This is the start of my Mars fanfic. It Starts a few months after the Mars manga ended. Enjoy smile

When Rei first saw her, he truly could not believe his eyes. She was a beautiful little girl, no more then two or three. She looked at him as she walked by and smiled. Her hair was golden with little curls cascading down her back. Her eyes were a pale shade of blue. He stared at her in awe.

Tatsuya, his best friend, shot him an odd look. They were standing outside of a local sporting goods store, where Rei was doing a promotional stint. The usual, signing autographs for screaming teenage girls. Ever since he won the 500 Grande Prix and got his picture on the cover of that racing magazine, he’s become a slight teen idol. Well, at nearly twenty, his teen idol status was coming to a close and a new crop of young women began to flock too. Usually Rei ate this stuff up with a spoon, slightly flirting but never too much. He was a married man after all. But the current look on Rei’s face wasn’t staring appreciatively at a woman. It was staring mostly shocked at a little girl.

“Dude, are you alright?” Tatsuya said. He tried to get a good look at the little girl, but she disappeared into the crowded street.

“That little girl…” Rei whispered. He ran his hands through his long blond hair, still looking down the street. “That little girl looked exactly like me.” He finally ripped his gaze away and looked directly at Tatsuya. Tatsuya, while trying to keep his cool, couldn’t hide the look on his face. Was he serious? He didn’t have time to ask though. Rei looked back towards the left and then took off. Plowing through some stunned young ladies in the process.

“Rei? Where are you going?!” Tatsuya screamed, but it was too late. Rei was too far out of earshot.

………………………………...............................................................................................................................................................

Where is she? Rei thought to himself, looking in every direction. Maybe she took a cab, or turned a corner. In any event, she’s not around. Damnit! That little girl… It was too much of a coincidence. She looked just like Sei and he did at that age. And if she is what he thought she was, it was going to cause a lot of trouble. He stopped running and stared a head of him. He closed his eyes and sighed. He needed to think. He opened his eyes and saw the park right in front of him. He saw swing sets. He saw children. He saw her. She was running around, smiling and laughing. He was entranced. Before he realized it, he has walked over to a bench and sat down.

He didn’t see the woman sitting next to him, but she looked directly at him. He missed the shocked look on her face, the recognition, the fear, and the immense relief.

“Hello Rei Kashino,” she said. Her voice was quiet and sad. His gaze broke from the little girl to the woman. For a moment he couldn’t believe his eyes. He knew this woman. He knew her very well.

“Megumi? Megumi Narita?” He hasn’t seen her in years. Not since the center. His eyes widen in shock. He looks at the little girl playing again. She’s running all over the place, energy unending. She climbs the jungle gym with ease and begins swinging like it’s nothing to her, like it’s natural.

“She’s beautiful, isn’t she Rei? I don’t know where she gets all that energy.” She also stares at the little girl. A serene smile crosses her face. Rei’s expression hardens. This can‘t be happening. He needed answers, and he needed them now.

“Is she mine Megumi?” She bows her head slightly and closes her eyes. She’s quiet for a few moments. Then she raises her head with more strength then she looks like she has. For the first time Rei really looks at her. He hasn’t seen her in over three years. He could see the beautiful girl she used to be in this ghost of a woman. Her hair was still long and flaxen and shiny, but her skin was quite pale. Her frame is extremely thin and the dark circles under her eyes indicated someone of very poor health. But the look in her eyes was full of love, and regret.

“When you left the center, I thought I’d never see you again. You had all this life brewing inside of you. Life you didn’t even know existed. I knew you’d do whatever you wanted because that’s how you are Rei. What I didn’t know is when you left the center, you left some life inside of me too.” She turns to him, her tired eyes clear and direct. “When I realized I was pregnant I tried to hide it as long as I could, but it’s not something that keeps itself hidden. When the administrators found out they called my parents. My mother came to get me. I was 16 years old and didn’t know what to do, and I was so scared. She tried to get me to give her up. My father had already left for America, so it was just the two of us. When Rei was born, my mother knew I couldn’t let her go. Before she died, she made sure I had enough money to raise her comfortably.”

“Her name is Rei? You named her after me? Why?”

Megumi sighed again, and turned her head back to her daughter. “The minute I saw her, I knew it was right. She came out screaming her head off. She drove the nurses and her mother crazy. I knew from that moment she was just like her father. The name seemed appropriate.”

“Why didn’t you tell me? Why? I could’ve done something for you!” He nearly shouted at her, making the other parents turn their heads. They started to whisper amongst themselves. Rei lowered his voice some. “I had the right to know… I had the right Megumi.”

“You did have the right Rei. And for that I am truly sorry. But let me ask you a question. What would you have done if you had known? Had your father pay me off to keep me quiet? Would you have stepped up and been a father? You were so young, and so was I. You were so wild and free. I couldn’t bring myself to tie you down. I never told anyone who her father was, no matter how much they asked.” They stare at each other. “You are the first person I ever told.”

Rei takes a minute to take all this in. He has a daughter. She’s at least three years old. She’s beautiful and active. And she was conceived at the Psychiatric Center. He puts his head between his hands and rubs his temples. How the hell was he going to tell Kira? Oh god, Kira!

“I’m dying, Rei.” For a second he stops breathing. He’s frozen. Megumi can tell he shocked, but continues. “I’m in Tokyo again because I was going to tell you. I don’t have long, less then a month now. I can’t leave her with my father, Rei. I can’t let him do to her what he did to me. I can’t let her be raised in his house, with his wife and his kids. She’ll end up like me. When I go, I need you too take her. I know you’ll care for her. I know you’ll protect her, like you protected me.” Her voice trails off. Her daughter runs towards her, dirty from the sand, smile that reaches her eyes.

“Mommy! Mommy! Did you see me climb? I’m the bestest climber ever!” The little girl flings herself at her mother, who is weak but takes the brunt force in stride. As she clings to her mother, her head turns towards Rei. Her smile brightens even more. She lets her mother go and jumps towards him. “Wow, you’re Rei Kashino! I saw you on TV. You won that race! Mommy says I was named after you! My name’s Rei too!” He dirty hands are on his jeans and her eyes are staring directly into his, with too much intensity for a child. Rei touches the little girl’s face and wipes off some dirt. She grins widely. Rei smiles too and stands up, picking the little girl up with him and raising her above his head. She laughs loudly. He then cuddles her to his chest, and amazingly she hugs him back. Megumi’s eyes fill with tears.

“Give me your number so I can call you. We need to talk this out in detail. But first I need to talk to my wife.” He turns to her and watches her dig through her purse for a pen. She scribbles something on a piece of paper and hands it too him as he puts the child down. It’s a picture of Rei, in a pink sun dress and straw hat. On the back is her name, Rei Narita-Kashino. Born July 7th. And her telephone number.

“I put your name on her birth certificate, in secret. My mother didn’t even know.” The child jumps on the bench, wiping her hands on her jeans.

“I’ll be in touch soon.” He nods to her and smiles at Rei. “You be good to your mommy, kiddo.”

“I will Mr. Kashino! I promise!” She calls and waves as he leaves. He waves back and begins to walk back to the Sporting Goods store. His bike is there. He needs to get home and talk to Kira. He needs to try and explain what just happened. He also has to explain that she’s about to be a mother. His only hope is that she can handle it. And forgive him.

Second Part - enjoy (this is going to be very long, I can already see it)

Kira is making dinner. It’s been so long since they had a real meal. Today was the last day of classes, so she got out early. Rei is at the promotional thing, so she had time to start cooking. The main course is almost finished, so she’s working on the rice and vegetables. She checks the clock on the wall. He should be home any minute. As she begins stirring the vegetables she hears the familiar sound of a Ducati parking in front of their apartment. She smiles and wipes her hands on her apron. She turns to meet him at the door with a smile, but as he walks in she knows something’s wrong. Something’s very wrong.

“What happened?” She says. Her concern is etched across her face. He takes off his jacket and hangs it on the coat rack.

“We need to talk,” he says not looking at her. They stand perfectly still. Kira can smell the vegetables burning and turns to stir them. He rushs to her and grabs her arm.

“But the vegetables…”

“Let them burn.” He says.

“I have to turn the stove off. We don’t want the house to burn down.” He lets her go and sits down on the sofa. A few seconds later she joins him. “Is it your father? Or your Honda contract?”

“No. It’s much more important then those things.” He pauses for a minute, lost in thought. Kira searches his face, but can read nothing. He meets her gaze, then hands her the picture. Kira stares at it, and her eyes widen. Her hands start to shake.
“She’s mine, Kira. I just found out about her today, I swear to you!” Kira stays silent. Slowly she turns the photo over.

“She has your name.”

Rei almost winces. He can hear the pain in her voice. He feels like crying, but can’t. “I’m so sorry Kira. She was before I even met you. I didn’t know…”

“Are there more?” Kira asks, completely without emotion. “Are there anymore Rei? Do you know how many children you could possibly have?” This time Rei does wince. A tear rolls down Kira’s cheek. He turns from her.

“There can’t possibly be anymore. Every time I was with someone I was always protected. Every time, but once. I swear Kira… I swear to god…” This time he does start to cry. He’s hurting her. He’s hurting himself. They sit in silence. Finally Kira speaks.

“How did this happen Rei? When? Who? I need to know.”

He sucks in a breath, then exhales slightly. “You know I was in the Psychiatric Center after Sei died. I was working through my problems with Dr. (name) when she came in. Her father and mother brought her there. They were arguing constantly about her, blaming each other for their daughter’s insanity. She had slit her wrists. The bandages were so tight, I remember that. She was beautiful, but pathetic. She just stood there, letting them fight, never saying a word. Finally the nurses took her to her room, even though everyone could hear her parents fighting down the hall.”

“She never interacted with anyone. I always saw her with a book in her hands outside under a tree. I remember feeling sorry for her. And then I got so angry with her. She tried to kill herself, just like Sei did. Different method, but same result. I just got so pissed. And one day I just snapped. I called her out. I told her how pathetic she actually was, how stupid she was. And she just stared at me. And then she smiled. She smiled and called me an a*****e. And then she walked away. She had a mouth on her that’s for sure.”

“After that, we ended up in the same anger management group. I was surprised, she seemed so quiet all the time. But as I listened to her, I found out she had all this rage building and building just like I did. She slit her wrists as a sign of protest against her parents. Apparently her father had an affair with his secretary and got her pregnant. Her parents were divorcing and used her as their tool to hurt each other. Afterwards, I started to talk to her. I apologized and she blew me off. And that pissed me off even more. One day I was really going to let her have it when I saw her father talking to her. Berating her, like she was a dog. I flipped out. I nearly punched him, but she grabbed me and pulled me away.”

“I don’t know what it was, but after that we were just together a lot. She just talked to me, flirted with me, came on to me. When we went to bed together neither of us expected anything from it. We weren’t friends or dating. We just hooked up. Soon after that I left the center and never gave it another thought. I never even thought about her until this afternoon, when I saw that little girl. God I’m so stupid!”

Rei hung his head. He couldn’t even look at Kira. He couldn’t see the sadness in her eyes.
“She must have been so lonely.” Rei looked at her then, the sadness evident, but some understanding was there too. He prayed there was hope. “I can understand how she felt, I felt that way myself for a long time. Until I met you. I fell in love with you, and I’ll be with you forever. She was alone. Alone with a baby. She must have been so frightened.”

“There’s more Kira. She’s dying.” The sadness turned into shock. Her hand flew to her mouth. “I don’t know the details yet. That’s why I got her number. It seems she wants me to take Rei after she goes. She doesn’t want that kid anywhere near her father.” He got on his knees in front of her. He stared into her eyes for a long time.

“Tell me what you want Kira. I’ll do whatever you want me too. Just please don’t give up on me.” Kira slowly smiled a little. He could tell how hard it was for her to do that, but she was trying to be strong. For herself. For him. She took a deep breath.

“We should go to her together. I’ll need to know what Rei likes to eat, what her favorite colors are, what her schedule is. If she’s going to be living here, there are certain things I need too…” She stops short as Rei wraps his arms around her and pulls her in tight. Kira starts to cry as she feels his tears on her neck. She holds him even tighter.

“I love you Kira.”
………………………………...............................................................................................................................................................

Rei and Kira stand outside a luxury apartment. Neither wants to move. Their nerves are completely shot. After Rei called Megumi that night 3 days ago, neither have been able to sleep or eat. It’s been stressful and painful. But they both know it’s something that needs to be done, otherwise they wouldn’t be standing in front of the building, waiting to see a little girl that was about to change their life together.

Kira sighs loudly. “We should go in… she’s expecting us.” Rei can only nod. Taking Kira by the hand, they walk through the main doors. Rei walks to the desk and gives his name. Soon they’re lead to an elevator, where they’re told to go all the way to the top. To the penthouse. Where they are expected. They are silent in the elevator. Kira keeps taking quick glances at Rei, trying to read him. What’s going on in his head? What can he be feeling?

She knew what she was feeling. Nervous. Scared. And somewhere deep inside, a slight resentment. This woman gave birth to Rei’s child. They hadn’t even discussed children of their own. Yet this woman had a part of Rei with her for three years. She was jealous. Immediately after the jealousy came the pity. Not for herself, but for the child. It wasn’t her fault she had been born like this. Kira had thought long and hard about that little girl. Part of her wanted to hate her, but she couldn’t. This child was going to need her soon. She had to be strong enough to be strong for her. Little Rei, a child she hadn’t even met yet.

The elevator doors opened to reveal a huge living area. It was spotless and sterile. Rei let out a small whistle. “Looks like my dad’s place doesn’t it?” Kira could only nod. This was a place of money. It made their little one bedroom apartment look like a shack. Kira’s attention was soon diverted to the sound of small, fast feet heading her way. Around a corner came the most beautiful child Kira had ever seen. Blond, blue-eyed, and the spitting image of her husband. But it was the child’s smile that melted her heart. She smiled like her father, her left eyebrow raised ever so slightly. After the child came an older gentleman with a stern expression.
“Mr. Kashino! You came! Mommy said you were!” the child squealed and threw herself at Rei. He managed to grab her and hold her to his chest. He looked directly at Kira. The worry on his face made her think he was going to be sick. The little girl’s focus moved from the man holding her to Kira. Her smile widened. “Are you Mrs. Kashino? Mommy said you’d come too!” She struggled out of Rei’s grip and pulled Kira towards the corner from which she came. “Come on you guys, mommy wants to see you!”

Kira, shocked by the child’s strong grip could only follow, with Rei not far behind her. The child lead them down a hallway, where a door was ajar at the end. The smell of medicine hit almost at once. Rei fought the urge to be sick. This was the same smell that lingered in his mother’s room all those years ago. Megumi must be terribly ill, he thought to himself. Little Rei opened the door to her mother’s room and pulled Kira in with her. Inside, a beautiful, sickly woman was propped up on pillows. An oxygen tank next to her made a wheezing noise as she inhaled. Kira met her eyes. They seemed awfully tired. But the woman smiled at her. It was a strong smile. All Kira’s resentment died. This woman was dying, and sees Kira as her saving grace. Kira was humbled.

The little girl jumped onto her mother’s bed. “Mommy look! They came just like you said they would!”

“Of course they did, sweetheart.” The woman said, smiling lovingly at her daughter. Her eyes returned to Kira’s face. “Please sit down, both of you.” She gestured to the chairs close to the bed. Rei, grabbing Kira’s hand for support, walked to a chair and sat down. They sat silently for a moment.

“Thank you both for coming. I know how difficult this must be for you both. I must apologize for the state of this room, but lately most of my strength has left me.” She then began to cough. Rei jumped up to call for someone, but Megumi shook her head. After a minute the coughing subsided. “The medication causes it. My immune system is very weak and I’m highly susceptible to colds.” Kira glanced at the little girl. She seemed un-phased, like this was a normal occurrence. Her heart went out to that little girl.

“What’s happening to you?” Rei asked suddenly. He remained standing. Megumi shot a look at him, and then to her daughter. She smiled at the child. “Baby, why don’t you and Daisuke go and make some snacks for our guests?” She motions for the stern looking man to come in. Rei happily jumped off her mother’s bed and ran to the door. “I’ll get the juice and cookies!” She yelled behind her to no one in particular. Daisuke nodded as he closed the door behind him. Megumi leaned back into her pillows and closed her eyes.

“It’s getting harder to put up the front for her. I’m so tired.”

“What is happening to you Megumi? What’s wrong with you?” Rei said bluntly. Kira could tell this atmosphere was getting to him in the worst way. Megumi gave him a hard look.

“Still as rude as ever I see.” She sighed and sat up some. “As I told you a few days ago, I’m dying. I have Leukemia. I’m currently in the last stages. Satisfied?” Rei backed down slightly. It was obvious he came across harsher then intended. He quietly sat back down.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it like that.”

Megumi wilted a little. Kira didn’t think it was possible for this woman to get much weaker. She was obviously wrong.

“I know this must be hard for both of you. Trust me when I say I never expected it to be like this. Unfortunately I don’t have much of a choice.” She stared into Kira’s eyes then. Kira stared back. It was obvious Megumi was sizing her up. Weak as she was, those eyes still carried a lot of emotion. Kira almost wanted to cringe. “Do you have any children?” she asked suddenly.

“No, not yet” Kira responded. Megumi laughed lightly.

“You’d better prepare yourself then. She can be a handful. She’s constantly getting into some sort trouble, and she’s everywhere all the time.” Both women then looked at Rei. Feeling outnumbered, he sank into his chair. “She’s going to need a lot of attention, and a lot of love. She’s used to that.” She reached under the covers and pulled out a piece of paper. “I had my lawyer draw this up. It’s all the documents needed to make you both Rei’s legal guardians. I;m getting weaker by the day, so it won’t be long now. All I need you to do is sign them. Both of you.” She handed the paper to Rei.

He quickly read it over and handed it to Kira. Her eyes danced over the legal terms. There would be a trust set up for Rei. When she turned 18 she would come into a substantial amount of money. As her guardians they were responsible to handle the trust, as well as her care. There was more money set aside for her well being, for the two of them to use as they needed in order to maintain her. The words were cold, but the meaning was there. She wanted her daughter taken care of as best as humanly possible. Kira’s eyes filled with tears.

“Please sign it. It’s the best I can do for her now.”

Rei stared at Kira. Everything he did came down to her. After what seemed like an eternity, Kira reached for a pen and signed her name. She handed the papers over to Rei. The relief on his face was apparent. He signed without an issue. Megumi closed her eyes again. Her entire body seemed to relax. A minute later the door burst open. Little Rei jumped back on her mother’s bed and snuggled with Megumi. Daisuke followed holding a tray of cookies and some juice.

“Mommy look! I made the snack.” The child babbled. Megumi held her daughter tightly. In Kira’s mind a picture formed. It was sad and poignant. It reminded her of the still life she gave to Rei, the one that started their entire life. She realized then that this little girl was exactly like her father. She was only 3, but tragedy was about to hit her too. She could tell from Rei’s look that he was thinking the exact same thing himself.

“Mommy did you tell him yet? Did you tell him he’s my daddy?” Rei became still. Kira’s sudden exhale of breath made him jump. He stared at Megumi.

“She knows? How long…” the child left her mother’s embrace and crawled along the bed. She stopped in front of Rei, her head tilted. And then she smiled. “Mommy told me today you were my daddy. She said I was going to live with you when she goes to heaven. You are my daddy right?” A tear trailed down Rei’s cheek. Quickly he grabbed the child and held her close. The little girl squealed slightly.

“Yes kiddo. I’m your daddy. I’ve always been your daddy.” He rocks her slightly in his arms. Over his shoulder, little Rei looks at Kira and smiles. “And you’re my Kira right? I get to live with you too! I hope you like me!” Kira held her sobs inside. She nodded, unable to speak. This little girl is strong, she thought. Stronger then she thought possible.

“Daddy? Will mommy be ok in heaven?” Rei asked her father. She was sitting at the breakfast table of her new home, eating her breakfast. A month had passed since Rei and Kira became her legal guardians. In that month, Megumi passed as well. The funeral was small and bleak. Megumi’s father hadn’t even spared a word for his oldest daughter’s death, let alone a thought about his only grandchild. But Rei didn’t have time to think about those things. He was too busy trying to move his growing family into their new home. Due to Megumi’s generous gift, and a little extra from his father, Rei managed to purchase a large five bedroom home. Why Kira wanted such a large house was beyond him, but he gave in to whatever she wanted. She had made a huge sacrifice for him, so this was the least he could do for her.

His father had not been pleased with the development at first. Then he met little Rei, and fell head over heals for those curls and eyes. He had never seen the old man smile so much in his entire life. It was a relief. Rei stayed out of the racing scene until after things had gotten settled, which now they were. He was leaving the next day for a huge race in America. His only concern now was leaving Rei and Kira alone for the month he’d be gone. His stint in the states was important for his career and his future as a pro racer. But now he had a family to think about. And his family had just asked a question he wasn’t prepared to answer.

“Of course she will be sweetie; your mommy will be fine in heaven. I’m sure my dad is up there helping her right now,” Kira answered for him. Rei sighed silently with relief. She always managed to say the right things to calm both their nerves. Maybe the two of them will be fine after all. The little girl stared at Kira in awe.

“Your daddy’s in heaven too?” She asked Kira in a quiet voice.

“Yup, and I’m sure they’ll be fine together. Now finish your breakfast. Grandpa should be by to pick you up any minute.” With that, the little girl began eating frantically. She really liked her new grandpa. He gave her new toys and played with them too! They were going to have so much fun together.

Meanwhile, Kira was conflicted. In the month she’d been with Rei, she developed a strong bond with the little girl. Tonight would be the first night she’d been away from her, and she was surprised at her own reaction. She didn’t want to be away from her for a minute. But tonight was important. Her husband would be leaving for a month, and she had something really important to tell him. Tonight would be the only time she had, so she talked to her father-in-law, and he agreed to take Rei for the night. A few minutes later, the doorbell rang.

“Grandpa!” The little girl yelled, jumping off her chair and running to the door.

“Hey kiddo, be careful!” Rei yelled after her. He loved his daughter to death, and anytime she did something reckless he panicked. He respected his own father so much more now. My god, look what I put him through… this is payback isn’t it? He walked towards the door, where his daughter had launched herself into his father’s arms. The middle-aged man in his expensive Italian suit held the little girl so tightly she began to squeal. He didn’t care that her hands weren’t clean and were getting greasy marks all over him. His smile said it all. She was the most precious thing in his life. He looked at his son’s almost amazed expression and laughed. Rei had the decency to look away and blush slightly. He would never understand his old man.

Kira came into the living room holding an over night bag. Her father-in-law grabbed it from her, not letting go of the little girl.

“Ready to go?” He asked her. She nodded but began to squirm out of his arms. Obligingly he put her down. She ran over to her father, who knelt down to her height. The little girl had a very stern look on her face. Rei almost laughed out loud.

“You’d better be good in America, or you’ll be in big trouble daddy!” She pointed her finger at him and put her hand on her hip. This time Rei did laugh and snuggled her close. She put her head on his shoulder, her look not changing.

“I promise I’ll be good. But you have to be good for Kira and Grandpa too!” At this, the little girl nodded. When Rei let her go, she walked over to Kira, who picked her up and walked her to her grandfather.

“Grandpa will bring you home tomorrow before dinner, ok?” Rei just smiled at her.

“Ok Kira.” With that her grandfather scooped her out of Kira’s arms and walked out the door.

The house became quiet. Kira could feel Rei’s look behind her, but she didn’t turn. Her eyes had filled with tears. Quietly, Rei came up behind her and wrapped his arms around her.

“It’s only one night honey. She’ll be fine.” Kira nodded and wiped her eyes. She turned and wrapped herself in Rei’s warm embrace. She was going to miss that embrace.

“It’s not just her I’m going to miss.” Rei sighed into her hair. He knew all too well what she was talking about. But right now they were alone together in an empty house. And he was leaving for a month. He wanted to be with his wife as much as possible for the next 24 hours. He parted from her just enough to look into her eyes. He loved her so much he could burst. He kissed her cheek where the tears fell. He kissed her chin that had quivered. He kissed her lips that were so soft and warm. Kira fell into his embrace like putty. When he broke the kiss from her lips and started on her neck, he heard the words he had been hoping for…

“Let’s go upstairs.”

………………………………...............................................................................................................................................................

Lying in the afterglow with Rei was always nice. In his arms Kira felt the safest. They had made love all day, like it was the last time they’d ever be together. Kira knew this was absurd, but she had never been away from Rei as long as this before. She was frightened. So she clung to him as much as she could. Rei didn’t seem to mind.

“Hey, I’ve been thinking about something.” He said suddenly, looking down at Kira. She looked back at him, curiously. He smiled and continued. “Now that we’ve had Rei for a little while, I’d say we make pretty terrific parents, don’t you?” He waited for a response. Kira looked confused and slightly concerned.

“What are you getting at Rei?”

He laid his head back on the pillow and stared at the ceiling. “I just mean that we can do it. The whole ‘parenting’ thing. What if…” He stopped himself. He had to word this carefully, not to scare her. He thought to himself for a few seconds. “What if we tried for one of our own? You know, a brother or sister for Rei…” He waited tensely for her response. He glanced down at her. She was biting her lip. She stayed quiet for a long time. “Kira…”

“I’m pregnant, Rei.”

He sat up at once. So did she. They stared at each other. “Are you sure? Have you been checked?” Kira nodded, a smile spreading across her face. It was contagious, because he began to smile too. Then suddenly he let out a whoop. Then he realized something he hadn’t noticed before… something that made a whole lot of sense. “Is that why you wanted such a big house?”

“I didn’t know I was pregnant then. I’ve read now that I was probably ‘nesting’. It’s a term when a woman starts preparing herself and her surroundings for the birth.” She got quiet again for a second or two. “I’m about 3 months along. With school and everything that’s happened, I guess I just didn’t notice anything was going on inside of me. Until I noticed last week I hadn’t had a period for a while.” She looked directly at him, intensely. He seemed in shock, but there was still a smile on his face. “Are you really ok with this?”

He cupped her cheek with his hand. “I wouldn’t have mentioned it if I thought it was a bad idea. Now though, I guess we don’t have to practice the whole ’process of getting pregnant’ as much as I had hoped.” He smirked at her.

“You’re such a pervert sometimes, you know that?” However she did move closer to him and kissed from his chest to his neck. His breathing became slightly labored. He could feel her smile on his skin. “Of course you do realize we don’t want to be out of practice if we decide we want more, you know…” She said letting her voice trail off as she kissed from his neck to his lips. Slowly, he rolled on top of her and they spent the rest of the night blissfully forgetting their upcoming pain the morning would bring.
