thoughtfully and looked around. "I'm not sure," she admitted sheepishly. "I don't ... see him ..."
Suddenly a leaf floated past her face, and she looked up instinctively and broke into a wide smile. She recognized those clothes, even if she couldn't see her friend's face.
"There he is!" she exclaimed to Ian, pointing up into the tree. "Hello Kanki!" she called up to him. "I've come back for a visit!"

Kankis eyes grew wide as he heard Serenity call back to him.
"Serenity? You here?" he asked and started to climb back down to meet his friend.
"I'm coming down, wait a moment please," he added just to make sure she wouldn't leave while he was climbing between branches.

Serenity giggled and held Ian so that he could also look up into the trees.
"I'll be waiting for you!" she called up to Kanki brightly. "I'm not going anywhere!"
Besides wanting to visit him again, she also wanted to introduce Ian to her friend.

Kanki only had to slide down a few more branches before he could jump down to the ground.
"Hi!" he said as he landed on the soft green grass. He smiled brightly at Serenity. "How have you been?" he asked without noticing the little sleepy guy in her arms.

Serenity giggled again and smiled brightly at her friend. "I'm doing well," she replied happily. "And I can see you're having a fun time here!"
She shifted Ian in her arms so that she was holding him about at Kanki's height.
"I'd like you to meet my son," she said brightly. "Ian. I found him last week and took him in."
Ian, for once mostly awake, smiled at Kanki with the same happy cheer as his mother. "Hi, Kanki!" he said brightly. "Mom's told me all about you! She says you're really good at drawing and you're really nice and a lot of fun and you have good music!"

"Yes I'm having a lot of..." Kanki begun to say but then heard that Serenity had a child. His eyes grew wide. He looked at Ian.
"Hello..." he said and inspected the little guy. Kanki was so surprised by the little second that he lost his ability to talk for a while.

Serenity wondered for a moment why Kanki had suddenly gone silent, but then she noticed that he was staring at Ian. She hoped Kanki hadn't somehow been offended ... but maybe he had just been surprised.
She hoped that's all it was.
Ian fidgeted and looked back at Kanki, feeling a little awkward. It was obvious that his presence had surprised his mom's friend ... well, they had known that it would be ... but he had hoped that Kanki wouldn't mind.
He blinked up at Serenity, red tingeing his cheeks as he looked up at her. "Did I do something bad?" he whispered as though afraid he was going to get into trouble.

"I'm sorry for staring..." Kanki apologized. "It's just that I didnt expect anything like this to happen." he added with a nervous giggle.
"Anyway, it's nice to meet you Ian. Your mom was really lucky to have found you." Kanki then said with a smile and held his hand out to Ian to greet him.

Relief washed over Ian's features, and he leaned forward over Serenity's arms to take Kanki's big hand and shake it.
"I think I was the lucky one," he told Kanki seriously. "I almost starved to death! But Mom found me and gave me food and now I'm almost better again. She says soon I'll be back to normal! Whatever that means."
He grinned, his pale skin flushing slightly from the excitement.
Serenity laughed. "Well I hope you two get along," she said brightly. "Kanki, are you still staying at the school? I have something for your room, if you'd like ..."

"Oh my. You really were lucky then," Kanki gasped as he heard what had happened to Ian.
He then turned to Serenity.
"Yes. I'm still living there." he answered. "You have something for my room?" he asked childishly. He was getting all giggly.

Serenity blushed slightly, but she nodded and set Ian on the ground, then reached for her bag.
"I hope you don't mind," she said softly, slightly embarrassed, "but ... I painted a picture ... of you and me and your mom and Ian ... all four of us, even though you've never met Ian before and Ian still hasn't met your mom ... and ... well ... I thought it would be nice ..."
She took the canvas out of her bag and held it up. Serenity and Tea were in the back, standing shoulder to shoulder, Ian was sitting on Serenity's shoulder, and Kanki was standing in front of them, two fingers held up in a V and grinning impishly.

Kankis jaw dropped wide open with surprise. "That's a cool painting!" he praised Serenity. "I bet mom will love it when she sees it." he added confidently. Kanki looked over the painting one more time and then noticed how similar his and Ians moms were. "You and my mom could be twins..." he commented silently.
