I didn't see a discussion for this anywhere, and I was wondering what people thought about this choice. The movie doesn't come out until 2010, and the only chosen role in the entire movie is that Robert Downey Jr. plays Sherlock.
Robert Downey Jr New Sherlock Holmes movie
If you don't think Robert's suited, who out there is better? ALSO: since there isn't descisions on who to be Watson, what current actor would you pick for the role?

Eirwyn posted discussion for this under the title "Exciting or Alarming News."
I personally am appalled by the choice. >>;

I hear Robert Downey Jr., I think "SOAPDISH."
Soapdish + Sherlock Holmes?
WHUT?
Yeah. But that's just in my mind.
Not that I could pick a better actor for the role. I'd just shove some of my favorites in. Christian Bale. Ralph Fiennes.
Not that they'd be good or bad choices. I'm just shallow at times.

I desperately want to see Alan Rickman as Holmes. He would be brilliant.

Alan Rickman would be fabulous as Holmes. He's a wonderful actor, and I really think he is capable of portraying anyone.
As for Watson, I believe that Will Ferrell has been selected for the upcoming Sherlock Holmes 'comedy'.

I find the fact that they are making a SH 'comedy' offensive in the extreme. And I find Ferrell even worse. Seriously, whose rubbish idea was that? gonk

Actually, I found much of the Peter Cooke & Dudley Moore "Hound" to be hilarious. A good parody of ANYTHING is done with love, not derision, though.

True, but Ferrell invariably plays the idiot, and irreverently. Things like Smarter Brother are well done, and I find them enjoyable. But with modern trends in comedy going the way they are... I'm afraid this is going to be full of bodily function jokes and bad innuendo, perhaps mixed with a dash of Stooge-style slapstick. And it most certainly won't have the flavour of British humour, as I would prefer it did.

I agree. But I doubt the people making that movie DO love the stories, they just see them as ripe for trite, sterotypical and stupid jokes.

Precisely my objection. But of course I will go see it, if only to horrify myself...
